GC III finish

Quick question regarding wood finish on GC III. Does anyone know what stain is most often used on the mahogony color tables. Also is the finish coat a catalyzed (sp) lacquer. tia.
 
Noone? Maybe a bit more info of what I am planning might help. I am considering a refinish on my GC III. I would prefer the original finish to go back on. I tried the search feature came up wanting. (alot of stain and finish info in Cue Makers threads, however doesn't apply) I do recall recently someone mentioing a couple of stains that matched well, can't find post. I assume the top coat is lacquer, possibly catalyzed.

Anyone refinished a GC with natural wood finish?

I recently purchased a GCIII that needed a complete refinish. The skirts were trashed. I used a palm sander & 100 grit discs to bring it to bare wood. I then used minwax red mahogany stain & then 2 coats of semi-gloss minwax polyurethane. Post pics, always like to see nice tables.

You could also consider a chemical stripper, much less painful than sanding IMO.
 
I recently refinished my Brunswick Heritage. When I stripped off the rail finish I discovered that it was a type of varnish/paint. The wood was different underneath. The original finish was to make it look uniform. After doing some research I went with a Danish oil finish.

So far it worked out really good as I can easily repair any damage that occurs.
I would recommend trying it on a scrap piece or the backside of a piece to test and see if you like it. It brought out the beauty of the grain and ended up really smooth with a sealed finish.

Nice! I'm happy to see that when sanding down it gets to bare wood. I'm thinking of doing mine with an ebony stain when I redo them.

Very nice!:thumbup: Thanks for the info and pics. Did you spray poly (thinned I assume) or foam brush / roll it? Any sealer?
 
Wow!! Nice job

Great work on the sideskirts, did you do anything to the corner castings? They look new as well. The topcoat is worn off of mine and tarnished, but I'm thinking of powdercoating them.

Thank you everyone for the positive responses. It really wasn't that much work. 2 weekends & some patience. The skirts were cake. One of the legs had water damage & buckled the veneer, that was a bit trickier...... As far as applying the poly, I used a foam brush :smile:

What did you use on the top of the rails where the Formica is to make them shine like thay do? Thanks dstone120647
 
PUTT.....you asked the question I was trying to avoid :cool: I will show you what my castings looked like, but more importantly what my feet looked like. In short I sanded them down with the orbital & then painted (yes I said PAINTED them). I couldn't bring myself to spend the $250 on powder coating them. I'm spend thrifty, what can I say. Anyhow, here is the evidence. Criticize as you see fit :frown:

Dstone, I think it's the combination of the pledge furniture polish & the fluorescent lighting giving that shine :smile:
 
As you can tell she helped daddy put the washers on the bolts to bolt up the frame. No she can't reach, but, nobody puts the rack on the table & puts the balls faster on the table than she does. She watches & waits until the 8 ball drops & promptly retrieves the rack & balls :smile:

I need to teach my little girl that! She's almost 8 and I'm just starting now to get her to work on trying. She can put in a few balls from time to time. Got her one of the Drake Bell kids cues from Robin Dodson for Xmas. She also loves to roll the balls on the table to play with angles trying to guess where they will end up. I'm lucky that she is one of the tallest kids in her class, so she can somewhat make a bridge and play. You can see her trying here http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=214847

Awesome!!! My Daughter just turned 4 so she has a little way to go. I can't wait until she can play!!!
 
Powdercoating $$$$$ -not anymore

I personally went to four different powdercoating shops here in Vegas with the same set of castings and feet (10 pieces total) per table to get ballpark bids on the powdercoating, with the first three giving me the same results that you got. $225 -$300 per 10 piece set.

Discouraged, I still went to the last one on my list with a glimmer of hope......and whatttya know. Finally a shop with my kind of pricing. Less than $100 per table for all ten pieces.

The guy even asked if I had more pieces because my small job wouldn't meet the $125 minimum. I told him I had other tables also and I would be back in the morning with 2 tables worth. I went there this morning and dropped them off 20 pieces and he said he'll have them for me tomorrow evening before closing!!!!

Cross my fingers and wait but I might have found the guy we've been lookin' for. I'll post before and after pic's over the weekend if I get the castings back tomorrow.
