Did anyone play in the golden 8-ball back in the 80-90's? Best pool hall I ever played in. David Lee was the owner.

Golden Eight Ball long closed, like Clicks, Six Shooters, Northern Lounge, Alexanders, Pappy's, Uncle Charlie's, and too many more little Bars, and Pool Rooms in the Valley of the Sun that were Pool Places, that were killed by the Recession, Rating System, NO Smoking Laws, and NEW TOUGHT DUI Laws.

It wasn't 'killed' by any of those reasons....

When did it actually close and why?

Ah! The 'ol Golden 8.
That drug-infested, prostitution-going, also-fighting, steroid-using (the bouncers mostly), and BUSY pool hall.

BUT, this was also a true pool player's room.
TONS of action, road players would often come in.
Ronnie Allen, CJ Wiley, Beenie Weenie, Dennis Hatch, and The Earthquake all came through here.

The Rumor Mill has it that the room closed on account of "underage-something"—not sure, but not good.
I think it closed around '93 or '94.

Now, the above speaks to the room on Indian School across from Wendy's.
The Golden 8 Ball USED to be down the road in a strip mall.
Now THAT place was truly old school.

DOES ANYONE HERE REMEMBER THAT PLACE? (There was a Jack-in-the-Crack in the parking lot).
Talk to me.

I was a college student and don't remember all of that. Just a nice big, clean room with good tables and good food. I do remember it being a little shady back where the bar tables were though.

The area is between I-17 & Grand Avenue, and it is still a nasty area I drive through from time to time on the way to the VA Hospital, or Shoot the Bull house of Cue.

The Golden Eight Ball maybe be gone but the element that was found there, is there including the drug dealer, and professional ladies.

Lets be diplomatic, and say the City of Phoenix Chamber of Commerce is not send a photographer to the area, to show that side of Phoenix to any potential out of town guest looking for attraction to visit, or a reason to host some convention in Phoenix Metro Area.

Original room was in the Mr Lucky's shopping center. Then moved down the street. (around 29th) years later.

It was THE spot back in the 80's-90's if you played pool. Danny D. was one of the house pros. Constant action in there. All the big name players came thru.

There were a couple shootings that caused it's closing. After those, the police cracked down hard and heavy.

I believe that was the site of the famous Ronnie Allen v/s Danny D. Ten K One Hole Match Jay Helfert has DVD for sale of.

The Original was not in the Mr Lucky's parking lot but next door to Graham Central Station. There was a shooting the last day it was to be open,New Years Eve1994 I think. Old man Bob put a Teflon bullet through the heart of some yahoo who just needed killin'. He was released that night and no charges were ever filed.

What's a great pool room without a bit of depravity?

What's a great pool room without a bit of depravity? That's right, a boring one. We had some big money matches in those days....Roger Griffis was also a regular player.

I worked and played in the Golden 8 Ball for many years. At one time it was one of the best pool halls around. A big room, nice bar, tons of 9 foot Gold Crowns. bar tables, full size snooker table, carom table, full kitchen, pro shop, game room and people of all kinds. I have plenty of stories from those days.

In the early days of the Indian School & 27th Ave location they had the help wear black pants and tux shirts. They were always wiping down the tables and the place was amazing. It was sad watching it slowly decline over the years but it provided a great place to meet, play and sweat action.

Hello Brian,

We played many times. I went to ASU and played a lot of tournaments at your place. My friends called me JB in the poolroom.

You were and, I am sure, still a very good player. I remember you shot a lot with your bridge pinky in the air and I believe a mostly dark brown cue.

Jay

CJ, Roger was there quite a bit also. We have a mutual friend as well, Mr. Bickford out of Columbia.

ASU Jay! Met a girl here in Phoenix who said she was from your area. I asked her if she knew who ASU Jay was. She was flabbergasted that I knew you. Hope you are still hitting them good.

Hello, I play a little, got hooked on 3 Cushion five years ago, now pretty much only playing one-pocket.
My curiosity has to ask who this girl was. Maybe initials will give her away. Thanks for the post.

Ah JB!

I remember you we had a couple of match ups! I am happy to report that when I do play my pinky stays firmly on the table these. :-) Shot with a Southwest cue back in the day.

I hope you are doing well!

Hey Bryan,

I remember maybe a possible wrist position similar to mccready's but not as pronounced. Mike G and big Tim as the bouncer. Lol those were the days.
