For those who didn't know, Little Joe...

Great stuff Bill. And you know I sure agree about Lil Joe's teaching ability.

Lil Joe can play pool and teach? Boy, the things you learn on this forum. :) I guess now someone will be saying that he knows how to cook a few Hispanic dishes too. :D

When Joe's name is mentioned I always fall back on the memory of him coming from behind and beating Reid Pierce in New Orleans at Rackateer's. It was quite impressive.

Since Bill's photos aren't coming up for me, I decided to post my own. Here is a series of photos I took a few weeks back as Joe did a show & tell with the article in question. The audience was me (taking pics), my wife, and our friend Alan (who owns the "razor sharp points" Olney that was discussed a lot recently--ebony forearm & coco points).

It's too bad for history's sake that the author goofed & mixed Joe's last name with his partner's. It should have read: "Lil" Joe Villapando & "Cheyenne Pete" Trujilo.

Now if I had a picture of Elvis holding me in his arms, I would find every magazine, buy up all of the available publications and burn them. :D :D

Have a good one, Little Joe. :)

Sorry to stir up such an old thread, but I ran across it today and was wondering about someone mentioned by Hemi at the top. He mentions a Ron Mayes playing partners with Artie. Does anyone know if his nickname is/was "Ronnie The Hat"? I'm wondering because if it's the person I'm thinking of, he used to own a small room near me and since it closed several years back, I haven't seen or heard a word about him until now. Just wondering if it's the same person and if so, if he's still around the Chicagoland area. BTW...the hall he used to have ownership in was in Portage, Indiana, which is about 45 miles from Chicago, just over the Indiana line 15 miles or so. Anybody have any info on Ronne "The Hat" Mayes?

Yes, ragbug, Ron Mayes, is Ronnie The Hat. Bald at a young age you couldn't get that hat off his head. Heard a girl complain he wouldn't even take it off,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well,,,,,,,,,,,you get the picture.

Hey Bill, I know this was an older post. But I remember getting this NBN and reading this article when it first came out. I also still have this copy in one of my boxes. What a great field to beat out for the cash.

Yep. That was Ronnie's room. Tom Jr. and a few other good players hung out there. Usually some decent action going on. Don't know what became of him since the room closed. Very good player. Very salty personality.

I think I remember him saying he still lived out in Illinois/Chicago somewhere at the time, so I'm wondering if he's still in the area. He should be in his mid 60's these days.

You are right, Satman. Super tough field. It's interesting that unlike many of the other championship quality teams Joe and Pete defeated, they were quite unknown. That's because Joe and Pete didn't want to be known at that time. They didn't want their faces spread all over the country. It simply would cost them money to be known. Joe and Pete didn't play many tournaments. There was no serious money in them. Then along comes this $20K event. Worth taking a shot at.

Little Joe and Pete were so unknown at the time even the publishers of the NBN got their names wrong in the photos. The first set of photos below is the way the NBN printed their names. The second set of photos is how it should have been printed. Seems even after their big win their anonymity was still assured.

Ron Mayes

Does anyone know if Ronnie the hat is still alive and kicking?

Kicking and Cue Ball control

Joe Villapando has the most knowledge about kicking, banking, and most of all cue ball control. I have taken private lessons from Joe and within four days of practicing, my kicking, banking, and cue ball control have jumped numerous levels. I would recommend his videos and if you can definitaly stop in for a lesson. I have tried the diamond system, even taken lessons from Mark Wilson, and nothing comes close to what Joe Villapando knows.

I have to be honest and admit that others know the same things that Joe knows, at least on a pool table. The big differences are that Joe is willing to teach what he knows which is very rare, has been able to quantify what he knows so it can be taught concisely, and he has a gift for teaching.

Maybe it isn't true now but forty years or so ago almost every pool hall had a wily old man that knew how to own the cue ball. He wasn't talking though and when the smart assed young kids thought they could beat that half-blind shaky handed senile old goober they had a very rude awakening!
