Florida cue makers circa 1985...? UPDATE

One mans misfortune might turn out to be my luck. A friend of my dad had a stroke a while back. Was quite the player I hear. Long story short... his kids are douche bags and he has a nice cue that needs a good home. I have never seen the cue. Have not even seen the guy in years. From what I hear he paid $2500 for it about 25 years ago. Supposedly from a cue maker in Florida. Possibly a cue maker with last name starting with "S". All I can think of is Dennis Searing but not sure about the price/time frame. Either way the guy wants to GIVE me the cue in October when he is in town. I don't know if I can accept a cue of who knows what value now. Not without at least letting him know the potential value. But he has got to know. I guess if he twists my arm I can't offend the guy by not taking his cue. So any guesses on what this baby might be? No matter what, pics in October!

* UPDATE * Well I haven't taken possession of the cue yet but I am picking it up at my parents house tomorrow. From the description I got I think it may be a Meucci (doesn't say Meucci I dont think). It says Jim Rempe (not Jimmy) on the butt and has the logo of him down on a shot. It is birdseye with two shafts. White linen wrap with blue specs. Maybe oak inlays. Wish I knew more but will have to wait until tomorrow to be sure. Will post pics then. Any info before then would be appreciated. I can't seem to find anything close on the web. Excited!:grin-square::grin-square::grin-square:

Looks like Searing started in Florida in 1991, so I guess it must be another cue maker. Can't seem to find any other Florida cue makers from the 80's with an "S" last name. . . :frown:

The only one I can think of is Star Cues by Abe Rich.
I'm not sure if his cues sold for that much back then.

Ya. I just checked. Arnot started up in 1990. I thought maybe if he was in the business back then, he might know who the cue maker is/was.

You may still want to PM him. He's a long time Florida resident. Born and raised here.

Of course, accept the cue as graciously as possible. He knows it will have more meaning to you and your father than anybody else he knows and he wants his cue to have a good home. We all know we're mortal, but having a stroke kind of shoves it in your face.

Chris

Thanks for leads thus far. Wish my dad knew more about it. He just said when he brought the cue into a hall he couldn't make it to the table without action all over him. Maybe the Florida clue is wrong and the "S" is for Gus... C'mon October!

You joked about it being a Szamboti, but there is something to think about.

One comedian said Florida is the place where old **** go to die, but here is some thoughts.

Alot of folks go to Florida when they retired from the Northeast. They brought their antiques, cars, and yes pool cues with them. I know a guy that made a good living going to estate sales in Florida and taking them back up to the Northeast to sell again...He joked that they just made a circuit and he profited each time. (He also bought antiques from the midwest and sold them on both coasts, but that is another story)

Trust me, there are alot of Balabuska and Szamboti cues in Florida.

My gut tells me that $2500 value is a fish story, and I suspect it is a Star Cue, but I wish you the best of luck.

Your friend in pool,

Ken

I left Miami in 1981. My brother in law still lived down there. I'd kind of forgotten about it but I gave my Brother in law about 5 cues after I moved back to Cincinnati somewhere near that time frame, and I used to use an "S" as a logo on my cues. I never sold any cues in that price range back then, but I don't know what my now ex brother in law did with the cues I gave him to sell. I'm not saying this is one of my early cues, but it is a possibility. Now that I think about it more, I also gave my father in law a cue and he's getting up in age. His last name is LaChapelle if that helps any.

You could also check with Rick Howard- he's down there now, but more importantly, before he was making cues he was touring around and the guy he was touring with visited every cue maker in the US back then....

He might have some insight!

Well if that is the logo, then in all likely hood it's a cue made by Adam cue company. If that is the case, the guy who made the cue may have been Samuri Sam.

Well the "S" fits. Samuri Sam. If he worked from Florida even better. Thanks for clues. Off to google!

Thanks for the pic. I would guess S-5 if I had to. How do they play? Did they usually come with 2 shafts? Values seem to be all over the place so I really will have no idea until I get some pics up I guess. Having a hard time finding much info really. Still excited...

OK. Got a good description over the phone while looking at the picture you posted. It is the S8 on the far right. 2 chalked shafts. Not going to be able to pick up until tomorrow or Tuesday. Was this a Samurai Sam creation? If so do you have any information about him? Adam cues are new to me and any info will be news to me. Might have some phone pics coming soon.
Thanks again, Ron

Got some pics:
