Good gambling books

The only other place I used to go to was SPINETTI'S Gambling Supplies; but, that was only because they had a HUGE selection of collectible Cheques/Chips and Dice from closed casinos from all over the place, and going way way back. Spinetti's also sold books and equipment too; but all my trade for that was spent at GBS/GBC.

Spinetti's is located very close - about a block or two away - from where Gambler's General Store is. Is that the place you mean? - GJ
Did you ever run across any Gin books?

I’ve been looking since you asked and I can’t find anything. I’ve asked a dozen people I know who play-old guys 70+ and can’t come up with anything. My eyes are open, hopefully I can find someone who has a stash of books.

Didn’t come out well….it’s Oswald Jacoby and Leo Cohen.
A good gin player gave me these two books in the 80s….he said these would take me to the next level.

A wise friend, may he rest in peace, once told me this:

"Gambling is a business. If you're not in the business, it's best to stay away."

On the other hand, a pretty good local player told me: "Believe me, when I play for money, it's not gambling."

Your choice, folks....

It's not in print anymore and you would be hard pressed to find many as it is leather bound and cost $200 when published. I've been told it's hands down the best book on gin ever.

“Blackjack as a business” was a good book as well. Helped me a lot with gambling when I was coming up.

I’m in Vegas now, drove out from LA today. I couldn’t find my gambling books, they are in a box somewhere in my house. Long story.

I’ll remember some more. If I have time ima go to the Gamblers books store on Main St here. I just drove past it. They moved to the other side of the street since I last looked(years ago).

And that "Long Story" usually began for most of us with the dreaded first words of: "We are gather together today, to join this man and this woman, in holy matrimony...", and some time after that, your "stuff" ends up in a box in the basement, garage, or out in the backyard shed. - GJ

Just to mention a few more obvious pool books:

Grady's Bet High and Kiss Low (Best title ever if nothing else)
John Grissim's Billiards
R. A. Dyer's Hustler Days and The Hustler and the Champ

and then IMO the best of them all:
Freddy the Beard's The "Encyclopedia" of Pool Hustlers

I moved 3 years ago. Piss poor excuse but about ½ my books are still in boxes. And I have the space to put them on a shelf. I’ve just been lazy.

I’m gonna drop by the book store here, I’m downtown at Golden Nugget for a few nights-like a tourist. Feels weird. But kinda fun. Anyways the book store is a mile or 2 from here, I know right where it is at.

I’ve been working on my 3 card Monte game, I love dealing that game. Always good fun.

I’ll bounce to the book store and have a look and report back. I’m back in LA in a few days alone for Thanksgiving, I should dig out my books. I did post some chalk pics the other day. I dug it out. 100 year old chalk-pretty cool. I’ve had it 25 years I’d guess.

Best

Love to stay at The GN or The 4 Queens (next door); but my heart and action/play truly belongs to the El Cortez. It's down Fremont, but on the other side of LV Blvd; just after the 'The Experience' ends. I'm definitely a 'Downtown' kind of guy; and, really not into the Strip at all. If you've never been to the El Cortez before, do yourself the favor. It's like going back in time, with very, very low tourist oriented 'flash, wow, and pizzazz Disco Casino' factor. Instead, the El Cortez focuses on Gamblers and gambling - well-heeled to the Local with a short bank roll, all play side-by-side. Hint: Great 'old school' Men's Traditional Barber Shop on the 2nd floor of the hotel. If you go, poke your head into the El Cortez's 'Fiesta Room', which is their under utilized banquet room; which I always thought would make the most perfect conversion to a 10 table 'Action Room' for pool players. If you do check it out, let me know your thoughts. - GJ
