Gold Crown Two

Sunday came and went:) Did you get the table? What did you end up doing with the setup? How do you like it? Lets see some pictures:)

Ok so I am going to disagree with the conses here. Everyone wants to run 100, so the big push for 5 inch pockets. Hey let's go for 200 and make the pockets 6 inch??? Where does it end. Is the game really about long runs only? How about pocketing skills and pattern play. My view is pool skills are improving and all games are moving to tighter pockets. IMO 5 inch is a bucket and I am not a pro (highest run 34). If I can't hit the ball straight, I don't deserve to pocket the ball. Let's not forget that pockets were bigger when tables were slower. They were hitting balls harder and little forgiveness was due. Now the table and balls are quicker. An easy stroke moves the balls around very easily. IMO opinion 4.75 is about as large as it should go. My table is 4 5/8. Are any of the big tournaments played on 5 inch pockets? I doubt it, but could be wrong. Don't you want to measure yourself against the pros and play what they play on?

Just my 3 cents.

I ended up going with 4 5/8 inch. My high runs so far are 48-54 @ 55. I will post when I break 60:-). Thank you for your input...

Great table & great choice on pocket size. 4-1/2" & smaller is a bit too snug for 14.1 and anything close to 5" is too loose. I would have recommended 4-5/8" to 4-3/4" for optimal 14.1 play.

Mark:

How do you get the balls to stick to the cloth with the table laying on its side like that? Velcro? :p

Just kidding (I know the picture is rotated). A very beautiful table for sure, and I'm sure it's a blast to play on!

Thanks, sorry for the sideways picture:-)...

table nearly finished but up and playing

It's about standards, without which pool will continue to be considered a sham. ;)

The BCA spells things out clearly:

It's been nearly six weeks since delivery. I have taken my time thoroughly cleaning the table frame and all parts, wire-brushed all fasteners plus re-painting the aprons (original blue). I did apply the thicker pocket facings (see page one of this thread). The finished pocket size meets minimum BCA specs as Poolmouse linked. Green Simonis 760 and 4.875" at the corners, the table plays just like my old GCI. On Thursday the bed/rail cloth was installed. This weekend I carefully set the rails and castings. I took serveral hours to shim the castings as near flush to rail tops as possible (quite a job). The long rails lined up beautifully. Table speed is bit more than 4 lengths up and down; the original cushions turned out to be good as new. I am going to test-play for a few days before I attach the apron/skirt system to make sure all is good. I hope to achieve final assembly this week. I couldn't be happier once again being a vintage GC owner; the table build has been thus far flawless.

Thanks for all the great feedback guys, it's much appreciated!! I'm pretty much going to be using my table to practice straight pool runs. It sounds like 5 inch pkts gives me the best chance to run a 100. I can run 50 fairly consistantly on 4 1/2 inch pkts. Hopefully I can run a 100 on the 5 inch pkts. I know I will have to play my patterns well to make that run, so I'm not expecting my pkts to hand me a 100 ball run on a silver platter:-). It's just a goal of mine. I am so impressed by people who can make big runs in SP because I know how tough it is by making countless tries. It has definately improved my overall game for sure. When I first came back to pool after a pretty long lay off I only practiced straight pool by myself for 4 months. I didn't play anyone. I won around 5 or 6 local 9 ball tournaments when I started competing again. I felt so in stroke at the table, it was amazing. I think it was from hitting all those balls for those months. I even won a 9 ball tournament while John Schmidt was watching the finals from the rail. I was glad not to choke in front of him, because I have a lot of respect for his game and wanted to do well with him watching. Shoot straight everybody and as soon as I make a run that's decent, I will post it to be critiqued. There is so much knowledge on these forums I really appreciate all the information that players share....Good Luck All:-)

If you run 50s fairly consistantly its just a matter of time you will hit the 100. I play on 4inch pockets and want to run a 100 on them I have ran a 100/ 12 times with two monster runs but both were on 5 inch pockets Dont make the pockets bigger make your game stronger I would rather run 80 on tight pockets then run 150 on buckets IMHO

That's so impressive, 12 100 ball runs!! I agree with everything you're saying here. When my ending pattern comes together, it's a great feeling, even when I don't make a decent number. My pattern play is getting better, I just need to continue to improve on my cueball control, so I don't have to change the plan as often:)
