I'm still on the hunt for a table.

After hearing my story about the deal that fell though, one of my local pool hall owners offered me one of the Gandy 9 footers in his room for a grand.

I quick google earch and the price seems fair. But I know nothing about the brand whatsoever.I know its been recently recovered with 860 and it plays fine.I'm headed back over there in about an hour to really inspect it.

What should look for?Whats the difference between a "Big G" and any other 9'Gandy?(if any)

How is the brand overall?

Hows the price if the inspection checks out ok?

Any information/opinions would be great.

In my search for a table, the Gandy's that I came across were in the $800 to $1500 range. Of course it all depends on condition.

I did own a Macon Billiard's Table a while back and it was a copy of an earlier Gandy (or so I was told). It was a very solid table, I loved it!!

Good luck with the table!!

You will be much happier with a used Gold Crown. Put the word out and you will find one. Let "pooltablemech" and "MexPoolplyr" know you are looking.

The Gandy Big G's were a good solid table, but a notch or two under a Gold Crown all the way around. Better than a home table let's just say. Used they should be worth 500 to a thousand tops.

Every Big G I played on played like a big barbox.
Ball bounced funny, third rail the ball went backwards, pocket openenings were wide but spat balls out and some had warped rails from the infamous Atlanta flooded wood stock by Gandy.

My opinion

I agree with most of what has been posted so far. The Gandy Big G will be a decent table but, save your money and hold out for a Gold Crown or a Diamond. Do it right the first time around you won't be sorry if you do it right from the beginning.

Looks like everybody beat me to the punch. I would definitely rather spend a grand on a GC and you can find them for that much on eBay. Some guy recently have about 12 for sale for $750....they were GCI's.

I like the Gandy Big G and Hustler tables,No they are no Gold Crown ,yes they do sometimes have problems with the rails and cushions but if they are taken care of and the price is right they are not a bad table to own.

They should have built them using better hardware ,alot of the problems that people have with them are a result of the rail and apron hardware being overtightned . and a sometimes low cushion height.

I picked up a 8ft pro Hustler table for $300 a few months back, the aprons need to be replaced and of course several of the bolts and rail plates are stripped but they are easy enuff for me to fix. It does have Mahagony rails(under the laminate) mahagony 2 in frame and mahagony for a slate liner and doweled slate so once it is fixed correctly it should be a pretty nice table.

Purdman has the nicest one I've seen and it plays as good as any table I've ever played on.

Big G's

I have 5 Big G's and am setting 4 of them up in a room with GC III's. If they are put together properly they play fine. We had quite a few in Vegas years ago, they were sold out of the old Stardust tourneys. Most players still prefer the Gold Crowns 'just because they are Gold Crowns".
The only complaint I ever had to the Gandys were .. they should have been built heavier. Most "off brand" tables other than GC's play quite well > if care is taken when installing them.

Gandy tables suck... every single one that I have played on... They aren't sturdy, if you go to get down on the ball fast and your body bumps into the table you'll see all the balls shake -- that happens with me and I don't weigh more than 150lbs.

I've seen them with good cloth, and bad cloth, and they all suck... get a GC or a Diamond, just save up a little bit more.

Try and find a GC locally. Shipping from out of town or state will kill you, plus you don't get to see it. Put an ad in the biggest news paper in your area that has used pool tables for sale. You will get plenty of calls for them. There are a lot of people that have tables in their basements they no longer use. Kids went to college, moved out to get married, divorce, behind in their bills, moving to smaller place, health isues...the list goes on and on. I never had a problem finding a good deal on a pool table locally for myself or friends anywhere I have lived. To buy a table site on seen is asking for problems. Johnnyt

My .02

I have owned a Gandy Big "G" since 1999. It was well taken care of and plays as good as any table out there. Mechanic/player and I put new cloth on it a few months ago. I can honestly say that there is not a rentable table out in my area that plays any better. I wouldn't come on here and slam any Gold Crowns or Diamonds. They play very well. Anybody who knocks a Gandy Big "G" doesn't have a clue what a decent table plays like. JMHO
Purdman

Hey Thunderball I have a friend with a Gandy 9 footer in his house about ten minutes from you named Niel, he plays league at Breakers. Niels Gandy is older table and looks and plays great, I have a 9 foot Diamond Pro at home and as long as there level and have simonis they play about equal.

once upon a time over 20 years ago a pool room i used to go to had Gandys that were set up right and they played good....not as good as gold Crowns but good......anyways they moved down the street and took the tables with them they didnt get set up right after the move the rails were low and when any OB hit a rail hard it would jump up about 1" and bounce off at a funny angle it was impossible to play a bank shot on them-they were junk after that but when they were first set up in the other room they were ok

buy a used GC its worth the $$$ and time hell Jay just got one cheap and they prices are soft on them now
