Gandy Pool tables any good?

I am moving to Virginia near Newport News and if I can find a place that I can have a pool table inside the house and not disturb anyone with the noise I will buy me a used table. I saw this table that is a few hours away. I think I remember playing on a Gandy table years ago and they seemed fine. I'll probably offer $800 or $900 and see what happens, I know I have to pay for shipping and set up too, I'm guessing that's $450-$500 since it is pretty far from me.

plays kinda like an AMF table and some gandy's play like olhausens. If the guy will take what you offer I think you should definitely get the table

Like any table, it depends on who is going to set it up. There are a couple of table mechanics posting on AZ who will do an incredible job on any brand of table. On the other hand, I've played on many top brand tables I would never play on again because of poor set up. Invest your money wisely!

I Am not a big fan of Gandy's tables.


I will tell you this much, originally the room i play in had about 30 of them and within the course of a year 27 of them were replaced with GCIII's.

Not one player that walked through the doors liked those gandy's and we had all levels of players walk through those doors at point in time.


Maybe, they are correct in who sets them up. but the gandy's that were installed there, were installed by the best table mechanic in the Tri-State area.

Yeah definitely not a fan. There's a room out here in Newport News that has mostly Gandys and they are not fun. Inconsistent rails, big pockets, and uneven rolling (will roll to the left on one half of the table and then straighten out and sometimes start rolling right on the other half) is all I've gotten from them. I'm sure they could be set up properly to prevent a lot of this but I'm betting it would take a LOT of work.
 
Thanks for the replies. I'll keep my eye out for a used Gold Crown. I don't want to pay the dough for something like a Diamond table. I would only keep the table about 3 years. If I don't find anything I like, I'll make a drive to his house and play on it first.
 
A great table can play like crap if it isn't set up properly.
A good table mechanic can make most tables play pretty darn good.

In the middle of a match a player stood up and said"I just figured out
what the Big G stands for,GARBAGE!!"
 
Gandy Table are good imo, Ive been shooting out of a pool hall here locally for 10+yrs and they have 14 gandys, they play fine, and are built Strong....

JJ's Billiards in Fredericksburg replaced their gandys a few years ago with gold crowns. That looks like one of them. The rails play like they are too low. Very fast and bouncy and prone to hopping. I'd guess that could be helped by putting something under the rails to raise them slightly, which would be very simple to do. Anybody tried that with a Gandy? The pockets play a little differently than a GC too.
 
Save your money, be patient and wait for a good deal on a Brunswick or Daimond. You will be seeing them after some tournaments. There was even a post not long ago where there were Diamonds and the light for $2500.

It will be worth the wait.
 
Gandy Big G

I have had two Gandy Big G tables. Both 9 footers. Both used. First one was a stock table. Played very fast due to the low rails. Second one was set up using Brunswick rubber, extended rails, 4.5" pockets with Simonis 860.

It was rebuilt by Mark Gregory of Perfect Pockets and plays as well as any table out there including Diamonds and GC any Number. In most cases, it is not so much the table as it is the mechanic setting it up. If you can get the table for under a $1000 and spend another $7 to 800 to rebuild it you will have a great table for under $2000. Just my $.02
 
I played on a Gandy 9' that had Simonis 860 on it for about 5 years, the pockets were shimmed up tight and it played great, nice rails, nice table overall. I would still be playing on if the bar that had the table would keep it up but the let all the tables go to shit, so now I am playing at another room and am shooting on an Olhausen 9' it plays pretty good but I do not think it plays as good as the Gandy did. If i had to pick a new table to play on it would most likely be the Fusion stainless model that Aramith came out with now if I could only find $9,000.00 to by it for what you are getting I think a total of about $1,200.00 would be a good buy. Good look on your table.
 
Thanks guys, I was also thinking if the basics of the table are good, then a good mechanic and set it up nice. Some places have the same tables, but some play like crap compared to others. I will have to be patient and buy the right one, or buy this if nothing else comes up.
 
It's all in the setup...

I've played on Big G's in a couple of places, and also have one of their furniture tables in my home. I've been very happy with Gandys overall; I think that they are built very solidly.

I think that the Big G's had a better reputation in years past. They haven't been manufactured in many years, and the tables still in use in commercial rooms have a lot of miles on them. Most room owners still using Big G's are probably working with a very tight budget, and are likely not bringing in top quality mechanics to keep the tables playing well.

If you can get a Big G that's in good shape for less than a thousand and have a good mechanic set it up, I think that you will be quite happy.
 
I started my pool career in 1971 on a Minnesota Fats "Pacer", which was a very cheap 8 ft'er. I graduated to a Gandy Big G around 1980 I think. It was a good table and it played ok, like an old AMF. The pockets were a little too big for my taste. But I've wanted a Brunswick since 1971. And after saving up, I was able to sell the Gandy and get the Brunswick in 1995.

The Gandy is a nice table if you want a solid table to have at home to play on. The real tell will be getting the best table mechanic you can get.
If you do something cheap, you have to do it twice. A good mechaic should be able to set you up real nice with the Gandy. Simonis 860 is a must. :)

Depending on how much pounding the rails and woodwork have taken, your price range of $800-$900 seems fair.

I have enjoyed mine for three years now. It was a good deal and it seems like a fine table to me. In fairness though, most guys on here are much better players than me and seem to have an eye for things that I don't notice.
 
We have two nine foot Gandy's in our Community club house. They're very heavy and well built. Both are covered with Simonis 860 and play well. What I don't like about them are that the pockets are too big and not enough action off the rails. If you get one, I would certainly invest in good rubber cushions (i.e., Artemis) and shim the pockets. As recommended by others - get a good table mechanic (call The Real King Cobra for recommendations if he can't do it). Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
 
When I started playing pool when i was about 16 the pool hall had Gandy Big G's. At the time i had never played on a 9' table before only little bar tables, and i thought they were great. It wasn't until a few years later when i finally played on a GCIII and i realized the Gandy was a piece of trash.. First thing you notice is how the rails play. I had only played on Gandy so i thought the rails played the right way, but then i found out how bad the Gandy rails were. Secondly, the construction. The Gandy feels cheap like a toy compared to the solid build of the GCIII. It just feels way more professional on the GC.

Save your money and get a used GC if possible.. or a Diamond.
 
I've had my Gandy...

for almost 20 years..... It's NO toy, DEFINITELY NOT a piece of trash,

IS an EXTREMELY solid and solidly built table in a home or retail atmosphere, plays every bit as good as the quality of the mechanic who sets it up. IMO it looks better than most of the tables out there, but I like a solid, clean line with a little bit of finer touch. My table is the Gandy
'sportsman' model I believe.

As said here by many.... Get a GREAT mechanic and you'll be happy.
