Freezing the Balls while racking your own ?

So I had something happen while playing the Scotty T Memorial Tournament last weekend . I've played some tournaments sure , but mostly I like action . So I'm in the loser's bracket ,not the B side as they call it sometimes but the LOSERS bracket lol I'm playing Justin Hall he is on the hill and I need two games . It's rack your own balls alternate breaks .He racks the balls I look at the rack , the wing ball is 1/8 off and the two balls behind the one ball are 1/8 apart ..... I say hey JHall those balls are way off bro I need u to rack the balls to where they touch . He says he can't get them to freeze and he is not gonna mess with them . We go back and forth for a min . I put my hand in front of the rack so he can't break the balls and the tournament director comes by and I tell him that he won't freeze the balls and had him look at the 1/8 inch gap so he knew I wasn't just b n a jerk . Which I have been known to be !!!!Lol.... I said he has to right ? The tournament director says ( It's rack your own and you can't make him rack them the way u want ) 100℅ he said that !!!!!!! I said all I want is for the balls to be frozen ....He said it's his rack and he can rack them how he wants .....WOW! I said so when itmy rack I can rack them as lose as I want and they can't make me re-rack and he said yes !!!!!!! I looked at people around and I said do y'all hear this ,,,they couldn't believe it either .... WOW ....... That really happened !!!!! Is that really how tournaments are these days ? That's my question.... Was I right or wrong ?

He's giving himself a bad rack and you objected to this? You're objection makes sense if he was purposely playing a soft break followed by a safety exchange but other than that I don't get the complaint. It doesn't sound like he was purposely wiring up any particular balls but instead he just didn't feel like taking forever to rack.

What am I missing?

If he wasnt freezing the back balls it opens up the chance that the 9 ball will come out like an unleased pitbull. Yeah.... That sounds great doesnt it?

He said the balls behind the one weren't even touching. Doesn't sound like he was wiring the wing balls or the nine to me.

I'm less concerned about the rack and more concerned about the TD's response.

The real test, which we can't observe now, is where the balls in the rack go on the break. Some players know what the different gaps are going to do. Some know how to rack the 9 dead. If the craters in the table cause some ball to be dead even though the balls are loose, the breaker has no interest in fighting the table to get a tight rack. I used to play on a table where the 9 ball was about 25% dead to the corner without manipulation -- that's just the way they racked.

Use a racking template. (which has the small problem of making the wing ball dead)

If this was the 9-Ball event, the flyer said making the 9 on the break in one of the racking-end corners did not count as a win.

[I didn't watch the event, so I can't confirm that.]

I'd protest here, I'm sure many players know that if you have a gap behind the 9 or behind one of the corner balls, those balls have a much higher chance of going in.

Even if the 9 does not count, it will still go near the corner pocket for an easy early combo, or will go in and the other player continues to shoot after spotting it.

You can't do much if the balls don't rack well, but you have to make a good attempt to rack them well.

I try to look at every situation in it's entirety and give every aspect a fair shake being as I'm just reading a story on here. It leaves room for those "you had to be there to see it" moments.

With that being said, just want to clear something up:

Are you sure you weren't just the slightest upset/nervous that Justin was on the hill and breaking in your B side matchup.... ready to put you out of the tournament.... and either subconsciously or consciously you had it in the back of your mind to do anything you could to find a way to get another shot at the table. At least slow him down, right?

I agree with others, gaps in the rack on certain tables makes balls go sometimes. If it's rack your own and the person is using the same rack as everyone else, racking in a diamond pattern with the one up front and the nine in the middle..... I don't know what can be said about how loose they are? It's like complaining how tight they are,to me. Just my opinion.

Rack's tilted yeah I get it. Loading balls I get that too. It's his rack, if they're straight and in some kind of assembly of order appearing to be a nine ball rack, buckle in and get ready for some of that action you like to play in so much. Because after this break you just might be available for some....

Tournament directors usually don't even have the limited knowledge of pool that the idiot commentators have. My last tournament, I had two pretty decent players that kept bad racking me intentionally and placing the 1 above the spot. It's all about cheating and sharking to win. They still wonder why nobody wants to sponsor pool.

"The object balls are racked as tightly as possible ..."

[WPA rules]

Thanks at large! Well there you go everyone, that's what can be said. As tightly as possible. Right there in the rule book.

So in a pickle throwing contest the rules state the jars must be sealed as tightly as possible, and this particular tournament is a "seal your own" event........

My opponent seals it, I put my hand on the jar after much inspection(which by the way, he eats all these pickles and I'm out) and pronounce to the pickle directer, "THEY CAN BE SEALED TIGHTER THAN THAT!!"

Nobody can rack perfectly, so how can your opponent be the judge of what rack is good and bad?

If they have knowledge of wiring the wing ball, they will just make you re-rack until the wing ball does not go.

Without a template rack, 1/32" is to be expected, 1/16" is acceptable, 1/8" is not. The TD should have asked him to rerack. If he can then show that is as tight as possible, it flies.

I'm less concerned about the rack and more concerned about the TD's response.

Me too!!!!! That's my question..... I'm not even worried bout the rack .... Usually you just work those things out but when he said it's his rack and I can't tell him how to rack AND they don't have to be frozen I was in disbelief!!!!!

It's not about this or that .... Im 47 and quit for about 12 years..... Is that a new rule ? If it's your rack then your apponant can't tell u to freeze the balls....That's all I'm asking ??? Justin Hall is cool dude and it was 4:30 in the morning so I'm sure we were both tired and stressed !!!!!! Just asking yall about the right or wrong thing \ rule ???? Thanks guys
