Not really "funny" per say but pretty impressive....a guy did a prop bet on 2+2 for a decent chunk of money that he could take off and land a Cessna with no live experience, only simulator on his computer.

First link is the thread to the propbet

2nd link is to the youtube clip.

"Pilot has zero hours flight instruction, and has never been in a private plane. His only training is on a desktop flight simulator. Instructor has 18,000 hours of flight time and is a CFI and"

The only thing you can't learn on a desktop flight simulator is the sphincter-clenching fear you experience the first time your plane stalls (loses lift and falls from the sky.) When a Cessna stalls, it drops approximate 500 feet before it's moving fast enough to gain lift again. If you were coming in for landing and below 500 ft, a stall (which happens when you're airspeed is low* such as when you're... I don't know... landing) will kill you.

The experience worked though. After I solo'd I almost stalled my plane on approach but realized it soon enough (the controls get mushy) and guess what... I lived. :)

Incidentally, the other thing the desktop simulator doesn't do is allow you to experience the sheer joy of flying a goddam airplane! I never got my license (lost my job and never went back to it) but if the FAA allowed desktop simulator hours to count towards training, I would still choose to pony-up the money and fly.

Can't forget slips...

The pilots first attempt was pretty impressive.

We were up one day, I asked the instructor what happens if we lose the engine. He said nothing, and powered the engine down to idle.

You go into a slight nose down attitude and go into glide mode. You would be looking for a safe place to land and as long as you don't try and gain altitude, you will be relatively safe.

Click on the link. Cessna 172 practicing stalls and recovery. Now thats a little scarier when the stall horn goes off. It usually doesn't take that long before the engine picks up power again. What you would prefer not to do is allow the plane to go into a cork screw descent. Those are hard to recover from, if you let them go too far. Crop dusters often get themselves into trouble pulling off turns close to the ground. Stunt pilots are much better at it.

A spin recovery. Who needs rides at the fair.

Now I could use some Buds like that.

Crazy Aussies. I might have been more afraid of running into a King Brown in the crawl space than anything. I guess they are used to them.
