Glass City Open Update!!!!!!!

Qoute: "Lunchmoney and Cut Shot, Seattle sounds dreamy. It would be great to be able to check out the pool scene there."

Like I said, I should see Harry at the end ofd this month and will express your and Keith's desire to head up this way. Hopefully, based on your busv schedule it will be very soon, I live in Mount Vernon about 60 miles north of Seattle and a 5 minute drive to a pool hall that has 12 9-foot tables, it has a fair amount of action. I am betting Keith could do pretty good giving lessons, You guys could stay at my place as I have four bedrooms and only one of my kids still live at home. addirtion to all this, I have an 100 year old Brunswick-Balke-Collendar (sp) in my rec room that has 3 3/4 inch pockets. if you are interested, send me a PM. Harry will also come up to the pool hall in Mount Vernon as he knows the owner. It would be a lot of fun sitting around trading stories about the '70s :D

Lunchmoney

Johnny Archer defeated Keith, 10 to 7. Buddy Hall beat Jeremy Jones. Keith and Jeremy came in 9th through 12th, winning a cool dime.

Corey Deuel is playing Danny Basavich currently, and Buddy Hall is battling it out with Troy Frank.

The promoters here really put out the red carpet for all the pro players, and we are having a blast. I was sitting in the stands during one match and I overheard a couple of railbirds chatting. They were local Toledans, and one said to the other, "I can't believe how lucky we are to have all of this right here in Toledo." The stands are packed, and I've got to say, everybody is being treated to some first-class pool playing.

If I had to project and pick a winner, I'd play a dollar-triple-box on Earl Strickland, Corey Deuel, and Johnny Archer, in no particular order. They seem to have the best read of the tables, based on their performance so far. Time will tell, though, and first place is up for grabs to any of the remaining players.

Action is on the horizon for tonight as well as some mini tournaments open to all. :)

Lots of pool media folks here in full force, all the pool mags. The main event is tomorrow when the finals will be recorded for TV, cable, and Accu-Stats!

JAM,

Tell Keith congrats! That's awesome!!! Second, you can't leave us hangning on the action, who's he playin'!

This just in...

We walked down to the tournament room to check out the matches, and you could cut the air with a knife. Very tension-filled matches, and it is now standing room only. Every seat in the house is filled.

Johnny Archer is playing local hometown Toledo champion, Steve McAninch. There is currently a "no talking" ordinance in full force. Johnny is taking the heat, due to the crowds cheering madly after every good shot and win for Steve. When I left, the score was Steve 6 and Johnny 5. This is a losers' bracket match.

Earl Strickland is playing Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant, and was leading by one game, Charlie 7, Earl 6. They're both on the winners' side.

Troy Frank beat Buddy Hall on the B side. Buddy comes in seventh or eighth, I believe. Troy told us that he is having success in his break. He's having a great tournament.

The pro tournament room won't open up for action games until the tournament matches are concluded for the day. There seems to be more stakehorses than players in attendance (LOL), but it should make some great evening entertainment. Pookie drove up here from Virginia several days ago, and he's hoping to engage in some competition later on this evening. Heard Jason Kirkwood had a nice little run late last night after hours.

Short update here in Toledo.

JAM you have a PM in Keiths box. It's great to see Troy playing so well. He is a very underated player IMHO. I don't think there's anybody in the tournament he hasn't beat at one time or another. I was going to go up to Toledo but the twins are due any day and my wife threw her back out Thursday getting our 3 year old out of the car. Hopefully I'll cath up with everyone at DCC since I'll be Mr Mom for a couple of months and won't be able to get out and play until aftre the 1st of the year.

Do you have any results on Strickland vs. Bryant or Deuel vs. Basavich? I have some V-Bookie (funny-money) bets I'm sweatin' ;)

Thanks,
Tracy

Never mind, they settled both bets. I got them both wrong.

Up like a rooster, I go down to the tournament room, and all the tables have been broken down, except for one, which is sitting in the middle of the room for the big event. The finals are supposed to occur at 7:00 p.m.

