Food, health and Pool..How important........

The Europeans are way ahead of the American pool players on diet and exercise.... I know for a fact that when Ralf Eckert took Hunter Lombardo on as a project that Hunter had to keep a log of what he had consumed over the week. I think he had to list his activities as well but I cannot recall that part for sure....

Glad you are starting to fell a bit better Geno... Been super busy but the sighting is coming along.. Have a question or 2 that I am gonna bounce off of you when I get a chance.....

This is true but Hunter was working on this long before his experience with Ralf. He is in the Play Long ~ Finish Strong work-out dvd. Which was done in or around 2007. His training , hard work and willingness to go the extra mile really shows.

Beans

Beans
Beans are a miracle food (find others). They lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar and insulin production, promote digestive health and protect against cancer. If you think of fiber, protein and antioxidants, and immediately think whole grains, meat and fruit, then think again—beans offer all three in a single package.

An assortment of phytochemicals found in beans has been shown to protect cells from cancerous activity by inhibiting cancer cells from reproducing, slowing tumor growth. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health reported that women who consumed beans at least twice a week were 24 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, and multiple studies have tied beans to a reduced risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and breast and colon cancers.

Beans deliver a whopping amount of antioxidants, which help prevent and fight oxidative damage. In fact, the USDA's ranking of foods by antioxidant capacity places three varieties of beans (red, red kidney and pinto) in the top four—and that's among all food groups. They also contain tryptophan, which can help regulate appetite, aid in sleep and improve mood. Many are also rich in folate, which plays a significant role in heart health. You'll also get decent amounts of potassium, magnesium, vitamin B1 and B2, and vitamin K. Soybeans are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.

In Chinese medicine, various types of beans have been used to treat alcoholism, food poisoning, edema (particularly in the legs), high blood pressure, diarrhea, laryngitis, kidney stones, rheumatism and dozens of other conditions.

How much: Aim for a minimum of two servings of beans per week.

Tip: Adzuki and mung beans are among the most easily digested; pinto, kidney, navy, garbanzo, lima and black beans are more difficult to digest.

Kiwi Fruit

Kiwifruit
This tiny, nutrient-dense fruit packs an amazing amount of vitamin C (double the amount found in this fruit), has more fiber than apples and beats bananas as a high-potassium food. The unique blend of phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals found in kiwifruit helps protect against heart disease, stroke, cancer (commandments to prevention) and respiratory disease. Kiwifruit's natural blood-thinning properties work without the side effects of aspirin and support vascular health by reducing the formation of spontaneous blood clots, lowering LDL cholesterol and reducing blood pressure. Multiple studies have shown that kiwifruit not only reduces oxidative stress and damage to DNA but also prompts damaged cells to repair themselves.

In Chinese medicine they are used to accelerate the healing of wounds and sores.

How much: Aim to eat one to two kiwifruit a day while they're in season, for the best taste and nutrition. California-grown kiwifruit are in season from October through May, and New Zealand kiwifruit are available between April and November.

Tips: Kiwifruit contain enzymes (what are those?) that activate once you cut the fruit, causing the flesh to tenderize. So if you're making a fruit salad, cut the kiwifruit last.

[...] because of all the people who sold out and all of the imbeciles that think the planet can take being poisoned for eternity.

Actually, that's a pretty arrogant point of view. There's a very famous comedian (who, sadly, because of genetics / congenital heart disease is no longer with us) has something very intelligent to say about:

George is my favorite comedian of all time. His shows will live on forever.

Great post. thanks....

Since less than a year ago I've played so much pool that my body demands regular sleep and nutrition to grow. While walking the meat window of my local mart, I saw delicious clean meat but landed a few fish with skin on. During my knuckle-head years, I trained with really heavy weights.Influenced by my knuckle head buddies to gargle protein shakes and snort l-glutamin, I probably did unrepairable damages...know that I think about it. I still eat meat, chicken and a little steak here and there, but less because of Max Eberle. I somehow ventured on to his website to watch Videos of animals being killed for our fine taste. If you ever hear a bull getting his balls chopped off without pain medicine----Its the worse horror movie I have ever seen. Have a nice delicious lunch.

