Funny pic/gif thread...

A 15% grade means for every 100' of horizontal, the grade rises or falls vertical 15'.

You lost me with the fractions.

For contrast, the steepest paved road in Colorado is 9%.

Thanks - that’s what I thought: 15/100 = 15%.
You lost me with the fractions.
Just another way to say percentages:
1/7 (1’ vertical per ~7’ horizontal) = 14%
1/6 (1’ vertical per ~6’ horizontal) = 16%
1/4 (1’ vertical per 4’ horizontal) = 25%
For contrast, the steepest paved road in Colorado is 9%.
1’ vertical per ~11’ horizontal (1/11 grade).

Hilarious, right?

I'm sure there's a steeper one in some mountain town. I think the steepest I've seen on a freeway is 6%.

I've definitely ridden up paved stuff in CO that approached 20%.

I'm going off of CDOT data. Close enough for government work.

I'm sure there are some streets in old mining towns steeper.

20% on a bike? Crazy! I hope you took the chairlift up. :ROFLMAO:

Interesting about Colorado, would have though there would be steeper.

Some grades have names, originating with the earliest railroads in England (there were none earlier).

The Great Western Main Line (GWML) is a main line railway in England that runs westwards from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads. It connects to other main lines such as those from Reading to Penzance and Swindon to Swansea.[2] Opened in 1841, .....

The alignment was so level and straight it was nicknamed "Brunel's billiard table".

It's slope is 0.07575% and named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

For reference, this is about a 33% (10/30 or 1/3) grade.
