Food, health and Pool..How important........

I just needed to share this with everyone,

How important is the food we eat when it comes to playing pool?

Over the years I have seen many players that seemed to me to have taken it to the extreme so I thought. Now it seems to me the longer I live the more I am seeing that they were probably right.

Just recently I was hurt in a little accident while crawling under my motorhome to jack it up a little. It fell down crushing my chest. I was under it sideways so it broke 3 ribs on the right side and one on the left. Had some internal bleeding but that stopped after about 5 days. I would have gotten killed but the tires were still on it so it just kind of bottomed out when it came down and bounced back up. Kind of like swatting a fly. That was me. The fly.

But the healing up process has been very painful and challenging to say the least.

Nothing I did seemed to help this healing process along and I was really sick of taking those pain pills. It was time to get my brain back. But the body just seemed to just not be able to heal up very good. Nothing seemed to work. Ice, heat or massage, it just seemed futile.

Then I watched this documentary called Forks over Knives on Netflicks. It is about these doctors that did these huge studies for years in different parts of the world to study peoples diets and sickness related to what they ate.

Some famous person, I don't remember who, said that some day that the food will be the medicine. I'm beginning to think for sure that this is more true now than ever.

I'm pretty sure now that the food will not only keep us healthy but by staying healthy we can really enhance ones pool game. And I know there are so many of us out there , if we can play a little better would be willing to try many things. Including the food. Not only for life but for the game.

After watching Forks over Knives I got inspired. Nothing has seemed to help my pain or seem to help my healing. I went to Walmart and bought a bunch of healthy food. I know what to buy. It was pretty simple. No meat or by products of meat. Alot of veggies and some salad dressing.

My regular diet was Eggs in the morning and chicken with some veggies for dinner and some low glycemic bread. I was trying to be healthy and being diabetic I know what I can eat and what I can't. I thought I was doing pretty good. But my body kept hurting and was just not seeming to heal very good.

Basically all I did was cut out all the meat and byproducts of meat and to my surprise the next day I woke up with alot less pain. And this was a big relief believe me. So i thought am I just to this stage in my healing where I was just starting to get better or could the food be making the difference?

So I tried a little experiment on my own. I didn't want to just give up the food i liked unless it was of real benefit. So I ate my regular diet the next day. It was hard to lay down again to start when I went to bed and I woke up early from the pain like I had been. It was pretty tough again. Like a step backwards.

Screw this. I started right away in the morning eating the all veggie foods that I had bought and I kept it up all day. To my surprise it was easier to lay down when I went to bed that night, I slept 8 hours and the pain is about 80% less than it's been.

Here's a review of this documentary that inspired my new eating plan.

Excellent! Everyone should see this movie! The message is clear and the research is profound....Yes, fruits and veggies, whole nuts and grains could just save your Life! Hippocrates was right when he said: let food be your Medicine and Medicine be your Food I really hope people sit up and listen!

We saw a premier showing of this movie at the beginning of May 2011. It challenged us to change our diet which in six weeks has resulted in more energy, weight loss, better sleep, and a healthier attitude. Several months ago we watched the documentary - Food Incorporated - , which reveals the problems in the our food supply; - Forks over Knives - presents the solution. If you are interested in the science behind - Forks over Knives -, then the book - The China Study - by T. Colin Campbell, PhD is a must read. If you are interested in preventing and reversing heart disease, then the book - Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease - by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D. is a must read. If you are interested in all the other modern aliments that are now part of the American experience (obesity, cancer, diabetes, etc.), then the book - Eat to Live - by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. is a must read. This movie should be required in our schools! - Forks over Knives - has shown us that we can take control of our health by what we eat! -- And for those who think that the answer is to return to hunter-gatherer diet, I suggest that early man didn’t live long enough for a diet high in meat and fat to cause heart disease or cancer.

Save not just your life but the QUALITY of your life. This is a great shortcut to gaining the insight from the book, The China Study. See this movie.

OMG IT WAS SO GOOD. so good. so good. so good. omg so good. unbelievably good, dude, good.

