How do I go about getting people to gamble with me? I'm a strong skill level 4 in my APA league and have a hard time getting people my own skill level to play cheap. Races to 5 for $10 or $20 sounds good to me but I can't get people to play. My approach may need some work or something.

Do you need to gamble?Maybe playing tournaments first would be a good idea and also getting your speed up before you go out to battle.I know that when i want to play for alittle something i never come out with it,just ask to hit some around and if you both are fairly even then ask to play for time, drink,or money, try to make it friendly and not a priority. ;)

Just ask them if they would like to play some cheap sets. If they say no, start calling them names and tell them they are a nit. :p If you are trying to play other APA 4's, that may be the problem. I don't think you will find many low rated players that will gamble. Also, you said you were a strong 4 and they might know that too, and not want to play you even.

I agree. In my experience very few players at this level want to gamble, and comparatively few APA players at any level want to gamble.

If you want to find players your own speed you might need to go to bars where the regulars play pool and play for drinks.

On the other hand, you can probably play the stronger players in your local place and get some weight. Don't expect to get enough weight to make a truly fair game, though. It's rare to find someone who is willing to play for small stakes and make a fair game. If you keep playing the same guy again and again you will eventually adjust to the right spot.

I'm glad to hear from someone at that skill level with some heart! Good luck to you.

Efren, is that you? Very funny. Noone still believes you're a 4 in the APA, Caesar.

Seriously -

You figure out a way to get an s/l 4 to put cash on the table playing even and you can post your methods. I think there are about 4,000 registered members here who would love to know how.

Has a lot to do with your apperance and your personality, but either way just ask.

And don't be afraid to gamble someone who plays better than you. You're playing $20 sets, I doubt you're going to go broke, get in there with someone who's better than you and just try, who cares if you lose a few?

Also, quit league, imo :)

Play for a dollar a game.

Or if they win, they get $2. If you win, you get $1, etc.

Play for a drink (This does not work for me as I drink soda pop and the other guy is drinking a $5 drink. Find out WHAT they are drinking first!)

In all my years of playing leagues, I can't remember but a few people that liked to gamble for anything over a beer. Just keep asking around, you'll find someone that plays your speed, that likes to gamble some. I think that for most, league night is more about the fun and getting together with people that share a common interest.

If other APA 4's don't want to play you even tell them you'll give them 1 on the wire in a $5 or $10 set. If they still don't want to bite they don't gamble or you have been sandbaging like hell and everyone knows it. Johnnyt

A lot of low skill and/or new players don't really understand the significance of weight. So you can try offering it, but it may not get you anywhere.

As a few people have said, you're much better off playing higher skilled players for a few reasons. They're more likely to gamble, you may be able to talk yourself into lots of weight if they're cocky, and you'll learn a lot more playing them than a equal or lower skill.

I'm not much of a player, but I was recently offered the 6-out on two different occasions by two different A players.

You bet your ass I jumped at that chance and I won both sets pretty easily.

It's all in the approach. Think of it like seducing a woman...:p

Instead of asking 1 person to play, as 2,3,or 4 guys if they want to play a ring game of 9 or 10 ball for 2 or 5, something like that, some people may not want to play one on one, but would jump into a ring game. That could get you started, then the next time you see one of them, ask if they want to play some more.

This is my 1000th post:

You gotta crawl before you can walk. I don't know many toddlers offering to footrace their playpen buddies.

You will either have to play better players and ask for weight, or play bangers for drinks as stated previously, because honestly, if they could gamble, they wouldn't be SL4's.

Posting here was the first step though. I will give you action. Where would you like to meet up?

I agree that's the best way to gain a few bucks. We do it after leagues.

Don't listen! This man is CRAZY. Take my word for it Gambling is AWSOME. It's just behind sex & drinking. Btw- all three is a good night, I call this Saturday. Not to be confused with Wednesday and Friday which is just drinking & gamling, or Tuesday and Thursday which is just drinking & sex.:D

Uh, I am a, uh, 3. Yeah, that's the ticket. A 3. I have never run more than two consecutive balls. I once played so bad, people got bored beating me out of my money. Yeah, a 3. I'll try one or two sets.

Great advice. If you compare all that you'll lose compared to all that you'll win, plus the time hunting games, plus all the risks involved, plus consider how addictive it can grow to be, just practice a lot against The Ghost.

If you up your skill level and spend time around other better players and you still want to make a go of it, by then you will be much more ready than you are right now. If you can keep your gambling at pool under control so it doesn't control you, then best of luck to you as you begin your journey!
