Gold Crown Paint codes

GC I Apron wood layers

Here's a pic of the ball box apron.... since the 16'x20' room is dark, the only light is from a bank of 4 table lights, I stained it lighter. If this was a showpiece, then I would of stained it much darker before I put a clear coat on.

Note: the formula for the paint changes based on how much paint you are buying. Quart, gallon, 5 gallon...

Paul, mornin'....hope your doing good.

I was told the aprons were Kiln dried poplar. I know poplar soaks up stain allot easier than hard wood.

The aprons on my final GC I, that surround the ball box have 7 or 8 layers.

The aprons are maple and they are easily stripped. That apron wood is so hard. I mixed red mahogany and cherry stains. Rather than wipe on and then wipe off, I elected to paint the stain on and then allow it to dray for a few days. I then coated the aprons with multiple coats of a hard lacquer. That was 20 years ago. I am happy with the results.

I brought the Sherwin-WIlliams paint formula for white to my Sherwin-Williams store and didn't make out so well. I was told the product was no longer available but they could convert the code. The attached pictures show what I received. I will return and see whether they made a mistake or if anything can be done to get a correct color match.

Purple Haze!

Not such a bad color...unless you're expecting white!

Good luck.

Without a doubt, my aprons are poplar as is the frame. The only maple pieces I saw during the restoration of my table were the end pieces of the pedestals.

Ian, green to you, sir, for this very helpful thread.

I've had my GC1 painted all 4 orig colors at one time or another, currently in tangerine. You can see in the first pic the table going from gold to tangerine. I used Behr paints from Home Depot and used brushes and small rollers and everything came out great each time with no noticeable brush marks.

Notice I've also changed the color of the matching GC cue racks which is very easy to do, the back panel is masonite and is held in place with maybe a dozen or so small screws so removing for paint is simple.

I also matched the color on the atomic clock each time.

best,
brian kc
