Gambling and Backers!

First off, I am not a big time gambler and I don't pretend to be. I have read countless threads about playing for big money. Some people have backers for money and some people claim to play on there own money.
The thing I would like to point out is: if you do use a backer for big money matches and win, well the split is usually 50/50 or maybe somewhere close to 60/40. This depends on arrangements, spending, etc. The player has nothing to lose, except his backer if he or she loses too much.
Anyway, if you have a backer for matches, it's usually because the player has little to no money. After all what world class players have 9-5 jobs? If your backer puts you into a game playing for 10k this week and you win, odds are you will have another match.
My main question: do these big money backers really care if the player finds his or her lil action for say 500-1000? Or would these backers demand their cut if their horse wins any matches at all? Just curious...........;)

I can't wait to read the responses to this thread!

Just like any other business deal the arrangements need to be clear and upfront. Far too many people leave things unsaid and then there are issues.
People are different so some players/backers have different views. Some players liked being staked even if they have cash. Some backers are leary of staking certain games etc.

Usually the backer is staking a player just in one particular game however there are exception. Some backers will front a plyer $$$ and then the player goes on the road or to an event. Everything that the player does then is being staked. Major trust by the backer here.

The lines need to be clear if a backer is planning on staking a player for a while night or weekend. Does the chop happen after each game or after the allotted timeframe. That needs to be crystal clear.
I once staked a guy for a couple days at a tourney. I told him clearly that I would cover the action and then we would split at the end. I covered his expenses and tourney entry as well.
After the weekend he had won$400 in the tourney and overall we were up
$1200 after expenses. I cut the money 50/50 and he got real upset and
said that I owed him close to $2000. He said expenses came out of my end and that each gambling session was seperate.
I was pretty pissed because everything was discussed VERY clearly. He went on and on about it. That was my last dealings with him. Even other people there were telling him he was an idiot.

Other times I have been thrown a bone. I staked a guy for $400 once and had to leave the room for work. When I came back about 12 hours later he came up and gave me my $400 plus another $700. I asked him about it. He said he got some easy action and appreciated me staking him in the tougher game. That happens about as often as Haleys Comet.
Good guy though and esay to stake. Never any issues he just could not afford to put up his own cash. RIP Mike Johnson - you were a good friend.

I never felt obligated to a stake horse. They are just as likely to bet on you as to bet against you. On the other hand, I always shared the wealth with my running partners, guys who could win money, also. But I can also probably count the number of times I have been 100% staked on two hands. I usually had greater than 50% of my own action.

On another note, every time I hear someone say that the player has nothing to lose when getting staked, it always bothers me a little. I mean, I get what you're saying, but at the same time I don't. Does noone believe there is an opportunity cost at stake here for the player(s) involved? Once that money is in the middle, that money is just as much mine as it is my opponent's. It's just who crosses the finish line first.

Every stakehorse an player has a different relationship. I knew I guy in TN that won 5k staking a player. They split 50/50 and then he did everything he could do to get the 2500 back from the player. he told me that the player was stupid with his money once he got it and he would make a bad game. Sure enough the kid got a game and the backer was on the other side. They won about 1k of it back.
Thats just not my style

As for the risk.. If theirs 5k in the middle and you lose how much has the player lost and how much has the backer lost?? Backer out the $$$$. Player out an opportunity

It's just business. Most backers are in it for the excitement and to make money. This depends on the situation. Here are some examples of splits I have made:

1. I bet with a player who told me we were stealing, proceeded to slaughter the guy. I risked $300, I won $900, I gave him $300 even though he won $2100 betting his own.

2. I side bet on a player that didn't know it. It was risky. The player played well. THe player won money for his match. I won $150 on the side, I bought him a few rounds.

3. Player is broke. I staked him for $10/game (all action we could get). We won $250. I took $50 gas money and let him keep $200. I've done this often.

4. I meet a new player. I set up a game. I stake all of it. We win $1300. I took $900 he got $400. If it hadn't been for me he couldn't have even gotten the game.

5. I travel with a player and pay all expenses. I stake every bet we make no matter how little or how easy. After expenses, we split 50/50.

If any player falls into category 1 or 3 and doesn't allow me to get in on an easy match later, I will never deal with them again. The main reason I do things like this is to help pool players without actually giving a handout. It also pays me back when they call me to stake (for 50/50) easy action.

If you are gonna be a backer you need to be pretty smart. I don't even want to try and use a damn backer anymore myself unless they got more gamble than a heroin addict sharing needles with a whore in Africa.