The basis of this film is great. Whole foods are the way to a healthier life and less disease. Taking a pill from the doctor is rarely the answer and many times leads to more problems. However, their statistics and studies are off. They claim that in societies where animal protein and dairy is consumed, there are higher rates of Cancer, Heart Disease, etc. These are studies based on corn fed beef, dairy filled with hormones and pasteurized from Cows that are corn fed, non-cage free chickens, etc. If these same studies were ever done with food in its natural intended state, the results would most likely be different. Some animal products are good for you and provide some nutrients you cannot get from non-animal sources. Either way, I agree with the majority of this film. Good food for thought.

I just wanted to share this with some AZers. I know some of you are really trying to bring your game to the next level. I know that the food is the way to go as far as your health. If you don't have your health you don't have pool.

Take a look at Forks over knives. As you all know I'm big on testimonials and it doesn't get any better than this. These guys dedicated like 20 years of their lives to these studies to try and help figure this all out. It's there for anyone that wants to learn.

This one hour of your life watching this will be well spent time. If it helps one person out there because of what I wrote here then it was time well spent for sure.

Have a great day. geno.............

Hi Gene, I hope that you are doing well. I watched forks over knives a few months ago and found the movie very interesting and informative. I have some friends that switched to the vegan lifestyle a few years ago and they seem to really like it. The big challenge in this lifestyle is getting enough protein in your diet. Just make sure to do your research on this lifestyle because it does take some planning to get enough protein.

One of these days I'm going to make some significant changes to my diet. But, the damn Kansas City BBQ makes it hard  Good Luck!

Darryl

Good post, sorry to hear about your accident though hope you're doing well. I haven't seen that movie myself, but actually just recently while watching some Taiwanese commentaries on youtube I heard mention about a similar topic (health in general in relation to performance in pool). I think staying healthy in generally is a huge help just because of how much the game depends on a strong and positive mentality; rumour has it that Ronnie O'Sullivan trains regularly in marathon running to keep up his snooker game? Not sure whether or not that's just a legend, but I believe it certainly doesn't hurt to sleep on a routine schedule, eat nutritious, and keep up a daily exercise plan.

The Europeans are way ahead of the American pool players on diet and exercise.... I know for a fact that when Ralf Eckert took Hunter Lombardo on as a project that Hunter had to keep a log of what he had consumed over the week. I think he had to list his activities as well but I cannot recall that part for sure....

Glad you are starting to fell a bit better Geno... Been super busy but the sighting is coming along.. Have a question or 2 that I am gonna bounce off of you when I get a chance.....

What is the largest Bean in the world?

HUMAN BEANING,

Beans are cheap and they are an excellent source of protien.

Plus in the Forks and Knives they talk about how much protien there actually is in the veggies. It's quite a lot. Kind of a myth that we have to have that meat. Or at least pretty much what you need?

Maybe I'm wrong. I need to watch it again.

Good to hear from you Darryl.

Have a great weekend geno.............

Hmmm

Darryl, don't put any stock into the old "protein" myth. Most, and I mean most Americans don't need the amount of protein they think they need. Plus, many veggie burgers have more protein than the same size hamburger.

David Scott, who won the Ironman Triathlon SIX times, during the 8 year span from 1980 to 1987. He then came out of retirement at the age of 40 in 1994 and took second ! The IronMan contest requires a 2.4 mile swim, 115 mile bike race, and a 26 mile run, consecutively and usually completed in just over 8 hours (for the top dogs) He is now in the US Triathlon HOF and is currently an coach, fitness consultant, commentator and motivational speaker.

During his heyday, David was by all accounts considered the fittest athlete on the planet by numerous fitness magazines and health experts. And yes, he is a vegetarian.

Follow your dreams

I'm into fried tilapia now. Then there is broiled tilapia at this Thai restaurant that is making me saluvate. I think it is easier on the digestive track to eat sea creatures. Maybe its because we were amphibians===>Monkeys=====>Humans.

So my theory is since we only have two fangish teeth, we should only eat about 15% meat in our diet----my spaghetti has a little of really minced turkey meat in the sauce. The other day, I dreamed a little Ethiopian kid was chasing me so I'm cutting down on chicken. I'm sure thats what it reads.

Some of my favorite foods are greasy cheeseburgers, greasy tacos, bacon, real butter (I could ALMOST eat it with a spoon), beef (I love me a good meatloaf), ice cream, and bar-b-que. I also drink close to 2 gallons of milk a week all by myself.

That said, I don't shoot pool worth a crap, but I know for sure that my diet has NOTHING to do with it. I will never judge/criticize someone over THEIR diet, but I'm gonna die fat & sassy!!!

