Get Shape on the 9

Added Difficulty... You can't bank the 8, the cue ball can't hit the bottom half of the table side cushions, and bank shape on the 9 doesn't count! Also no lagging the cueball up a foot or so and taking the cut. I'm talking ideal shape.

In the diagram the aiming line from the cue ball to 8 ball has the 8 striking the left corner of the side pocket. The cue ball is frozen.

Since the cue can't hit the side cushion. how about slow rolling the 8 in and just shooting the nine in the lower right corner?

Forbidden by the statement: "Also no lagging the cueball up a foot or so and taking the cut. I'm talking ideal shape."
 
I think putting arbitrary limitations on this shot is silly. Shoot it whatever way is the highest percentage. For YOU. :D That's what Buddy would do.

Franky.... Are you right handed?

And another thing... This particular position is hardly ever gonna come up, if you are a player capable of executing these shots. If your opponent left you this, then he screwed up position so bad, he probably can't beat you anyways, and it doesn't matter if you miss or make this particular shot.

And if you are a good player and left yourself exactly frozen to the rail like this, then just take your medicine and lose the game, like a big boy... :D :D :D

In other words, whatever you do on this shot besides just rolling forward and taking the shot, MASSIVELY reduces your odds of being successful. Pool is about percentages, so play the percentages.. I mean, it's fun and all to say "what if", but in the end, most everyone here is still gonna either bank the eight, or just roll forward and take the shot..

Well, it's no hanger, but 50 tries? It's really not that bad; the cueball doesn't curve very much on the way to the ob, and you can get a pretty good feel for the shot after just a couple of swings at it. Given the strange rules of this proposition, I'd say it's the highest % option, lol.

One time Efren missed and left me this situation. Luckily I used your logic and realized that he sucks so I just missed again on purpose hoping he'd hang up the 9 for me.

Just asking, because unless you shoot the shot left handed, you are often going to be left with a shot you have to have a bad stance for, reaching across your body to make it. If you come off the second rail a little shorter, it gets even worse.

I say either bank the eight or roll it in and take the tougher shot, which allows for comfortable bridging. If that 9 is frozen, it's a hanger anyways.. :D :D :D

High Left & Jacked-up...

I know how I would shoot it -- because I just tried it three times. First attempt I missed the eight....but then made the shot, got the leave, and made the 9-ball twice in a row....convincing myself that this is how I would shoot it...

No other type of shot is as easy as this one...IMHO...

Jude wins! And he is right about it not being as difficult as it looks. Actually seeing it executed properly can be a thing a beauty. Billy from Bogies in Houston showed me this shot. The guy has a monster stroke and I didn't think I would be able to execute it but I was surprised at me being able to do it somewhat consistently.

I play it with at about 45 degrees with a tip & a half of right and aim at the far right edge of the 8 ball.

Okay.. since we are going to be a little smarty pants here, and since I know you are not telling a true tale, I wille explain why the reasoning DOES make sense.

How many good players do you know that leave themselves a shot on the 9 from where the cue ball is?

Hint: Your opponent was trying to make the 8, and the cue ball ended up where it is because he was playing position on the 9... So that means his position play either sucks donkey gonads, or he didn't even pay attention to position, either of which means he can't beat a good player. Good players, even on really hard shots, DO NOT just try to make the ball and pray for position..

A remote third possibility is that he missed a force follow shot and the OB bounced back and hit the CB, and the CB drifted over and froze to a rail. Yeah... Uh huh.... Rrrrright.

My experience has been that you are left with shots like this because you failed to aim to go an extra few rails for position on a ball in the side.. You weren't thinking and ended up in the exact spot you can't get out reliably from.

A lot can be gleaned about a player from one glance at the table....

I'd give my opponent 10% of the bet up front if we were hill-hill, as long as they choose this shot over any other option..... :D
