Going out on a limb

Jay, if you ever get up this way, I think I may have just the match for you. ;)

At your age, you can still tangle with kids if you want to. I've always said about the older players, that even if they can no longer out-shoot you, they'll still out-smart you. I think you've still got some shooting to do. Like you said about the table time and all.. as long as you're playing and playing for something, does anything else really matter?

...

Johnnyt - Sorry to hear about your leg, that doesn't sound very pleasant at all. Hope that you're doing alright and healing up.

I seen you in the action room at derby city on the stream bank few shots, you look like you can get into the $$$ with almost anyone.

Jay, Jay, Jay.....

When you were gracious enough to let me spend a night at your house @ 2.5 years ago, with Ming Ng there also, I felt blessed to play my first ever one pocket game on your Diamond. It was an honor to help you package your just released Pool Wars books in your office and observe the names that we postaged. Since then, I have learned the game well. Not a world beater, but I'm pretty handy. In any case.... In all games I have improved, in good part due to learning one hole. TY.

I want some of you. 3 sets all around for some cheese. I think we'd match up square and it'd be a good battle. Next opportunity - even if it takes until the Q in Oct - SHIP IT YOU OLE SOB! I'm calling you out in public brother! No cowering permitted!!! Hehehe

Matt <-- may live to regret this call-out

Game on bro!

Jay, best of luck on both your goals: (1) playing great pool again, and (2) getting your hands on a 29 year old female :D

If it makes you feel better I think you have a better shot at goal # 1 :D

You might be surprised. That's all I have to say about that.

Nice post Jay and good luck with your game.I got to tell you i have always wondered how you play.Every now and then Popcorn talks about the good old days.(That's about everyday). Your name always seems to surface.Just wondering if you have any video's of yourself on the internet playing.Would like to see and would appreciate it.

Me and Corn were real close (speed wise) and we played One Pocket and Banks several times (always even). Our usual game (back in the 60's) was twenty a game, not chump change then.

Somebody needs to open your nose up real good. I think you would start doing what has to be done to stop that nose bleed ;) ...... :slap:

Hey buddy, You always got me for some cheap 9 ball or one pocket. I'm just a phone call or PM away !!!!!!!

On the road again ...

Looks like we need to do a road trip, Jay. Problem is, eeveryone in the pool world knows you. I think we'd need to find you a good disguise. How 'bout a toupee?

That's a long drive for a guy your age:smile: Best to stop in Medford for a burger and a few hours of cheap 1pkt with me along the way.

I never talk much about it because to me it's somewhat irrelevant. U.J. Puckett once said, "How old would you be if you didn't know when you were born?" Sounds simple but is actually very profound. Puckett was a old wise man. So here I am after 67 years wondering what it will be like to get old. I still feel pretty damn good and ready to roll. A few of my bodily functions are not working quite up to snuff, but nothing really to complain about. I know I need more exercise and a better diet, but so far so good. I'm about 10-15 pounds over my ideal weight, not too fat as yet.

I have been a pool player for nearly 50 years now, with occasional breaks of anywhere from a few months to a few years (1976-79 the longest). I've decided that since I'm already back in pretty decent stroke I want to give pool one last honest effort to see how good I can play at my age. My goal is to try to get better every year from now on, not worse. I think that's a lofty goal for someone my age with a lukewarm motivation to play for several years now.

The way this will look for me is to play in whatever tournaments I can (I do have a pretty busy schedule these days, so I will be a part time tourney player at best) and get in action when possible (probably mostly for modest stakes compared to the high rollers on here - just call me Nit please). Right now I haven't done much on either end of this, failing to cash in the only tourneys I played in (two) and losing twice in money games ($80 and $40 :embarrassed2:). Even though my stroke feels okay, I find myself tightening up when forced to bear down. I want to see if I can overcome this and have some better results. That will be the yardstick I will gauge my progress by. Now let's go and hit some balls.

If your ever headed to Montana or I know Madden is headed your way Ill put up 300 on Jack and you two can play some whatever. 150 9 ball set 150 one pocket set if you split one 10 ball set for all the cheese.

I was just thinking about how i said that and wanted to be clear the sets would be 300 each because id be backing Madden for 300, 150 each set.

Just when I am starting to feel comfy complaining about being 45 and my game sucking so bad and my prime being behind me somebody like you has to come along and piss in my cornflakes.

I'm going to play pool tonight. I have been whining and complaining about not having the money and not having the time and sometimes in secret just being too damned proud to let myself be seen shooting so badly.

Screw it. I'm going to play pool.

I'll tell the wife Jay made me do it.

You left out Bank Pool! Why?

Sounds like Jay Lion to me-

I think Puckett said nobody beat him-- Crane , Balsis. Great to hear ya talk about William Burge- Cornbred Red- His favorites were Ronny Allen or Ed Kelly- Don Willis and Whimpy hustled a game or 2. What about Peter Margo. I'll stop here a few dozen names short of Kollins Murphy,Cosmo,DeLiberto LaSieur,Springer, Kaiman,Omaha Fats,Cokes,Carpenter,Johnson, Fats, Who didn't Jay watch or play?? thanks in advance for replys. mark

Sounds good, Sir Jay

Happy birthday, my friend. You and I are about the same age, so I know and agree with your feelings. Getting better with age is possible. I know because my brother Jack is 80 something and he still runs out with proficiency. Pool is the ony sport where the yougsters don't come and run the older players off the field. If they think they can,let them drift down Florida way and take a bite out of Mr. Buddy Hall. They won't like the taste, I assure you.
Glad to see you're selling lots of books.

Keep it nice...but you always do, Jay. Alfie

i saw Jack bank a ball, im down, will make it 450....

I got a better idea, I'll just play that old hustler for the whole enchilada playing Banks since he's so good at that game.
He'll have to come down here though, cause I'm not headed to the wilds of Montana for a long time. I might catch a chill. ;)

P.S. He can put up a cue and I'll put up some cash. I'd love to win one of his good players!
P.P.S. Now I remember winning a Jack Madden cue from Dave Nottingham in Vegas many years ago. I was stupid and sold it. Now I know better, I'll keep the next one I get my hands on.

I played Petey in the first Caesars Tahoe tourney 30 years ago. I don't have to tell you how that turned out. He was a world beater, top ten maybe top five at the time. The best player I ever saw quit the game at a young age. He made millions in the video rental business though. Pretty smart decision on his part.

Whatever works. Because the main point of your thread was age, I just thought the fans would like to see two old dogs battle over a bone. Every year in Oct. I have to remind Madden hes one year closer to needing the six.:p If we have to wait for him to get a cue made you guys will need bridges welded on your walkers... But ill let him know he was wondering what you would have to say... I sure would like to see some sun and with your money he can take me to Disneyland:D