Then, since I'm into skin on fish now...I walk into a fresh fish market to order catfish....a dufus has to club the fish with a baton. My butcher is waring bifocals and he misses a few times. I can't eating anything wtf?

Hey Sean, I don't think he was being arrogant. And yes, George is funny, but I don't really believe his comic genius is a real statement of today's times, just a way to twist certain things to be funny. And he did it well.

It just seems odd to me that companies such as BP in Indiana are allowed to dump so many tons of chemicals in Lake Michigan every year. Not to mention many other companies.

I mean, this is the water we drink and shower in Chicago and most of the suburbs. Heck, our American ancestors in parts of Europe and Africa use to go "potty" in the same stream in which they drank from, and the sewage system was atrocious for many many decades. Yet, here in the 21st century we dump chemicals into the main drinking hole that supports 20 -30 million folks in 4 states.

I'm not sure if the folks doing the dumping, the politicians that allow it, or the folks who continue to drink Lake Michigan water are the real dummies. I don't have the answers, but it certainly cannot be to dump toxic chemicals into our only drinking water source. There has got to be a better way than that. And does not sound that much better than the days of old of taking a dump in the stream that you drank from...

Take care, RJ

That is really scary stuff. Nothing can be done about it huh?

After not eating any meat for about 3 or 4 days I ate some chicken with my veggies and I kind of got sick to my stomach. Wasn't terrible but just not good.

What's that all about. Any vegaterians out there with the answers?

I just needed to share this with everyone,

How important is the food we eat when it comes to playing pool?

Over the years I have seen many players that seemed to me to have taken it to the extreme so I thought. Now it seems to me the longer I live the more I am seeing that they were probably right.

Just recently I was hurt in a little accident while crawling under my motorhome to jack it up a little. It fell down crushing my chest. I was under it sideways so it broke 3 ribs on the right side and one on the left. Had some internal bleeding but that stopped after about 5 days. I would have gotten killed but the tires were still on it so it just kind of bottomed out when it came down and bounced back up. Kind of like swatting a fly. That was me. The fly.

But the healing up process has been very painful and challenging to say the least.

Nothing I did seemed to help this healing process along and I was really sick of taking those pain pills. It was time to get my brain back. But the body just seemed to just not be able to heal up very good. Nothing seemed to work. Ice, heat or massage, it just seemed futile.

Then I watched this documentary called Forks over Knives on Netflicks. It is about these doctors that did these huge studies for years in different parts of the world to study peoples diets and sickness related to what they ate.

Some famous person, I don't remember who, said that some day that the food will be the medicine. I'm beginning to think for sure that this is more true now than ever.

I'm pretty sure now that the food will not only keep us healthy but by staying healthy we can really enhance ones pool game. And I know there are so many of us out there , if we can play a little better would be willing to try many things. Including the food. Not only for life but for the game.

After watching Forks over Knives I got inspired. Nothing has seemed to help my pain or seem to help my healing. I went to Walmart and bought a bunch of healthy food. I know what to buy. It was pretty simple. No meat or by products of meat. Alot of veggies and some salad dressing.

My regular diet was Eggs in the morning and chicken with some veggies for dinner and some low glycemic bread. I was trying to be healthy and being diabetic I know what I can eat and what I can't. I thought I was doing pretty good. But my body kept hurting and was just not seeming to heal very good.

Basically all I did was cut out all the meat and byproducts of meat and to my surprise the next day I woke up with alot less pain. And this was a big relief believe me. So i thought am I just to this stage in my healing where I was just starting to get better or could the food be making the difference?

So I tried a little experiment on my own. I didn't want to just give up the food i liked unless it was of real benefit. So I ate my regular diet the next day. It was hard to lay down again to start when I went to bed and I woke up early from the pain like I had been. It was pretty tough again. Like a step backwards.

