Funny little story

Way back when I was about 20 years old and thought i could beat just about anybody I walked into this pool room down in NC (looked it up in the phone book, that's how it used to be done) So I walk in and ask the guy working if there was anyone around who might want to play some 9ball.He said well I might find ya a game, give me a couple minutes.I thought he was going to go call someone. He goes in the back room and comes out and says, yep found you a game.He didn't ask my name or anything.I should have known right then.Well a few minutes go by and out comes this guy who looks like he's been back in there sleeping. We flip the coin for about 30 or 40 a rack 9ball and I took the worst beatin of my pool life.
I didn't but should have asked who he was but back then I didn't care I just wanted to play. That's how we did it way back then.On top of not missing a ball for what seemed like hours he must have drank 24 beers while we were playing. So after i lost bout 400 and saw the light I find out who this guy is.Denny Searcy. Some of the best 9ball i have ever seen played to this day.The guy had the smoothest stroke and the best nerves i have ever seen.Took me months to get over that beatin,LOL John Brumback

Whats a Phonebook ?????? an 80's must have thing ? :)

Forest park

I got there the day after Denny busted the payball game. I couldn't believe someone could do that, with all the talent in the game. Imagine, being told by the top rated players in the Country, that you can't play in a ring game with them. That used to be one of the highlights of the weekend for me, watchin those guys play. There was a Canadian guy named Frank, played real good on that table too. Watched him play snooker against Danny D. and someone else. He was playing as his own partner against them, playing with 6 red balls, and giving them a spot. Also watched Grady and Freddie gambling at one pocket. Man, I really miss those days.

LOL thanks Jay.Good story about him too! I was at forest park billiards in Dayton,Oh when they flew him in and he busted that BIG pay ball game on the snooker table. That was awesome to watch. You were probably there too.
PS: I would have bet on Denny S. John B.

I remember one time when I was young,,,not old enough to drink.

I walked into a pool room,,walked up to small group of people,,,of which,,one was the owner,,,the others were the best players from the area and were always in the pool hall.
I interrupted the old buggers,,,and said ,,,anyone want to play a race for $100?? LOL

I was barely out of high school. lol They were so caught off guard by this,,,,,I remember them all stepping back with a confused look on their faces,,,,,then almost as if they wanted to start busting out laughing,,,but held it back.
I recall them just staring at me ,,,,speechless!! lol

Finally one guy cleared his throat and asked what I had in mind,, as we walked to a table.

Yep,,,he beat me badly,,,,I think he gave me some shots just so I would feel better about losing. I wasn't very good then,,but just good enough to think(in my mind) i could beat one of them.

Although most of them are passed away now,,I did see them over the years after,as I got better at shooting pool. And they though it was funny to remind me of this move I pulled .

One of the guys in the group was Harry Sexton. lol Anyone remember him???

Sadly, Denny S became an alcoholic and drank himself to death. Also, I've seen him so drunk he couldn't beat a banger.

Not to knock Denny, because he was a much loved player and person. However, alcohol eventually ruined his game and his health.

RIP

And can someone please explain the "You owe me one right?" line while playing nine ball?

In the old ddays Pool was played mostly by the game. There was lots of $10-$20-$30 and so on ( ball played. Lot's of ring games too. If womeone put an 8 pack on you for say $30 a game, wellit tested what you ere toting in your chest and quickly.
Some were always slow about squaring up after the game and hoping teh other would snooze the payoff. So you had to be carful and get paid bdfore breaking the balls. Thusly the, "you owe one, right" was used and a lot.
i miss those days. It ws fun to watch. You could tell quickly waht a guy ws holding and what you were shooting at.
These days around here, races to 5 or 7 for $20-$30 is gambling.

Craig Stevens probably played more $30 ball than any living human.

Did you know Larry York from Indy? We were pretty good friends, and he was telling me about playing in the payball game once. He had some extra dough, and played real good on the snooker table, so thought he would play. He said he came out a little ahead. Larry was a great player, and just quit out of the blue.
