Gambling verses League Players

Wow, heavy.
Somebody always pays for the life of a gambler.
Either the gambler themselves, or if not , their family.
And not just by being poor and doing without.
Even the few guys who are smart enough to make a decent amount of money,and hold onto it.
Pass on bad karma for their family.
I'm sure you know that also.
The kids think ,oh I'll just do what dad did , but they never can.
It is usually to their ruin.
I know some that do both.. Maybe not to the extent of some stories you have told but I know of a few that went for a thousand or so ... Most however are 5.00-10.00 a rack 9 ball..
Was playing league one night and the opposing captain threw a player but nobody could find him. It turns out the guy was playing 20.00 a rack 9 ball on the 9 footers so he had to throw some one else..
Most play even up but granted they try to match close to handicaps but I did see an 8 take a few hundred off of a 6 one night playing 9 ball even race to 7.
Now none of these guys are die hard gamblers but will pull out a few dollars from time to time .
I love the time near the end of the night we have friends that play scotch doubles Reese to three for $20 a person and it’s very fun I enjoy it I don’t consider that really gambling I consider that just put yourself under a little pressure to have fun in by each other drinks but if someone walked up to me and said hey kid do you want to play a race to five for $100 I would say no thank you I have been known to walk up to big players when they come to local tournaments and play them a set just for the experience to play with a world-class player but every once in a while is not bad I do not do this all the time

I really HATE having to go to the pool room at a specific time or day.
Aside from the fact that it is indoors and not really impacted by weather, it being available on my terms is one of the most appealing factors of pool.
No league play for me.

Besides the PETTY politics they want you to play anywhere from 16-32 weeks. Seriously??? Not happening. Played league years ago and MORE than got my fill of it. My take, nothing else. Its fun for some and that's cool.

Leagues can be a cheap way for some people to play somewhat competitive pool, with virtually no cost. Some guys never gamble, because they don't have the money to gamble. Two of the guys on one of my 5 man teams just drink a soda or two during leagues. Our team will take first place, so they will make money on the deal. They enjoy the camaraderie and being on a strong team. If the rules are decent, I don't mind leagues. It's something to do. But I almost never turn down someone around my skill level to play for money either. If I happen to lose, I consider it cheap entertainment.
That's a very general statement and an extremely ignorant one as well.
I gamble on pool matches and my home and family life is fantastic. I'm absolutely in love with my wife that I have been married to for 15 years and beyond grateful for the children we have together.
Before you make any further assumptions. She is well aware I gamble at pool and other things from time to time and I tell her about my wins and losses. I don't hide anything from her and because of that, it is reciprocated.
We are both successful in our careers and pool in no way will ever pay the bills or cause a bill not to be paid.
Sure, some people cannot control themselves, but you can't generalize them with everyone else. It's like calling the person who has a few beers a week an alcoholic. Just because he likes a beer from time to time doesn't mean he is going to blow his savings on booze and need a liver transplant.

I quit leagues about 6 months after my kids were born for multiple reasons, but this one the main one. Been out of league for almost 8 years now and although I can hold more of a normal schedule again, I'm not going back to league. My skill levels were already maxed in both 9ball and 8ball when I quit. Even with that, I still wasnt the best player in the league, but because of how league works, it was a rare occasion that I got to match up with those guys in the league match. Maybe twice per session our teams would meet, and if I was lucky I was able to play them that night. So out of the session, it was probably once or twice I was able to play the upper level guys.
Going to the poolhall and matching up on my own schedule allows me to do this much more frequently and get an even game out of them. After a year of being off league, I feel my game jumped considerably and has still been getting better.
I get to the poolhall twice a week still and match up here and there on my own schedule. Most of the time it is the same nights, but if I miss a night due to other things I will pick it up another night. I hit balls at home on the in between time to make a poor attempt at staying in gear.