Screw this. I started right away in the morning eating the all veggie foods that I had bought and I kept it up all day. To my surprise it was easier to lay down when I went to bed that night, I slept 8 hours and the pain is about 80% less than it's been.

Here's a review of this documentary that inspired my new eating plan.

Excellent! Everyone should see this movie! The message is clear and the research is profound....Yes, fruits and veggies, whole nuts and grains could just save your Life! Hippocrates was right when he said: let food be your Medicine and Medicine be your Food I really hope people sit up and listen!

We saw a premier showing of this movie at the beginning of May 2011. It challenged us to change our diet which in six weeks has resulted in more energy, weight loss, better sleep, and a healthier attitude. Several months ago we watched the documentary - Food Incorporated - , which reveals the problems in the our food supply; - Forks over Knives - presents the solution. If you are interested in the science behind - Forks over Knives -, then the book - The China Study - by T. Colin Campbell, PhD is a must read. If you are interested in preventing and reversing heart disease, then the book - Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease - by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D. is a must read. If you are interested in all the other modern aliments that are now part of the American experience (obesity, cancer, diabetes, etc.), then the book - Eat to Live - by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. is a must read. This movie should be required in our schools! - Forks over Knives - has shown us that we can take control of our health by what we eat! -- And for those who think that the answer is to return to hunter-gatherer diet, I suggest that early man didn’t live long enough for a diet high in meat and fat to cause heart disease or cancer.

Save not just your life but the QUALITY of your life. This is a great shortcut to gaining the insight from the book, The China Study. See this movie.

OMG IT WAS SO GOOD. so good. so good. so good. omg so good. unbelievably good, dude, good.

The basis of this film is great. Whole foods are the way to a healthier life and less disease. Taking a pill from the doctor is rarely the answer and many times leads to more problems. However, their statistics and studies are off. They claim that in societies where animal protein and dairy is consumed, there are higher rates of Cancer, Heart Disease, etc. These are studies based on corn fed beef, dairy filled with hormones and pasteurized from Cows that are corn fed, non-cage free chickens, etc. If these same studies were ever done with food in its natural intended state, the results would most likely be different. Some animal products are good for you and provide some nutrients you cannot get from non-animal sources. Either way, I agree with the majority of this film. Good food for thought.

I just wanted to share this with some AZers. I know some of you are really trying to bring your game to the next level. I know that the food is the way to go as far as your health. If you don't have your health you don't have pool.

Take a look at Forks over knives. As you all know I'm big on testimonials and it doesn't get any better than this. These guys dedicated like 20 years of their lives to these studies to try and help figure this all out. It's there for anyone that wants to learn.

This one hour of your life watching this will be well spent time. If it helps one person out there because of what I wrote here then it was time well spent for sure.

Have a great day. geno.............
VEGAN WORKS!
Surprised you didn't switch sooner, knowing how much you played against and admired Louie Lemke. As you may remember, the team that he and I played on in 1986-87, was an all-vegan team. During a two-year stretch, we won almost 100 team and singles tournaments.
It was also a no cigarette, limited alcohol team and we all used yoga to help stay in shape.

Humans were built to eat meat, the problem is the additives they put in the animals to make them grow faster, bigger, meatier.
That's the stuff we don't process well.
Some people's genetics will tolerate the stuff , others won't.
I still eat meat , but only about 20% of what I used to.
I don't feel better because of it , but I probably waited too long to change.
Our food is polluted, our water is polluted the air is polluted. I am surprised we can still live in this environment.
I don't really care for me, I had a chance at life, but my grandchildren are going to have a hard time because of all the people who sold out and all of the imbeciles that think the planet can take being poisoned for eternity.
BUILT TO EAT MEAT?
Built to eat meat? The sciences of biology and physiology shows us that carnivorous animals have much different digestive systems than human animals. We're actaually omnivorous, but rather close to the vegetarian end of the spectrum. By the way, if you're really concerned about the environment and especially clean water, animal agriculture does more damage to the planet than any other industry, including being responsible for at least 80% of soil loss and at least half of all water pollution.

Whenever i would be at a tourny and louie was there he would talk me into going to the best vegetarian retuarant there was in town.

