Good gambling books

Love to stay at The GN or The 4 Queens (next door); but my heart and action/play truly belongs to the El Cortez. It's down Fremont, but on the other side of LV Blvd; just after the 'The Experience' ends. I'm definitely a 'Downtown' kind of guy; and, really not into the Strip at all. If you've never been to the El Cortez before, do yourself the favor. It's like going back in time, with very, very low tourist oriented 'flash, wow, and pizzazz Disco Casino' factor. Instead, the El Cortez focuses on Gamblers and gambling - well-heeled to the Local with a short bank roll, all play side-by-side. Hint: Great 'old school' Men's Traditional Barber Shop on the 2nd floor of the hotel. If you go, poke your head into the El Cortez's 'Fiesta Room', which is their under utilized banquet room; which I always thought would make the most perfect conversation to a 10 table 'Action Room' for pool players. If you do check it out, let me know your thoughts. - GJ

I love the El Cortez. Always have. I own a 82 door apartment building 300 yards away from it. It’s a bit rough and wouldn’t want to stay there.

Downtown has always been my favorite part of Vegas. My favorite joint was the Shoe. I went there last night snd some of the original stuff was still there. But the vibe was 100% gone from when Binion owned it.

Was amazing how busy it was last night, a random Wednesday night with nothing going on in town and the joints were all packed. I can’t remember ever seeing them all so busy ever-unless it’s a holiday weekend or Super Bowl or Final 4 or some big trade show.

Smells like weed everywhere now.

Things sure are different now.

I read an article about 6 months ago I’d guess. Anyways they took Jackie Gauns (spelled wrong) suite at the el Cortez out and turned it into rooms or something. He lived there for years. His son Michael owns the south point and the a lot route at the airport. Deep old vegas ties & $. It’s an interesting read. Look for the article on LVRJ.com

Yes, back when Terry Caudill (great guy) bought the 4Q's and Binion's, it seems he really wasn't sure what he wanted to do with The Horseshoe; however, he was totally certain with the 4Q's. Consequently, it felt like Binion's went through an identity-crisis for a time. No clue what it's like today, as I haven't be out to LV in 10 years.

Yes, Jackie Gaughan was A SAINT. On top of being an awesome host, I had been told he kept The Western open at a loss purely for the benefit of the low-income locals, so they had a place to hang-out AND get a decent nutritious daily meal everyday for some ridiculously low price of just a couple of bucks.

A true Gentleman. - GJ

My grandmother was the personal assistant to the Clark County Commissioner for years. I love listening to her talk about Vegas and it’s glory days. She saw a lot working in that office. Can’t remember the commissioners name. Bruce something…

It was always so awesome to visit her. She got some amazing comps and tickets to shows, dinners and so on. Then the campaign laws and what not got really strict on taking gifts/comps.

Pretty amazing she worked her way that far up. Just a high school graduate from a tiny town in Wisconsin.

Anyway. I am the one rambling now.

Nick- impressed with his grandma

The Western was a block or 2 from the apt building I own. Most all the tenants would go there to eat, we only have a few units with kitchens. He was a great guy. I’ve spoke to Michael his son a couple times on the phone-I don’t know him. I have a friend who’s 84 who knows him very well & I was just on 3 way calls.

I miss the version of Vegas I moved to in 91.

A wise friend, may he rest in peace, once told me this:

"Gambling is a business. If you're not in the business, it's best to stay away."

On the other hand, a pretty good local player told me: "Believe me, when I play for money, it's not gambling."

Your choice, folks....

I got a kick out of Lee Marvin educating the settler's son in the movie Paint Your Wagon. He warned the boy against playing cards with Rotten Luck Willie. "Sir, I don't gamble!" A great aside under his breath from Lee, "neither does Rotten Luck Willie."

A few years into playing pool I realized I was over $10,000 ahead talking about around 1970 dollars. After that I was careful to think "wagering" instead of "gambling". Only once was I to make a huge bet that would have been really painful to lose. There was no way I was going to bet enough in a night to put me into the red betting on pool so I was pretty fearless when somebody tried to highroll me. While talk was cheap, few would put up even a hundred a game and far from highrolling me, that made me feel like a tiger coming after raw meat.

We've stayed there a few times. The rooms have been remodeled and the price is right. Plus free parking and no resort fee! They have an excellent coffee shop as well. Good eats!

Bally's is upgrading the Horseshoe now and will be putting it's original name back up there (It's been Bally's for years now). They just opened up the new poker room, right where the old one used to be. Made my first big poker score there in my very first WSOP tournament. Finished fifth in the Limit Hold'em for 35K. Got paid in cash and got the hell out of Vegas quick!

Billy, you have 3 there I don't have.

I’ve looked high and low. I can’t find it. Still trying 😃

My dear Brother Eric, I am going to assume you are NOT posting this message while using the urinal in the men's restroom; as Mrs Fatboy will be quite cross upon your return, if this is the result from your trip to Vegas! If so, I think you've taken the phrase about things staying in Vegas a bit too literally! :ROFLMAO: - GJ
