Glasses and pool

There are billiard eyeglasses made in Canada. The side frames are lower on lens leaving more lens above the frame so that when you lean down the lens is in correct position. Optician name is G. Harrison and he is incredibly patient and helpful with players (he redid mine again and again until he and I were satisfied).Phone # in canada is 450-465-3058 or use 1-877-465-3058. Website is www.billiard-eyeglasses.com and email is coupe@bellnet.ca If he's still in business (since 1979) give him a shout, he's very easy to talk to. Best of luck, hope this helps as I know it's a real problem for many of us. Shoot me a PM if you need any more input from me.

You will get lots of opinions on this topic, as it's been discussed lots.

In my case, I only wear glasses for reading, and the PC. Distance isn't a problem, but as I get older, I notice it's not what it was 5 years ago(distance). I'm a Cad Designer, so I spend 10 hrs. a day at the computer.
I tried the Pool Glasses, and they weren't for me. I've always worn my glasses on the bridge of my nose, and I look over the top when not looking at a screen, and I just couldn't adjust. I would rather let my game suffer, than to wear glasses at the table.
About 2 years ago, I had my doctor fit me for daily contacts, after he told me that he's helped a couple of pool players with similar stories, and I haven't looked back.
He set my prescription from 3-12 feet. And it was like a come to Jesus moment for me. Just incredible. And the weird thing is they helped my distance as well, which he told me might happen.(+1.5/+1.75).

I have nothing against the pool glasses, and everyone is different, but for me contacts were it. The biggest problem is, you will need to adjust to either one(glasses/contacts) at the table, but after 10-20 hours of table time, you'll see a big difference. For me it was cut shots. I was over cutting everything for a few hours, until I slowly adjusted for it.

I would give the glasses a shot as the price is right:thumbup:........ but don't overlook the contacts. He may be able to give you a couple samples to try.

Good Luck.

Do you wear them all the time or just to play pool?

My glasses have been in my way for along time. I use them for most everything but can get away with sunglasses in the daytime when outside or driving. I looked over the top for years. Then I bumped them up and do my best to look though them but they really are in the way, especially on 9'ers.

Played a BCA 8 ball match last eve and one of the gentlemen had a pair of glasses that were specifically made up for pool. He swore by them. They reminded me of Tom Kite's glasses back in the day. He sharked me when he asked 'Don't those thin frames get in your way?' Should have lied...lol.

Played BCA 9 Ball this eve and all the F#@k I could think of were my frikin' frames being in the way. Sharked myself, sold out on several games. Think it's time to try contacts out or just leave the glasses off one day and see how I shoot. I am still far from blind just in the habit of wearing them inside.

Good rolls,

I started wearing glasses after being back into pool about a year and a half. I have issues seeing distances not up close. Still the balls were a little fuzzy at the end of the table. I wear them, I think they help, everything is crystal clear.

A big thing for me w glasses I recently discovered is wearing a baseball cap dramatically cuts down glare.

I had to start wearing glasses a few years back. It never affected me.

You line up the shot and get down on that line.

Address the ball and get the grove of your stroke.

If nothing feels right get up and start over as you aren't supposed to make adjustments down on the shot.

You should be able to close your eyes and make the shot.

If you can do that then your stroke and alignment are correct there is no reason or purpose on looking at the CB or OB while making the shot. Glasses won't affect you at all because you can close your eyes and make the shot.

I admit I have not read the whole thread as there have been numerous similar threads in the past. As I have mentioned before, I wear distance contacts for pool. It is amazing what they can do with contacts today. I have an astigmatism in my left eye and see everything on the table clear as a bell. You don't realize what a pain in the ass glasses are until you get contacts. Incidentally, you can drive wearing distance contacts.

I switched to contacts over 20 years ago and never looked back. The dailies are very comfortable. I just recently (last week) switched to a new kind of daily that is even more comfortable.

I don't wear the contacts all the time, but 100% of the time when I play pool, shooting or any other sport. Smokey rooms don't bother me. Even if they did, rewetting drops would fix that right up no problem.

The new contacts are great. They don't move around on my eyeball like the old ones occasionally did, and there's no funny business in my peripheral vision. With glasses, unless they're on your head absolutely perfectly, there are always aberrations as you look away from dead center. That's the first thing I noticed when I started wearing contacts way back when...my peripheral vision came back. I've worn glasses pretty much my whole life, so it was an incredible experience to see everything for the first time.

I wear extra large frame shooters glasses. The frame is adjusted to sit above my eyebrow. They are made to view 3-9ft. I cannot see a thing without them. One big blurry picture. I get examined and upgrade the RX as needed. Had them done in Springhouse, PA. Specialty eyewear has to be done by someone that takes a serious interest in working with you as they might have to done once or twice (or 3x) until you are satisfied. They are converted RayBan sun glasses. I'm not a contact lens person.

Some who wear contacts have a hard time in smokey rooms.

Yes, this is correct. I dont have that problem in my room, but at a Super Bowl Party, where there was lots of smoking, I did have to use my drops a couple times.

Do you wear them all the time or just to play pool?

No, I only wear them when I golf, shoot pool, and other outdoor activities.

There are huge differences in contacts from say 10 years ago. I wear the Dailies, and these are so light, you hardly know your wearing them.

I'd love to have a pair of glasses for pool. When I wear my distance glasses I'm amazed at how sharp the table, pockets and balls are. It's almost startling.

However, I can't wear them to play, particularly on longer shots where I am down on the ball as my eyes see over the top of the lens as others have stated.

Last time I had my eyes checked I talked to the guy about playing and lens height etc, he looked at me like I was from mars.

If I could find a pair of billiard glasses that weren't in the $350-$500 range I'd jump on them.

I am certain it would improve my game.

Glasses complete in the UK work great, price reasonable, somewhere between 1 and 2 hundred.

Bump.... Good links here. I ordered a pair from the center link. I feel it helped my game as far as how well I could see the object ball.

(edit) I did try the Decots before buying the Canadian ones. Being primarily skeet glasses, they didn't work as well for pool. Thicker, heavier, not as comfortable. Probably because of the shatterproof requirements of shooting sports combined with a pretty heavy prescription for my 20-400 eyes.

Glad I saw this post I was just having problems with long straight in shots and realized it was my glasses. and was contemplating getting contacts. after reading peoples responses. im getting contacts. thanks

I wear glasses now, but I can't wear them playing pool. I can never feel comfortable because the frame is in the way or I'm looking over the top of them. I wear contacts when I play, only once a week. My contacts are customized with one eye a bit stronger than I really need, so that I can focus on close and far shots...sort of blended vision. If I was going to use them for daily wear at normal distance vision, I wouldn't have the one eye customized for the shorter distance viewing.
