Tips....
I had put one of Jeff's tips on one of my Joss cues that I was using as a break cue. I was flipping back and forth between the Joss with an OB Break shaft (with one of Jeff's tips on it) and a McDermott NG-05 with a phenolic tip.
I didn't like the weight or feeling of the Joss as a break cue. I really liked the feeling of the McDermott, but I couldn't get used to the phenolic tip. I toyed with just selling it. Then I got a "hair-brained" idea.
I put the McDermott shaft on my lathe and took all but 1/8 of an inch of the phenolic off (basically leaving a phenolic "pad" at the end of the ferrule). Then I installed one of Jeff's tips on top of the "pad".
I have to say I wasn't too sure about the hit...Jeff's tips can take a pounding, but it almost was too soft feeling for a break when I gave it more that 70% power. So, another "hair-brained" idea. I trimmed the top 1/2 of Jeff's tip off. Now, I've got the best of both worlds. With the phenolic backing and about 1.5mm of Jeff's tip, it gives me the "perfect" balance between the strength of the phenolic and the ability for me to control the cue ball spin with Jeff's tip...I've played 100's of racks with this setup and there has been ZERO mushrooming!!!
I still play with these on my shooting cues as well!
