it may fetch more if it has a letter

Are you saying one of the finest collectors on AZ is lying and misrepresenting a cue?
If Marcus says its a duck, its s duck and I don't doubt his word.

With that.
Welcome to the forum, stick around, you may learn something.:)

Sore,

Just my opinion....but the man is right. I don't think he was questioning the fact that it was a real SouthWest cue (at least, I HOPE he wasn't).....he may have just been saying that the cue could fetch an even higher rock-bottom price if came with a letter from Laurie. On that, he would be absolutely correct. That 50 dollar letter can add another 200-500 to a cue, depending on the specs and such.

Without him clarifying...it's hard to say what he really meant....I'm just guessing that he wouldn't register today and have his first post be one of calling an AZB veteran out on the carpet.

For what it's worth.....and that's probably not much.

I agree. A letter may or may not help the sale. They are not hard to get and don't cost much considering they may increase sale value.
However Marcus isn't asking $3k for this cue. $1850 is dirt cheap with or without a letter from Laurie, and I'm sure the Seller knows how to go about getting it authenticated.:)

Maybe I took the reply wrong, but it just seemed a little brash for a "first time poster" to tell a "veteran poster" how to sell a cue.:D

Couldn't agree with you more. I'm hoping that it was just "new guy" jitters...and that what he intended to say came out wrong.

One thing's for sure....Marcus is offering this cue at a smokin' price!!! I almost bought it myself....but went another route.

And yep....the letters are VERY affordable to get....and can add serious value to a cue. Especially considering how many "tribute" cues are out there!! What a difference a few words on some nice letterhead can make!! :) :)

I have the same cue it is at Southwest now getting a refinish and a new shaft. I've been told that with the letter of authenticity it's value is around $3000.00. Laurie Franklin hasn't confirmed the year it was made yet but her first guess was 1982 or 1983. I'm just wondering why so cheap? The ferrules look very white to be original micarta?

The price wasn't that low when it was first listed.....looks like Marcus is in full Christmas mode....and is offering a gift to one lucky buyer.

Now, if he could only find a pic of his Avatar girl in an elf costume...........

Nice cue...

I think this is a very nice cue from Marcus at a very nice price. Maybe Sean from Cueaddicts or Chady, etc can chime in, but I don't think this is an extremely "cheap" price on the cue. Marcus has it priced to move, not underpriced, IMHO. This is a player...no veneers, rings at A/B/E only, so I don't see the $3000 value or any reason to "be afraid" that it is priced too cheap for some reason.

As for a letter from Laurie, certainly it would help prove authenticity, but again, unless the cue had all the bells and whistles or had some other provenance with it, I can't see it raising the price drastically...perhaps back up to Marcus' original price, but not more.

Could be, sir. With the letter, Marcus could stand firm on the 2300-2400 dollar plain, and be right on target.

I just got off the phone with the folks at SW this morning...and there have been a few come in that "required" letters...

Very nice folks....but it IS possible that the value quotes may be toward the higher end because they have a vested interest in keeping the market where it's been.

I do know this.....mine looks and feels awesome, and I hear the Franklin era cues are MONSTERS on the cloth. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Mark, the Franklin era cues are the top dogs, and if I bought a pre-date for myself, I would send it first thing to Laurie for the documentation. The issue here to me (perhaps I mis-read) is a "concern" by some folks that the cue is being way underpriced by Marcus, therefore "there must be something wrong with it". That is just not the case. #1, Marcus is one of the top people to do business with on AZB, and #2, the cue pricing is NOT out of line, neither the $2400 first asked, nor his "sale" price of $1850...top end and bottom end of the pricing structure for the cue, IMHO.

Completely agree, sir. When I first spoke with Marcus about this cue, it took an extremely high level of self control to not buy it on the spot....and I"m still kinda fighting it.

That negative connotation could very well be there....hard to say without hearing back from the gentleman that begged the question to begin with. I imagine we could speculate all day long about what he really meant to say......but worst case, it's bumped this cue to the top a half-dozen times in a short period.

I'm sending my pre-date off next Monday to get authenticated....and I agree with ya 100%. Personally speaking...the very first order of business after buying a non-lettered pre-date is to send it to Laurie to check it out. Peace of mind for the owner....and potential increases in value. All for the meager amount of 50 bucks. It's a win/win, no matter how you look at it.

I NEVER THOUGHT THIS CUE WOULD START ALL THIS.

A FEW THINGS THAT I WILL STATE IN MY OPINION:

I BET YOU MY LEFT TESTY IT'S A SW. IF YOU DON'T TRUST ME DON'T BUY IT.

A LETTER IS ABOUT 80 BUCKS FROM SW, BUT I AM TOO LAZY TO SEND IT.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CUE, AS A MATTER OF FACT IT IS ONE OF VERY FEW SW'S THAT I HAVE EVER LIKED THE HIT OF.

THE FERRULES, ARE PAPER BASED MICARTA, AND ARE ORIGINAL, JERRY USED ASBESTOS(YELLOW) MICARTA, AND HE USED PAPER(WHITE) MICARTA.

I WAS TIRED OF LOOKING AT THE CUE, AND JUST WANTED IT GONE, I WON'T GAURANTEE IT, BUT I WOULD BE ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THIS IS THE CHEAPEST PREDATE POINTED SW THAT HAS BEEN ON AZ BILLIARDS IN THE LAST 3 YEARS.

OH AND BY THE WAY, THE CUE IS SOLD

IT WAS ACTUALLY SOLD LAST NIGHT AT 6 PM, BUT THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME BACK IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER. I HAD 6 CALLS AFTER THAT FROM POTENTIAL BUYERS AS WELL.

I'M NOT TRYING TO ARGUE WITH ANYONE,I'M JUST STATING MY OPINION.

EVERYBODY HAVE A GOOD ONE.

I wasn't questioning the integrity of the seller...looking back now, I should have asked if he knew if the shafts were original. Predate covers a fairly large time period and a very early southwest with two original shafts is worth more to some people than one without the original shafts. Anyway I've been away from the game for over a decade and just rescently have started to get the itch to play again. Congradulations to the seller and buyer of this cue.

Larry

PS; Definately a learning experience, thanks for all the honest opinions.