Of course at that time I thought it was kind of off the wall.

Billy Steel, Whitey lee. The list goes on and on.

I guess you can try to show someone something but until they are ready to learn they don't get it most of the time.

I remember don. Thanks geno...........

Raw Foods and Health

There is a lot to be said about the "standard American diet" and some changes for a more healthy lifestyle. I am a chiropractor and my wife has had cancer and we went through that with some IV's of vitamins prescribed from an N.D. who specializes in that stuff and she came out of it fine about 7 years ago. The IV's after her chemo kept her hair from falling out and she had very little nausea. She had some flair up of symptoms (which turned out not to be a cancer) recently and I started doing some research on natural therapies. So much can be done with diet and nutrition alone that I said to her why wait to get cancer before we change our lifestyle and do something to prevent acute and chronic diseases. Anyway a friend of mine has adult onset diabetes and I found a DVD "Simply Raw, reversing diabetes in 30 days." They documented 6 people that went through the 30 day program and the results were amazing! It is like boot camp with raw foods but the results speak volumes. Even a type 1 diabetic taking 70mg. of insulin a day was able to reduce it to 5 mg. a day. It is expensive (about 12K at the Rejuvenation Life Center in Arizona) but it works. But there is no reason you couldn't do it yourself with some study and research. A pool guru (whom everybody knows on AZ) told me he went to a similar center in Florida and almost every person there had cancer and was there for treatment with diet and nutrition. An excellent website for cancer treatment is http://www.cellectbudwig.com/

Some of my favorite foods are greasy cheeseburgers, greasy tacos, bacon, real butter (I could ALMOST eat it with a spoon), beef (I love me a good meatloaf), ice cream, and bar-b-que. I also drink close to 2 gallons of milk a week all by myself.

That said, I don't shoot pool worth a crap, but I know for sure that my diet has NOTHING to do with it. I will never judge/criticize someone over THEIR diet, but I'm gonna die fat & sassy!!!

Maniac (you only go around ONCE)

If I lived in your neck of the woods,we'd be good friends.I like your menu:smile:

Yeah, I'd think we got more of our food from gathering than we did hunting. Pretty much any nutritionist today will echo that by advising that we eat mostly grains, vegetables, and fruit. I suspect we're "meant" to eat some meat, but not nearly as much as we currently do.

I went to a nutritionist a few years ago, and her advice was to divide the plate into a half and two quarters. Veggies go in the half, starchy carbs in one quarter, and meat or fish in the other quarter. That's probably a good, basic approach for most people. Of course, how you prepare the food is tremendously important.

It wasn't until I gave up dairy (lactose intolerance) and started eating healthier in general that I realized how political food can be. Order a certain kind of food in mixed company, and people will judge you on the spot - sometimes out loud.

Healthy eating wouldn't affect pool as much as it would a high-impact activity. But healthy eating isn't about just that.

Be careful not to confuse correlation with causation. For example, quitting the meat might have had NOTHING to do with your feeling better.

I've been in the nutrition biz for 30 years and have heard of every diet there is as the best there is....ain't true.

Eating well is important, for sure, be careful about jumping to conclusions that may be wrong....that could cost you a lot of time and trouble.

hmmmm

That is really scary stuff. Nothing can be done about it huh?

Promises, and more promises. Just seems so illogical to dump toxic chemicals, and we are talking about thousands of TONS every year, and that the water gets processed, and BINGO it is now drinking water again.

I mean, the Great Lakes is the largest surface fresh water on the freaking planet.

Luckily I moved to an area that is on well, and we do NOT use Lake Michigan water. I grew up with it though as I had no choice. But it seems senseless to allow the chemicals to be dumped into the lakes where folks not only swim but catch fish. And also shower and use it for drinking water. Why not just put the chemicals someone else, burry them in a vault, burn them, I don't know, but you don't put them in fresh water that we need to survive??? crazy. I"m not some left wing tree hugger, I'm a conservative, but would like to also have clean water and clean air for myself and my family....
