Different skill sets are required for different games. Which game is most effective in teaching skills used in the average league / tournament arena ? Would you say 14:1 teaches primarily pattern play and combination skills ? How about one pocket ? Does its most importantly teach cue ball control and banking skills ? No one plays much 3-cushion around here anymore, but I remember oh so well the lessons learned would come into play in almost every other game. So which is it ? What game teaches you more overall ?

The game that they are playing in the league/ tournament.

If I were only playing one game to improve my overall skillz, it would be 14.1. Honorable mention to 1 Pocket.

League strategy

For league play have them learn how to play chess.

then:
1.) The game that is played in league.
2.) Staight pool.
3.) Carom pool: at least that is what I call it. Great for new players to teach them tangent lines. What you do is rack an 8 ball rack. Break it open. Then shoot any ball off the cue ball into a called pocket. Play to the balls are cleared and/or set number made. Have fun with that one.
