planning on buying a table for my garage. heat/air is not ran into garage. no place for a window unit. stays fairly cool/warm(moderate s.c. weather). is this o.k. for table? do i need a humidifier? any suggestion to any part of this process would be greatly apreciated. thanks

I cut a hole in the side of my old garage for the A/C and put a gas space heater in it with a stack that goes throuh the roof, works for me.

At the very lease, put a fan in the garage to circulate the air, then it won't feel so humid when you go out there to play.

I've been looking into this as well and one thing that has come up is the flooring. RKC can confirm this probably, but I've been told that playing on concrete gets old pretty quickly and some kind of flooring, whether carpeting, tile or linoleum, with even a small amount of cushioning underneath, is well worth the expense.

I'd like to hear from anyone else with experience about this.

garage floors are often slanted, you should check this or you will have one end of the table higher than the other------- I also have the portable AC unit, works great. A dehumidfier does the job but creates heat, better to be cool.

Are you keeping the front garage door or removing it? If you remove it for a real remodel then gypcrete your floor so its level and if the Hot waqter heater is in the garage make a large drip pan for it and plumb it outside for a drian this way you dont have to deal with major water leaks while on vacation.

If not then 1 end of the table will feel about 1 -1-1/2" higher then the other end so break towrads the the low end this way the hieght feels the same on most of your shots.

Think about what you are doing most dont relize that it costs more then expected and cut corners on insulation and electricity when in the rough stages of the conversion.

You know what guys?...A garage is a garage, meaning forget the fact that the pool table is in a garage, the floor slants for drainage, it's not air conditioned:D If you're not planing on making the garage a new room addition to your house, just put the table in, throw some 4' wide rolls of carpet down around the table where you stand, can get some from Home Depot...and enjoy playing pool;) If you focus on all the things you COULD do, you're going to miss out on what you should be doing...enjoying playing pool at home!;) Then, if you want to change or add something....do it as an after thought, that way you KNOW what you want to do...and WHY!...:D

Your right Glen but everytime I install a table in the garage 80% the time they coplain about the 2x4 or 1x4 under the legs or inbetween the legs and the frame. It cant be level i feel 1 end of the table is higher. It's just a never ending story. Everyone loves the table but hates the slope. Personally I could care less ignore it will shooting it's there just like any other obsticle wall, couch or tableand chairs.

Now I'm not sure what the problem is. I thought a table such as a GC in the garage could usually be leveled without the need for putting anything under the legs of one end. I thought the problem was not with the table bed itself being leveled but rather that the height of the table at each end would be slightly different, with one end being taller by 1/4" to 1/2" or so.

90% of gold crowns have adjustable feet most homeowners don't buy goldcrowns the get Goldenwest, delmo, import, or any other non adjustable leg table slap it in the garage with out thinking about the slope of the garage or distance from the wall to the parked car. I have actually placed standard red bricks under a table to level it out from a steep sloping garage. assume the worst and plan for the best you can do or afford.

Just one of the querks of installing in a garage i'm all for it just plan ahead that's all.

well the thread wanted to know what to look for right, so now he knows. The guy says its a garage conversion. Having a floor off an inch or more is wrong. It will suck if his table is off alot and not an easy fix later as he will have to remove his table and level his floor. Some problems should be corrected before hand or at least known about, wasn't that the point of the thread.

I wouldn't just put a table anywhere and then address the concerns. I think he should get someone in there if he can't do it and get the floor level. It doesn't cost much and its easy to do before the table gets there.

The guy most love pool as he is converting his garage. I assume he is some sort of a player and therfor a table heigth difference would be his more serious objection. Of course depending how tall he is will matter also. I have a friend who is 5' 6" and when I have an antique set up at my house he doesn't like playing on it because one side is too high and he can't bend over with any comfortable stroke. If there are young kinds playing on that table in the garage it will suck for them to if one side is much higher than the other..

Then I recommend buying another house with a room INSIDE the house for the pool table:D a garage is for the cars and storage/work...or whatever. If a home owner decides they want the pool table in the garage...then so be it, my job is to make sure the table is level and in good playing condition...not to advise the home owner as to how to convert the garage to a pool room. Yes, the table is going to be higher on one side more than the other....but that's not MY problem...as I don't have to play on it, not that it won't be playable when I'm done...because it will be! I don't care if there's spacers under the legs of the table to make up for the slope of the floor, that's not my concern...the look of the table on the floor! I set up Mike Massey's 10 Gabriels billiards table in his garage and had to make round plates out of 3/4" plywood for the down hill end of the table. Placed 2 of them under each down hill legs, then 1 more each under the center legs, then none under the high end. Table played great....then Mike sold his house to someone else....who wanted the garage to park cars in...to I took the table out...again:D

I think we all get carried away in explaining what to look out for on the perfect room. instead of sticking to basic's. We not trying to stop a person from doing it just what to look at for upgrades in the begining instead of i should have done this or that.

Should have Kept it simple simple..

thanks

all the info has been great. the portable ac unit looks great. the slope in garage was my biggest concern, but installer said the gold crown 111 could be leveled no problem. thought i might could just build up the lower end of floor a bit. thanks for all input

I didn't think the leveling would be a problem as far as the table bed goes . I played on one in a garage and the only difference is that the edge of the table will be a tad higher at one end. It didn't seem that big an issue to me. If the owner hadn't pointed it out to me I probably wouldn't even have noticed it right away.

For a short person, the table height achieved at one end will make it a little harder to reach some shots. Big whoop-de-doo. I'm 4 ft. 11 inches short. To me, it would be more important to have the table level and be able to play pool, than to whine and complain about a 2x4, or some other leveling object under the legs, if one is needed.

If you wanna get really fancy and not have the pain that walking on concrete all day does for your feet, you could put in a wooden floor that is level, on top of the concrete floor. If looks are what you are after, that would correct the possible need to put higher leveling objects under it, and it would make your floor a little more forgiving, when you spend all day around the pool table. Put some nice carpet , or even some sturdy, but nice linoleum down. Just be sure to put some kind of protective devices under the feet, so you can move the table, if you need to. That way, you don't tear up the linoleum.

Just a thought or two from this muddled up brain of mine. ;)