This will be recorded by BCn and Accu-Stats. I heard it through the grapevine that Buddy Hall will be one of the two commentators. Buddy has a lot of flair and color, and I really like hearing the infamous Buddy laugh. With his knowledge of the game, he's a perfect fit (IMO). He's one of a kind, and I can't wait to see how the finals match unfolds. It's nothing but first class all the way here in Toledo.

Saw Ryan McCreesh in the lobby and he's on his way back to the pool room for action. I guess since they broke down the tables for the finals, the after-hours players moved to the local pool room here in Toledo.

Dawg Andy, I saw Troy in the restaurant this morning and gave him your message. He knew immediately who you were, but hoped he could remember your phone number.

On the winners' side, Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich and Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant.

On the losers' side, Troy Frank and Corey Deuel, two Ohio natives and good friends.

Bill Meachum and Buddy Hall will be commentating all semi-final and final matches for TV, cable, BCn, and Accu-Stats.

The tension builds in Toledo

Just went down to the tournament room. They are having a players meeting with the remaining four players who were checking out the TV table, making sure it was level, checking out the pool balls being used. Corey Deuel was getting fitted with a microphone pack located on his back belt. If there is any conversation between the players during the match, it will be picked up, thanks to these microphones.

On the way to the players meeting, I ran into Danny Basavich, and he's had a good night's sleep and has no fear. He is confident and hopes to snatch this title. Danny has a great spirit and I can't think of anybody more deserving than Danny.

Troy Frank is a favorite here in Ohio, since he's a native. He's a very quiet, unassuming type fellow and is playing strong this tournament. He attributes his success to the break.

I spoke to Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant at the players meeting. With Hillbilly's powerful break, he's going into the finals with no fear. I like Charlie's demeanor at the table. He knocked Keith in the losers' bracket and has the keen ability to maintain focus during the matches.

Corey Deuel is a super star. With his blond-spiked hairdo, he's very stylish and is a definite favorite with the ladies. He is wearing the Woodpecker logo on his shirt. Corey is no stranger to the finals and has played on the TV table on numerous occasions. With the many bright and hot lights, the table does roll a little differently than the rest of the tables. With his experience, he's got a good shot at winning the whole event, even though he's in the losers' bracket currently.

The crowds are lined up outside of the tournament room, and they're jam-packed. There's a lot of pool spirit here in Toledo, great fans, and everybody is having a lot of fun. Wish they could have a Glass City Open traveling show throughout the country. This is what it's all about, and when you're here and see the fans, players, and everybody else, you can feel the excitement. I'm not sure if we're going to stay for the finals at 7:00 p.m., due to a 7-1/2-hour drive back home to D.C. The semi-finals will begin at 1:00 p.m.

The trophy is really cool. It is an enclosed 9-ball rack with 8 crystal-clear balls and the traditional yellow-and-white 9-ball in the middle. On the bottom of the trophy, there are two brass placques with Nick Varner's name for winning the 2002 GCO and Johnny Archer's name for winning the 2003 GCO. There is room for the new winner's name on the bottom, and it's anybody's guess as to who it will be. The Calcutta paid out six places. First place wins $8,000 and the Glass City Open championship title, a tradition that I hope is going to keep coming back every year. I know I'll be back for sure.

Kid Delicious keeps Corey Deuel benched at GCO

Kid Delicious caught a second gear between matches and ran a 6-pack on Corey in the semi-final match of the losers' side. When I left, the score was 9 to 1, racing to 10.

Corey could only sit there and smile as Danny put on a display of pure wizardry. At the beginning of the match, Danny executed perfect safety plays in which Corey missed making a legal contact with the ball twice, allowing Danny ball in hand to continue his streak. The momentum went all Danny's way and he continued run rack after rack.

The 30-second shot clock is in force, and each player is allowed one extension per game. The line on the game was a pick 'em.

Jerry Forsythe and Buddy Hall are commentating this match for the recorded broadcast. I received my Danny Deliberto CD and am looking forward to reading the book.

Looks like it may be the Hillbilly and the Kid in the finals at the time of this writing.
