What’s the slot size on those?

Our Border Collies are smart as heck but neither of them can quite master the “No Shed” command.

Nice looking pups! I used to own horses and a few cows and knew people with working Border Collies. Smart dogs indeed!

The chows are often impressively smart but they also have the hearing of a teenager! I would tell mine to do something he didn't want to do and he would try to ignore me. Then he would finally get up moving very slowly and stiffly. He would walk only using hip and shoulder joints with all four legs rigid. He looked like some of the old wind up toys. "OK, I will do it but I really really don't want to!"

I have seen the chows make the lists of stupid dogs sometimes but the list makers generally acknowledged that there was a question of how much was intelligence issues and how much was just plain stubbornness.

VERY stubborn! Mine was. They require a dedicated owner with patience, and they need a lot of love.

herding dogs can be hit and miss when it comes to stubborness and strong instincts. got this little beast to contend with every other weekend at my parents farm:

to rough on sheep, intended for bovine in the swiss mountains. this one got all the herding instincts but has no cows to herd, resulting in mom and dad getting their fair share of ankle grabs when walking too far apart

My favorite stock dogs aren't really herders, they are catch dogs. A friend had one went close to a hundred pounds. Looked like a pit bull only bigger, an Old English Bulldog, not to be confused with the cool squatty body things. My friend had a dairy farm and had recently bought a cow that got contrary with the barn in sight. She headed off at a trot and he put the dog on her. He grabbed her in the nostrils and ducked under her. She cut a flip so hard the ground shook! She got up and took off for a second try. Same result. Third time she headed for the barn and just swung her head before she decided she had all the fun she wanted for one morning. Most amazing thing, there wasn't a mark on her nose. I would have thought it had to be badly damaged. I had the hot running wants for that dog, no need though.

'Nudder dog story, I bought horse hay from a farmer. They had the finest looking dog I ever saw, looked like a waist high pit bull. An accidental crossing of one of the low slung old english bull dogs and a great dane.

A friend, his wife, and his son were getting hay one day. His wife Linda was only about 100 pounds and maybe five feet four. The dog thought it was the funniest thing in the world to rear up, put his paws on her shoulders and gently push her down. He did this three or four times before they got the hay loaded. When they were ready to go he did it again but this time he picked her up clear of the ground grabbing her by the belt. He carried her into a corner of the barn and then sat down facing away from her. He growled when her husband or son came to get her, "You can't have my new playmate!" They had to drive up to the house and get the owner to get Linda back from the pup, still a long ways from grown. I suspect he grew up to weigh 125-150 without being fat.
