Ga-Young Kim

Siming Chen is gonna be getting there soon .. She still yôung but was traveling with GYK for a while and it shows that se learned a lot from her

GYK introduced me to her at Tunica when she was helping Simeng with USA Travel. I already knew she had been ranked #1 but against GYK she was 0-2 in the matches i witnessed.

BTW-GYK lost her first 10 matches or so vs Allison. It was a rough start but Allison always got a hug. Since she broke through, I think GYK has an increasing edge over her in wins. All JMHO

Different eras, but I think it's a bit much to say one can't mention GYK with Allison. Allison dominated the first half of her reign virtually unopposed; then it was a 2 woman show for the last few years. GYK, among the first of the "new wave" of Asian women pros, is holding her own and improving her game.

I remember thinking Okay, here's evidence that the girls can play with the boys...only after watching GYK's game for the first time. Her break is phenomenal (less important now with template racks but still handy), her kicking game is in a league of its own among the women, and her safe game is also up there.

Btw, tho Ga Young is Korean, she trained/turned pro in Taiwan, and dominated the local tour for awhile. I'm not sure where she's based now, maybe Nostroke can tell us.

She's back in S Korea several years now. Incheon-very close to Seoul or maybe even considered in the 'Greater Seoul' area.

Lot of delusion in this thread. Though often in the conversation and at times the arguable best, Ga Young has never been the clear best player in the world among the women.

When Allison and Karen stopped dominating, perhaps about 2007, Ga Young was comparable, but not superior to, Jasmin Ouchan and Kelly Fisher. From 2008-12, I'd say Ga Young and Kelly Fisher were equals, and in more recent times, Ga Young, Han Yu, and Siming Chen are roughly equals.

At no point has Ga Young dominated her sport, and her game has never been even nearly comparable to the top men of her era. Allison rarely competed against the men, but Jean Balukas competed with some success against the professional male players of her day, owning match victories over probably thirty different male HOFers. Karen Corr has several Joss tour titles and has pro match wins over many of the greatest male players of her era. Ga Young has a long way to go to be in the conversation with the likes of Allison, Karen, and Jean. Perhaps she'll get there. She's a legend of the game, but she'll have to do more to convince this avid 40-year follower of women's pro pool that she's worhty of comparison with the all-time greats.

Right.

Do you actually know anything about pool, or do you just list stats/titles/names in post after post?

Look at Allison's competition when she first came over here. You listed quite a few HOF'ers, and not taking anything away from those ladies, who among them can hang with the top tier female pro of the modern era? Who even comes close? The reason you won't be seeing an Allison-style domination by GYK or other top players today is precisely because they're ALL playing at a much higher level than what "pro speed" was in the U.S. 20 years ago. It's not even close.

There's no comparable gap in men's pool; top players from the 90's can and do compete with the fresh crop of pros today. But the gap in women's pool from 20, 25 years ago is fk'n HUGE. If you don't recognize that (and how that's relevant to this conversation), I'm not sure if 40 years of professional pool-gazing has done you much good.

Thanks for the info. I used to shoot out of the same poolhall in Taipei GYK trained in. A lot of monsters came through that room, but unfortunately none of their skill rubbed off on me, lol.

Technically, Chen Si Ming is bit better than Ga Young
But her mental game is not as good as GYK, has choked few times when it matters And failed to win any big ones W9B, W10B yet
Si among also has strong H2H record against many players though those against Alison and Karen are when they were off their peak years http://forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=5308866&postcount=49

Alison is best in her era and may be best ever. But like the men's game , there are much more top elite players now than previous eras so it is not as easy for GYK to dominate
GYK is not exactly young 32 now so time is against her side to elipse Alison
The one who has best chance of elipsing Alison is Si Ming. Yes she has not won a World Championship it is matter of time and she has time and scary thing is she keeps getting better. When she wins first WC and floodgates open , it will come in droves :D

Gotcha. 40 years wasted, I guess. Thank you for sharing your obviously world class intellect with someone so intellectually challenged as me.

Moving to be near the right pool room is key when you wanna play.
