Fixing the game of 9 ball.

I don't want to derail Glenn's amazing thread. If anyone is passionate enough about pool's classification as a sport, we can have another thread. I have to go, my buddy and I are going to see who can give themselves the most high-fives in a 60 second time period. It's competitive, physically exerting... you know, a sport!
I've heard hand cranking it can be considered a sport to, provided its done at a minimum strokes per second, otherwise is just considered playing around! I've also heard it can be played by oneself, or in some areas of the world, with others as well. Its best played when youth is on your side, as the older one is, the harder it is to make it to the finish line. 😅🤣😂

Not really a sport? Do you consider Golf to be a sport?

To be a sport, there has to be an element of danger.

In golf, one can be hit on the back of the head with a golf ball traveling over 100 MPH--this will cause the receiver to have a bad day. Also, down in Florida, one may encounter Alligators.....

I can't see any situation in pool where the competitor could have such a bad day as above.

9-Ball is very simple and yet you watch matches like the MC, and all kinds of things happen even in these short races. The shorter the race and the more important each game is only increases the level of pressure the players feel when at the table. If it ain't broke, don't fix
I don't think the rules of 9b are the thing that holds back pool.
If 9B is so perfect, then why have there been sooooo many changes done to it? Rack the 1 on the foot spot, no, don't do that, instead, rack the 9B on the spot. Magic rack, no magic rack. Break from anywhere, no, break from a break box instead, but don't let that break box get to big. Soft break, nope, no way, Cory showed the flaw in a perfect rack, so no more soft breaking. How does ONE player change the break of 9B for the entire world playing 9B? 3 balls past the side pockets to be a legal break, or is it 4 balls past the side pockets....I can't keep track. Oh yeah, let's not forget alternating breaks, and shorter races while we're at it.

Nothing wrong with 9B you say, then why on earth has the game changed so damn much, the rules are all over the place!! Tell me something will you. Can you name ONE other game of pool that has has sooooo many rule changes???

So the 9b rules are bad, because look at all the rules changes have occurred. Solution: change the 9b rules. LOL, you can't make this stuff up.

Don't pay the match you lost for $5k, and your opinion might get changed real quick😅🤣🤣

So sky diving you would consider a sport, instead of an activity right?, because you risk hitting the ground at over 100mph?

An activity can be considered a sport if it involves ...
  • Competition between two or more individuals or teams;
  • Rules of play that allow a winner to be determined;
  • A primary goal of victory;
  • Victory determined by the relative physical ability of the competitors, although strategy and chance may also play a role.

I personally don't consider either golf or pool a sport.

IMHO, a 'sport' is a contest between either individuals or teams. Wherein the real time actions of the opponent can effect the play of the other.

Fans of golf will say that another player's score may play a role in how their opponent opts to play a shot, (eg: try to reach the green in 2 rather than lay up). However, that is a choice not a forced situation. Now pretend the golfer's opponent was running full tilt at him/her. This forces the golfer to perform whatever he can before being tackled, (=sport).

Fans of pool will make the same argument, and claim that the position the opponent puts the other player will determine how he plays his next shot. To some extent that is correct. However the shooter can still do whatever he wants and is not forced into error my his opponent. We can used the same tackling situation for pool as well.

Rereading the above, I guess I'm thinking that reaction time is a key component in what makes sport, a sport.
Table tennis = sport
Gymnatics = not sport
...etc

I hurt my knee pretty bad one time by running into the coin slot on a bar table. SPORT!
