Gandy Big G vs Diamond

And I have a friend with a Gandy Big G that plays perfectly.

Last night, Chicago weather was pretty nice. We don't have a bar or anything. We did $130 in pooltime during a 14 hour day. At $11/hour/table.
I enjoy playing on the gandy, but idk. he pushes mcdermott hard, but we sell more pechauers than brand-name mcdermotts. last night i sold a kid a viper -.-

your boss has smoked to many cig-a-weeds.

If you get a Gandy instead of a good used GC or Diamond you might as well smoke some with your boss

which table wins? Lately I've been hearing from certain people that Diamond's just a fad (which i think is likely false, i like the way they play), and that Gandy was the preferred table over Gold Crowns. Give me your thoughts please!

Hmm... you'd never hear a woman say that...

D'oh! :D

I think the heat in my school is getting to me. It's gotta be 95 degrees in here, no air flow. No AC till April. Apparently the entire 6 building campus has one air conditioning tower.
But good call. Thankfully, I'm no woman and I'll take what I can get :P

I'd venture to say you can find a used GC for between 800 and 1200 easily these days. A Gandy ..... I wouldn't pay more than 600 or 700, but really, besides canyon pockets, you could make worse choice.

As far as I know, Gandy tables have framed slate and real hardwood poplar rails. Lots of cheapo 9 foot tables out there don't have either.

But, I wouldn't give up without really looking for a used GC.

Couldn't I always just shim the pockets?

"Shimming" the rails is not the way to go. Rather, extending the rails/cushions deeper into the pockets is.

I'm sure RKC can show you examples of the differences.

Bomb Squad:

Glen (realkingcobra) is a pretty busy guy and may not respond for a bit. So you might want to use the "Search" in the navigation bar above, to search for all threads created by "realkingcobra" -- specifically ones that show a "paper clip" icon (which mean attached photos. You'll be able to see some pics of work he'd done where the rails/cushions were extended into the pockets.

Hope that helps!

Oh, I know it, I'm just bustin chops because I'm bored and overheating... :P

I almost paid 1200 for a used Big G until I went and shot on it. I now own a GC1 and dont regret the extra $ i paid for new subrails, rubber and stain - never shot on a Diamond so cant comment, I live on the east coast - good luck finding one.

Yes, it's true, I can take a Gandy Big G and make it play lights out, but the drawback is the Gandy slates. The slate shelf is so shallow, that when you tighten the pockets to 4 1/2" there's no room for a ball to sit in the jaws of the pocket...because the slate shelf is cut so far out that the balls don't have anywhere to sit...so they fall in the pockets:D they're actually about as shallow as a Valley bar box...which explains why people liked playing on them when Gandy was in business over 20 years ago building them....EVERYONE looked good playing on a Gandy Big G...

Your boss doesnt sound to bright. Ive never in my life heard anyone say a gandy was better than a brunswick. Much less a diamond.

th(is/ese) person(s) claims to have had a gold crown in his house and then learned about gandy. and no, they're out of business as far as commercial product, but i hear American Heirloom is their new brand.
And I lol'd at this:"Nobody wants a one piece slate, they're good to play on, but nobody wants to ****in move em! What if you move or sell your house?"
There are some very good condition Big G's 9' for $2400 installed.

Gandy closed down a long time ago;)

Gandy

All gandy tables use the same rails and the only big difference was the leg structure.

It has been years since I bought a dozen or so of them. From Roy gandy and his son Kim in Macon, Georgia. It was summer of 1970.

They had the Sportsman model, a mid line model, and the Big G.

I liked working on the gandy tables because I could finish a reckon job in 'under an hour'!

I did not like the corner casting set-ups - they were aluminum and the aprons were just 1x8 or so.

The big thing was all of the lumber used in the frame was Phillipine Mahagony - it was VERY soft and the staples would just fly out when doing a recover. I can remember that the rail anchors were small plates with 4 wood screws and they always stripped out because the rail body was also the soft mahagony. Cannot remember how the staple wood was - but I don't believe it was poplar.

That is what I remember from 42 years ago. And the pockets were buckets, and the corner castings also attached 'oddly' to the rails. BTW - when I bought those tables, I paid $460 per table (for the Sportsman) without cloth and balls. Big G was $100 more.
