From now on, I'm calling it in the air!

I played in an 8-ball tournament last night. It was the first time I played in the tournament at this particular dive bar. My first opponent on the loser's side goes to flip the coin.

He holds it in his right hand, in a pre-launch position, thumb under the quarter, with his fist about 6 inches above the table. I call heads. He takes the coin with his other hand, turns it over, and puts it back in launch position, and then flips. The quarter flips forward, not up. On its way to the cloth, it does what looked like about two perfect flips and lands without bouncing. Tails! I immediately realize that I had been conned. LOL.

I didn't say anything about it, but his move made me determined to win. He broke, made a ball, and missed the first shot. I ran out. Karma's a b**ch, ain't it? LOL.

Anyway, from now on, I'm calling it in the air. Well, maybe if I play this particular guy again, I'll call it before hand again, and then change my call while its in the air. :D

I've had that problem before, now when some one asks me to call it I just make a flipping motion with my hand and wait for them to toss the coin.

I invented a flipping machine

Flip controversies seem to hound me too. There's a gal I play against who, instead of flipping the coin, sends it up so that it hovers like a flying saucer. I told her "There's a reason they call it the flip - the coin's suppose to flip over." Anyway, a couple weeks ago, I brought a spring loaded flipping machine that I invented to the tournament and showed her how she could flip a coin by placing it on the end of one of the launchers, depressing then releasing it. It produced a much better flip than she ever could.

LOL!! That's pretty funny. She should buy one from you and keep it in her case, or attached to the outside of it. :)

I do the same thing. Mike loses so many flips..he doesn't realize how many games he is giving up by calling it from across the room, lol.

I say lag for the break.:)

Egg-zackly. A lot of players will offer the choice, so I just say, "Since we're playing pool, we might as well lag". No one ever complains.

I see a lot of coin flips going on around me at tournaments, and they're honest flips. I get the impression that most people want to flip because it's faster, and they've been flipping coins ever since they were kids. Maybe a lot of them have no confidence in their lagging skills. But some people obviously want to flip for it because they're flip mechanics.

That's what he was -- a flip mechanic! LOL. Good one. :)

I totally agree, lagging is a way better way to do it. I do typically request to lag when someone holds out a coin. For some reason, come to think of it, I don't do this in bars. I don't know why. LOL. I can't really picture someone refusing to lag. Maybe I should have made title, "From now on, I'm saying, 'lets lag'". :D

Don't like the coin flip. All luck and also can involve cheating.

I like to lag. It is a skill and also gives you a feel for the table.

there is actuallysome odds to flipping. I readit somewhere on the net........seems like depending on what the coin is resting on on ur thumb and how high u flip. Like a foot made it tails more often than not, 2 foot made it heads. I used to have it memorized. Actually I try to get people to do rock paper scissors for break, for some reason they always do scissors.

LOL! If you get tired of Rock Paper Scissors, you could try Gun Monster Man. I posted this in a Rock Paper Scissor thread already, but I thought is funny, so here it is again... :D

Gun Monster Man, thats where the action is.

Stand back to back. On the count of 3, jump turning 180 degrees and land posing with your choice of gun, monster, or man.

- Monster kills man.
- Man beats gun b/c he's smart enough not to shoot himself.
- Monster doesn't understand a gun, but his curiosity gets the best of him, as he pulls the trigger on himself while inspecting it.

i can never win a coin toss but its a great idea to call it in the air. Someone should make a poll on whats the best way to see who breaks, Lagging, Coin Toss, or Fist Fight LOL. A lag is great as you can always tell the speed of the cloth.

Actually, contrary to popular belief, A COIN FLIP IS NOT RANDOM!

It has a great deal to do with which side the coin starts out on. Many times the coin is not actually flipping, but appears to be.

You can read more here.

I don't understand why people don't just lag all the time. Two reasons. A.) It's a test of skill not luck. B.) It doesn't take any longer than a coin toss.

In China pool rooms, the most popular method for deciding break in a non tournament match is rock, paper, scissors.

I cannot believe there is a thread about coin-flipping. Anybody here wanna flip for twenties?

Sure, you call and then I'll flip. I take PayPal. :D

I see alot of guys who do the "weak" coin flip in my area for tournaments,

So what I do if i know I am going to meet them in the tournament, I'll have a coin ready in hand when i get to the table and be set to flip the coin, and i will flip the coin good, and it generally will hit the table and spin for a few seconds too. I look at it this way, If i am the one flipping the coin and doing it fair, then I cant blame myself for calling head's when it lands tails.

But yes I've seen alot of guys do a coin flip like the one from " PoolHallJunkies" where Chazz Palminteri did. It takes about 4 flips and lands opposite of what you called.

I myself love to lag if someone agree's about it, i mean then if you lose, its your own stupid fault.

Issue

oh yes, I have run into the 'Coin Mechanics' quite often. If I have had an issue with them in the past, I specify what is a proper flip of the coin.
I especially do not like the ones that throw the coin into the slate and let it bounce trying to 'load up' the flip.

I will gladly lag against any opponent for the first break, but:

A proper flip is, to me:
1) The coin rests on the index finger and thumb with the thumb bent to snap
for an upward motion.
2) The flip must extend at least 1 foot into the air.
3) The coin must NOT hit anything in the air.
4) The coin has to land 'on the green', not in a pocket, not the floor, not the siderails.

I have made several players reflip for a legimate flip, and they sheepishly knew everytime they did not flip properly the first time.
