I heard a crazy story from my dentist the other day. The cue case I was carrying reminded him of his brother, Carlos Escobar, who dissapeared from their home in the Bronx at age 15. The family thought he was dead, but 12 years later he reappeared with a Mercedes and a big bankroll. My dentist told me that his brother had $5mil in a bank account and a house in Florida. He supposedly won this money playing pool. The brother went on to Med School and is now a successful hospital administrator. Judging from my dentist's age, I'd guess that this happened in the sixties and seventies.

I'm sure that my dentist believed what he was telling me, but $5mil is not believable. Nevertheless, I want to ask those of you who were playing then if you remember a high rolling Puerto Rican (no, not Columbian) New Yorker based in Florida named Carlos Escobar.

My guess is that his money came from something he didn't want to tell his family about and his pool hobby was his best explanation for wealth without employment, but I obviously don't know.

I love this board and the access it gives us to the knowledge, memories, and insights of pool's luminaries. Thanks, guys

Assuming no-one clever enough to qualify as a dentist could possibly have believed such a tale from his brother, the dentist is probably either an inveterate liar or had been indulging in recreational use of his surgery's supply of drugs just before you arrived;) :)

That sounds like to main drug dude in Scarface starring Al Pacino.To build that in 12 years playing pool,house,5 mil in da bank,Mercedes,you have to get your hands dirty...........a couple of times.

Carlos Escobar was the name of a famous drug dealer, one of the biggest. He was killed by the cops a couple of years ago.
 
You are meaning to say Pablo Escobar I believe. He was killed in a gunbattle with the "Search Bloc" in Dec. 1993.

I grew up in Miami in the 70s and "Carlos Escobar's" were a dime a dozen and most all of them that had 5 million dollar bank rolls were in the import business. We had a guy we all used to rob at the golf course that was a private pilot for a "Carlos Escobar" type dude until he died trying to crash land a plan in the columbian rain forest while being chased by Air Force F-4s working in conjunction with the DEA.
 
I see that everyone else thinks basically the same thing that I did about this story. I am certain that Mr. Escobar has at least his family and his employer believing that pool can pay the big bucks.

Exactly ! And then you're forced to say the same thing that I often say to my wife....... "Say hello to my little friend.' :)
