Get off my lawn, Things I hate in pool today

Dirty pool tables.

It's not that hard to clean pool tables regularly. I worked in a pool hall off and on for a few years. We opened at 12 and the shift started at 11am. In that hour i would clean 15 tables and balls and take out the trash and clean the ash trays. The rest of the day i would man the register, play pool and gamble or watch TV.

I don't see what the problem is with these owners and keeping tables clean. It's not like these places are packed first thing in the morning. Put your employees to work. They are getting paid and they get free table time.

10/4 on this. I won't play 'fone pool'. I've told more than one player that they either turn it off or i hop. Total bullshit.
I had a match with Mr Phone and every time I looked around he was on his phone. It was his break ( alternate) and the phone was on his ear as he's trying to break. He miscued and I grabbed the CB and as I'm deciding what to do he's off in the distance again. I said FK you buddy and rolled up to the rear ball. He had no idea I took the foul and thought I hooked him. He smashed the pack and the CB went flying off the table and I picked it up and a couple guys watching the match were killing them selves laughing especially after I said I said I said pay attention son.

I guess I'll jump in...why not???

1- The death of Straight Pool...the game I've loved since my Dad handed me a cue at age 3, is virtually non-existent...there are no local Straight Pool tournaments in my area...Hell...there aren't even any Straight Pool leagues!!!
2- Bar boxes...grew up playing on a 5'x10' Brunswick Centennial, and to the best of my knowledge the BCA in 1949-1950, chose the 4.5'x9' as the official table size...yet any amateur event at SBE, (including the Pro-Am) is on a damn bar box...when you go to a bowling alley, they don't ask if you want the 60' lane or 40' lane...amateur or pro everybody bowls on the same size lane...pool should be no different...
3- "TV balls"...the color of pool balls were just fine, for a hundred years, until some nitwit decided Pepto-Bismol pink, dinner mint green, and tan bark brown, would be better for television...
4- slop...games that do not require called ball and pocket...

I'm sure there are more things that grate my chalk, but those are the first to come to mind...

Races to 4 or 5 with a spot shot tie breaker.

I like races to 9, 11 or more. Winner breaks, wood rack, opponent racks, light sharking allowed up to the point the shooter gets down on the shot.

sharking and pulling moves. maybe an obvious thing to say, but i for one is happy that pool is becoming more professional. if you can't win the game with your cue, don't bother. i think professionalism is trickling down the ranks too, just slowly

Masters or other “dirty” chalk

Sandbaggers

Nights when I can’t make a six-foot stop shot

Hip hop or rap on the jukebox

Having to explain to lower level teammates *every single time* during a time out to place ball-in-hand at a slight angle to get to the next shot

Beating myself - I don’t mind losing if I get beat. I can’t stand it when I beat myself because I dog a shot or go for the bad decision when I know better.

Dinging my cue on a metal chair. I am a klutz.

It's all in the presentation lol. I look for caroms, combos and inoffs especially when another ball is near a pocket. I try to make everything I do like I played it and sometimes say out loud get in there you lol.

thats one that gets me lol
bih and one balls hanging in the pocket with the other on the other side of the table on the short rail

places ball infront of the ob shooting towards the pocket full hit

'timeout'

Had that two days ago on a neighboring table. Metallica on the juke box helped. I hope no one was bothered by that. :devilish::poop:
Fun tidbit about TouchTunes: It has a "mood" you can change with 1-2 tracks if no one else is actively playing. If you play a couple tracks in similar genre it'll stick there. "Cemetery Gates" always seems to do it for me. ✊🤘

I haven't come across this one in a few years (because the rooms that had it all closed up, for unrelated reasons)....

Places where they don't turn the AC on and its hot as balls to play.

  1. Incredibly slow players
  2. Players that come to play a little bit of pool between cigarettes. Nothing puts me on tilt quite like waiting around for an hour for my match to start and then needing to wait for my opponent to take a “quick smoke break”
