Frustrated

no offense taken, its good advice if we just wanted to rob people. But I am actually trying to excellerate my game and raise it to the next level every time I match up.

This I don't believe. You two are on the road trying to stay on the road. You're not looking to gamble. You're looking to make money.

I think some people play 10 dollar sets or sweat 25 and under perched on the rail because they just want a little sweat. Makes the game less boring while not really getting hurt. There is nothing wrong with this. 95 percent of pool players (prolly more) aren't trying to make a living out of gambling. They aren't trying to achieve what you are so they do things differently. I am always thankful when someone is willing to sweat a match regardless of how much they choose to put on it.

good post Dora. That's it in a nutshell. The folks with money (decent job) don't mind losing a few sets for $25, but there is not any reason to bet more because winning $200 or $500 or even $1000 is not life altering to them, so why even risk losing it :)

Everything costs more than $10 these days why do people waste their time playing $10 sets? There should be an unwritten rule that sets are no less than $25 and only if the races are short.:sorry:

If someone plays pool to make money, sure. If not, I'd play for $5, free, $20, $6.25 a set.

I waste my time a lot playing for nothing.

Your trying to make money matching up. That's a start but you need to learn to hustle. That takes deep pockets, skill and heart. Read Johnnyt's stories. He was the master of disguise and the hustle. I've known a few better then average road players. Not naming names but they all had a system. Your playing in tournaments correct? Are you cashing? If your not coming in close to last your not getting any side action afterword's. Even then you need to lose before you can win. The word needs to get around your a looser or a easy mark. Never steam roll a sucker. Rhetorical question, are you packing. Playing with a sneaky pete pool cue? A break stick with duck tape on it? A case also wrapped with duck tape? Can you hide your stroke? All tricks of the trade. If I'm in a strange place I keep my back to the wall and drink my beer, just a prop, out of the bottle. If I'm drinking water I cover it with a napkin and place a little piece of paper on it so I know it it's been tampered with. I've known to many players who were slipped a mickey. In the end your not going to get rich on the road IMHO. It may be the adventure of your life or it could be very a disappointing lesson. I wish you the very best.

This is whats wrong with pool. no wonder people think pool is a game where everyone is a hustler trying to rob them, because of this type of stuff is horrible everyone trying to squeeze every cent out of people and doing some sketchy stuff to do it. pool would be a better game with more players without this.

And what do you get?

Bony fingers.

What a sad life hustling pool has always been :frown:

I completely agree.

Expand your horizons a little...have you ever played 3 ball? Back when I gambled, on a good night I'd clear over $200 with only $2 antes. You can make an astonishing amount of money on nickel/dime wagers, you just have to have a system of how to work a room, and how to work a ring game. Ring games like 3 ball or even 9 ball ring games can put a lot of cash in your pocket with no hard feelings. You have to be ready to walk if the rotation/dump works against you. Don't look down you nose at $10 games, either, that's money in the bank that you can walk out with without blowing your cover. All this dickering over spots marks you one way or the other, which limits your take. You're busting your butt trying to get a spot in a $500 game with a player, while ignoring money on the floor with APA 3s that don't mind losing money in little bites. You end up losing the $500 in the "game", but you could pick up a different $500 working the fish. Try out sticking to barboxes only in one of your stops and work bars/nightclubs for pocket change; you can really clean up without ever being seen in a real pool room. I don't think I have to tell you, military towns and college towns are prime watering holes on the road for the small action...If it were me and I was still gambling, I'd make the big rooms the absolute last stop in my time in a town. It all adds up. ;)

Rhea,

What kind of spot can I get as a C player? I am not sure when you and Geno might be coming through the Denver area, but I don't mind gambling a little, as my job as a network engineer makes up monetarily for a lack of pool skills.

No one is holding a gun to anyone's head. Where did I say squeeze someone dry. Back in the day we had a man with 7 children. After a few beers they took his pay check every week. Not me. She wants more then $25 or more a set. I don't condone taking peoples money that can't afford to lose but the players with deep pockets well see a easy mark. What do you call them? I don't shark and don't hustle. Last time someone called me out after I won I gave him his money back and told him he needed it more then me. Didn't Rhea already set me straight?

Short Bus Russ. I used to play out of Zooster's and like action. I'll play sets starting at 25 or 50 race to 7. Loser has option to bump. Maybe next week at the love shack. They have free pool noon to 5. let me know. Sorry for the derail.

Keith,

I am just getting over food poisoning, so not feeling tht great, but give me another week or two, and perhaps we can play some...

Do you prefer 7 or 9 footers? I heard that The Wreck Room just upgraded to Diamond barboxes...

Perhaps the weather will be a bit better, too... :-)

I second college bars. Ask a bro to play for a few. They don't wanna look. Like a wimp in front of their buddies. I'm no Eddie felson but I find this approach to be the best. Somebody in there will see u win and call u out only to lead to another. If they question your success u just call drunk luck and leave. As for hustling it is the other guys fault for giving away their hard earned dough. I lost more money than I should have given out last time I gambled but I knew what I was getting into. Go for the big action because u have the ambition but always remember that the farm system is always there.
