Get Shape on the 9

Get_A_Grip the way I was trying to setup this shot up in the diagram it is much too straight into the point of the side pocket to go the route you described. Many people tried back when I first learned this shot your way and nobody was able to make it go the route you did. I think I made the diagram with too much angle possibly.

I also said that you couldn't hit the bottom side cushions as in where the rack is positioned in the diagram. Doing the shot I described it doesn't always take the path that Jude diagramed. It can go to each side of the 9 ball without ever hitting a cushion as well. I apologize if didn't make my rules more clearly.

Forbidden by the statement: "the cue ball can't hit the bottom half of the table side cushions," but probably the shot I'd try in a game if I had to get straight on the 9.

Sorry Russ I didn't mean to come off as hostile. I should have put a smiley I guess. It's a thread I created and I wanted to see if people could think outside the box a little within the rules I set. And that punk Jude had to come along and get the answer if the first reply!

Jude wins! And he is right about it not being as difficult as it looks. Actually seeing it executed properly can be a thing a beauty. Billy from Bogies in Houston showed me this shot. The guy has a monster stroke and I didn't think I would be able to execute it but I was surprised at me being able to do it somewhat consistently.

I play it with at about 45 degrees with a tip & a half of right and aim at the far right edge of the 8 ball.

The closer you are to the pocket or object ball, the more realistic this shot becomes. I'm not GREAT at it but good enough that I consider it an option. I know a few players that can expect to make this shot.

I liked get-a-grip's solution. I've done it myself tho I sure wouldn't make a proposition out of it (and the situation is not half so rare as russ makes it out to be).

You almost have to be willing to let the CB hop a little so it keeps as much velocity as possible when it meets the OB, and aim carefully for as much pocket cheat as possible. When I've seen this shot work, it looks almost like the guy tried to jump a ball that isn't there.

I'll admit I haven't tried jude's way tho, maybe I'll find it's easier and better.

Let's put it this way. There is no player in the world for whom this masse is the right choice. A top pro can tap in the eight and cut the nine in about 80% of the time. The second that same top pro jacks up the cue with the object ball frozen to the long rail, the eight is missable for every player that has ever played the game and all those yet to come.

I am very proficient at masses and can execute this shot, though certainly with no regularity. I admire anyone who has tis shot in their arsenal, but the shot has no practical value in this position as the eight and the cue ball are so far apart.

From this distance (OB to CB) the masse would be a hail Mary shot for me. If the 8 was a diamond or more closer to the frozen CB along the same line, I'd try the masse. John Schimt showed me how to hit off angle masse shots about three years ago. They are a regular part of my practice routine and have saved me several times since.
