Gold Crown IV Rails & Speed

Has anyone ever noticed Gold Crown IV tables playing a little on the slow side? Or ever noticed or suspected the rails might not be as bouncy as they should?

I have noticed from around the time I first got my GC IV (Jan 2003) that it never really seemed to be a fast playing table. There are times when I hit shots that the CB seemingly doesn't go very far and I end up short on position. I noticed this a couple of times last night.

Having said that, both Tom Rossman (Dr. Cue) and Scott Lee have basically played on my table and apparently neither one noticed anything wrong.

The reason I am asking now is that my mechanic, who I believe is an expert on Gold Crowns, is going to be down this weekend and I was wondering if there is anything he could do to possibly check this out. Is there anything I should have him check?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can pretty easily compare your rails with another table by rolling a ball down a "ramp" of two cues resting on the end rail of each. If you start the ball at the same height on the "ramp" it should have pretty much the same speed - then just measure how far it bounces off the opposite rail in each case.

On a table with reasonable cushions you should be able to hit the far end cushion three times (total of 5 table lengths). How many can you get?

On a related point, GC3s are known for having cushions that die young. Maybe the 4 uses the same material.

Tom Rossman told me if you can take BIH and slam the CB across table (across the 4.5 foot width) and have it go back and forth 4 and 1/2 times the cushions are fine. I can do that on this table.

I've never tried the far end cushion three times.

OCD, have you tried replacing the light bulbs before shooting the CB??

You need to get out more... just go play somewhere other then home against someone other then yourself.

Get a realistic expectation of competitive pool at your level and find out how other tables play and what you like the best... not just for your sake, but for all of our sake as well.

I have a gc4 that I would call slow too. Cloth is very worn and I never had it with new cloth.

Burns! I need ya.

That's less than half the distance of Bob's lengthwise test. Just sayin'.

I tried this last night. Getting 5 table lengths was a stretch. I think I got about 3.5, might have gotten 4.

Bob,
Are you saying put the CB on the spot and smack/stroke it as hard as I can with my cue, and that I should be able to get 5 table lengths by doing so?

Recently got a GC4 myself and had a lesson with Scott Lee shortly afterwards who noticed the cushions were rebounding slowly. I was only getting about 3 1/2 lengths. I am having the cushions replaced with new superspeeds.

May I ask how much that is going to run? You can PM me if you wish.

Oh, and was your GC IV new or used and was the cloth new?

Mike

Every GC4 I've played on gets about 4.5 table lengths with the cb on the spot and a smooth fast stroke. CB is on the table most of that time (not airborne).

You may want to look into using some other material.

Ok, I went back down to the table just a few minutes ago and managed to get 4 and 1/2 table lengths. So, I assume my cushions are pretty good. Either way i'll ask my mechanic when he comes down this Saturday. We are forecast for snow in Indiana on Sunday so he's going to be here on Saturday.

And on the bad news front, I managed to make some balls on the break, get a few shots, and then manage to hose up 4 out of 5 spreads that I felt like I should normally run.

Inconsistency folks, inconsistency...:(

What would you recommend?
I'd ask in the table mechanics forum. I think it will require some rail modification to take a European rubber due to the different profile. Maybe there is a match that requires less work.

(In this area, I'd just have Ernesto Dominguez do it if I needed new rubber on a table.)

My mechanic was down yesterday and he basically said that I bought my Gold Crown IV at a time when Brunswick was using some questionable rubber/cushions.

Having said that, however, he checked my table out and said he thought my table was fine at this point.
