I'm thinking of moving back to the US, after a bunch of years abroad, and I'd like to be in a city with a strong pool scene. Any recommendations?

From all I know, which isnt too much, San Francisco/Bay Area, but then of course theres likely no way you could afford a place to live there....
then again you are living in Van City :p
Reno is hit or miss, couple three rooms, but nothing really fantastic =\

NY area seems to be big you have joss tour dominak tour, that play in and around new york, new jersey, conn, mass, penn. Alot of good players and rooms on those two tours

If you wanna stay outta the big urban areas (not sure what you are used to) there are many little midwest pockets (pardon the pun) of strong pool play....like the Quad Cities (Rock Island & Moline IL - Bettendorf & Davenport IA). Just an example.

Kansas City ain't too bad either. Plenty of leagues and local tournies. Some action too, if that is your thing.

Yeah, I like the SC area. YOu can get to FL/ NC/ GA easy...I am sure there is somwething to the West too!

In the southeast, I would think Raleigh, NC and Atlanta GA would both get high marks.

Texas

Of course I live here , but there are a lot of tournaments and pool halls in TX.

In my area alone, there are 3 pool halls and at least3 or 4 bars with 6 or more tables. Tournaments are Mon, Tue, Fri Sat and Sun. Leagues are Sun thru Thur.

If that isn't enough, Austin has a strong league and tournament scene - 45 minutes away.
Dallas and Houston are a couple of hours away , also good leagues and tournaments ( C/O Rackem Zachem, Kennen and Big Doc and Kim White)
Waco is 45 minutes with a couple of good pool halls and a strong weekly and monthly Tournament ( c/o Big Truck)

They also have the Fast Eddies Tour with monthly tournaments throughout the state and region (C/O Ironman and Stones)

If you can't find what you want here, you probably don't know what you're looking for :D

I have to mention Los Angeles. There are dozens of good rooms in and around town. I've played in the area more than 25 years and I consistently run into great pool talent all the time, from people I've never seen before. Some rooms in the area include -

Hard Times, Bellflower
Hollywood Billiards, Hollywood
House of Billiards, Santa Monica
Danny K's, Orange
Golden Cue (I think that's the name), El Monte
Stix (I think that's the name), Rancho Cucamonga
Sal Butera's room (forgot the name), Moorpark

Hang around these pool rooms and you'll have plenty of opportunities to sharpen up your game.

already said but anywhere in the New Jersey--New York area every town it seems has a good pool hall

God Blessed Texas.....

AUSTIN,TX . You will be within 3 hrs of $50+ tournaments every weekend.

Weekly tournaments aren't that great though.

WACO,TX. My stomping ground 1.2 hrs north of Austin Added money weekly tournaments on Sun,Mon,Tues,Wed & Thurs. Monthly $50 mid-level tourny and within 3 hrs of $50+ monthly events.

HOUSTON,TX 30-40 $50+ Tournaments a year. Home to numerous pros and several good action spots. These people never have to leave the streets! LOL Also strong league base.

Dallas-Ft Worth (DFW)
- 20-30 $30+ tournaments a year and weekly events almost every night! Strong league base

When I lived in West Palm all the NY and FL guys would talk about how great Houston is for pool.

Gotta go with Houston-

I have at least 5 pool halls (not counting bars with boxes) within 20 minutes:

Big Daddy's- 6 min
Slick Willie's- 10 min
Legends- 12 min
Breakers- 13 min
Fast Eddy's-20 min

Lots of players, friendly pros, and custom cue makers

Austin rocks. Best weekly tourney at G Cue in my opinion. Over 30 players, no green fees & lots of free practice time.
