Did anybody not know that? It is also the name of the metal band between the bristles of a brush and the handle, the metal band on either end of a decent chisel, the crimped-on ends for wires, etc.. Technically even the aglets on your shoe strings are ferrules.

Ferrule comes from the Latin word for iron….it used to secure arrow and spear heads to the shaft.