Maniac (you only go around ONCE)

Nice thread Gene. I will see if I can find that movie.

I've been making moves toward eating healthier, less red meat, more veggies, more fruits.

I think it takes more blood to digest red meat than it does veggies and fruits and maybe the blood can be busy repairing the damage to your body rather than processing difficult to digest foods.

Get a Ninja food processor. It can chop stuff up so fast and so fine you will be surprised. Some orange juice, some blueberries, some strawberries, a banana and throw in some fresh Kale and you've got a healthy supplement to a difficult to digest meal. I've started to freeze the strawberries because they go bad quick. I probably drink one of these JoeyA Stan Shuffett smoothies every other day.

If someone can tell me how to reduce the blow back on the beans, I will try to increase my intake of them.

If someone has a GOOD veggie smoothie that is easy to make with a food processor (not a juicer), let me know. The Ninja chopper my son gave me as a gift is awesome as it is ferocious and cleans up EASY. My kind of processor.

Hi there Joey,

Actually beans really get a bad rap and it's because everyone eats those Bush Beans that have all the sugar in them. They add so much crap to them that you can hardly taste the stupid bean itself. But I think thats what they are trying to do. Make it better.

There are about 10 different kinds of beans right at Walmart in the cans. They are cheap and they are a huge source of protein. 1?2 cup with any meal is plenty. Alot of carbs there also.

Vegetarians know this for sure. I ate this way all day and I'm feeling pretty good and I even think I'm thinking better. How's that for for a wide open statement................

Bush beans are not the way to go. So much sugar, spice and everything nice that comes out nasty in the end.

Have a great day geno............

What's the old saying...."you are what you eat". Don't get me wrong as I am certainly no health food nut job, but all things are ok in moderation. I love a good steak, sauces made with heavy cream/butter just to name a few. I don't eat them every day, but do treat myself when I feel like it. Veggies and fresh fruit are really good for you, and I love both.

Humans were built to eat meat, the problem is the additives they put in the animals to make them grow faster, bigger, meatier.
That's the stuff we don't process well.
Some people's genetics will tolerate the stuff , others won't.
I still eat meat , but only about 20% of what I used to.
I don't feel better because of it , but I probably waited too long to change.
Our food is polluted, our water is polluted the air is polluted. I am surprised we can still live in this environment.
I don't really care for me, I had a chance at life, but my grandchildren are going to have a hard time because of all the people who sold out and all of the imbeciles that think the planet can take being poisoned for eternity.

I have recently noticed the same as was performing some minor juicing experimentation. The longest I made was one week and felt great, but the god damned thing broke...and I'm back to eating Doritos (Nacho Cheese) and other man made processed chit.

Your post almost got me thinking about purchasing Jack L.'s juicer I seen at Big Lots for $70 bucks the other day (at Wally world for $100).

Maybe that Mad Max will chime in as he is a vegan. He would shed some great insight to longevity of the lifestyle change and what it will do for your pool game.

Max... MAX...are you out there?

You need to watch this documentary. these guys really did some foolproof studies. I don't think it was about the money like alot of other stuff out there.

That's cool. I've never really investigated the vegan lifestyle. So I poked around a little bit and your right protein isn't an issue with a vegan diet. But, calcium, the vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids are a challenge to get with the diet.

The funny thing about the movie was they only said vegan once in it. There apparently is a negative response by the public to the word vegan. The term they used is plant based diet. Anyway, the vegan lifestyle would have to be much healthier than the average American diet.

Yeah Vegan has negative connotations... You tell me some guy is a vegan and I automatically wanna bet he uses coasters too.....

Jack Lalane, gotta love that guy.
I saw him on a Groucho Marx program years ago and he said he was living in a tree house . I think it was in the early 70s I think it was a rerun of the old You Bet Your Life show. I found one on You Tube but it is not the one I am talking about

good one Gene

Another great documentary is Fat ,Sick ,and Nearly Dead. I was talking to my lady tonight about the two of us doing a juice fast together.About two months ago I got down to one cooked meal a day and two pieces of salmon a week. Thanks for the reminder ,for sure it has to be a lifestyle and not a fad.If you lose money you can get it back ,however if you lose your health it may not be recoverable.I want to be posting on here for a long time ,I'm lucky in that I love greens ,kale ,broccoli and all that kind of thing.
