Did anybody not know that? It is also the name of the metal band between the bristles of a brush and the handle, the metal band on either end of a decent chisel, the crimped-on ends for wires, etc.. Technically even the aglets on your shoe strings are ferrules.
And boy have these been used with a bridge and practice strokes a lot in school
Not surprising, considering that it's between the bumper and the butt on the wrong end of the pencil.
