Good Kuck Linda

Linda,

Suggest to Jay or Peg or whoever is running the tournament that there will be no smoking at the tables. If the smokers need to smoke, they'll have to use their one break to do it. And they should get used to it because it's only a matter of time before all the states enact a smoking ban.

I do this at my events in states that still allow indoor smoking and it does cut down on the smoke.

Thanks everyone! I stayed up all night last night since I had a lot of work to finish before I took off and didn't doze very long on the plane. After renting the car, checking in, and eating dinner, we went to Capone's to practice and just got back.

We will be playing on the Gold Crowns, not the Diamonds. They are fast, but not too fast. The pockets are perfect, not too small, and not too big. ;)

Somehow, I hurt my good leg today as soon as I walked in. I hope it is better by tomorrow, but I had to hobble around the table and it got tiring. Had a slow start, but then got a table by myself and started shooting better.

The bad part is that I have grown accustomed to a smoke-free environment and the smoke was thick in the room. My eyes started watering right away. My lungs burned. I brought some nice clothes and I really don't even want to wear them there. :(

I have to go shower the odor out of my hair! Thanks for the good kuck wishes. ;)

Edit: Guess who was on my flight? Jesse Jackson! I was on the escalator on the stair right behind him.

Ummm could we fill in the blanks on the WPBA bracket page now? Nevermind ic the draw is 8:30 tonight. Johnnyt

OK, I will, although I am the outsider here and don't want to rock any boats. There may be native smokers here who aren't used to not smoking and may resent the suggestion, but I don't feel like breathing in hydrogen cyanide and other toxins while I am playing, lol.

Thanks, Barbara. :)

Johhnyt will you be watching the tournament? Since Linda is traveling across the country to come to FLA I thought I would drive a couple hours just to meet her, and visit with Melinda, Heather and Roberta. Any other AZ ers going to be watching on Saturday? If so I'll see you there!

Actually Linda, since the WPBA is presenting this event, it should proceed under WPBA rules at their tournaments - no smoking venues.

I talked to Peg and Jay and they are going to make it non-smoking at the tables, so that is going to be a lot better. Don't know about the sweators directly above us in the bar, but something is better than nothing. ;)

OK, Barbara, it's cleaned out for you and ready to go!

I got lucky and got a bye. I am dreading my draw after that, because it is usually one of the strongest players every time I get a bye...but I am certainly not complaining! There are about 30 players that I know of that could win this thing...a bunch that I thought were already pro, but aren't yet.

Nicole Mancini and Sharon Wiese are here, which was surprising to me too.

I am a little concerned because I am playing SOOOOOO bad in practice! Am I too nervous? I don't feel like I am. So I'm not sure what's up. I just hope the Queen shows up tomorrow.

I met Melinda, who is very nice, but not 9bllvr yet. I play at 1 and my roommate plays at 11, so we will be there at 10 and I will be practicing on the other side..on the Diamonds.

Linda,

You'd be surprised how often a bad practice session equates to playing a good match. Maybe because you go in with no expectations.

Just keep your head down and concentrate/focus on the bullseye. Keep making balls and good things happen. One of your strong points is your concentration.

One other thing, don't overhit (try to do too much) on any shots. Do a little less rather than a little more. Better control and fewer errors. You'll get there.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, I really appreciate it. I'll try my hardest.

I did edit my last post to say we are getting there at 10, not 1. ;)

You go Linda! Wish I could give you some rep for good luck, but it says I can't till I spread it out more!

I can't give you back any more, for wishing me luck, either. :p

Well folks, it was a sad day in Spring Hill. :( The Queen did not make an appearance except in practice against May-Han for a couple hours over on the slow-cloth tight Diamond tables. I played great. I could stroke the balls instead of pitty-pattying on the Gold Crowns. Of course, practicing on slower cloth was a little detrimental when I got back over to the tournament tables. I swear, that measle ball kept rolling another 5-6" after you thought it was gonna stop.

It started out with our own Mary Hopkin losing hill-hill against Rachael Abbink. She totally should have won, but got tentative on the 7 ball, with the 9 hanging (no 8 ball). She could have stroked the ball, gone back and forth and still had a good shot on the 9, but I guess she tried to control whitey and it didn't work out. She may have also felt a little guilt when she got lucky and accidentally locked Rachael up to get ball in hand on the 6.

One by one, I saw my compatriots fall, with only Cathy Metzinger still on the winner's side. By 2:00 when my match finally came around, I felt ready to go after practicing with May-Han.

I came out of the gate good, 2-0 against Stephanie. But mental errors just kept plaguing me. For instance, I was stretched out for the 9, with my hand at the very end of my cue, thinking, maybe I ought to get the bridge, but I can just roll this in. NOT! She played well, but I had every chance to win.

Then I played Malea Haacke. Same thing. Three times, I missed the whole ball! In my defense, on one of them, I was trying to thin the edge of a ball, otherwise it was a scratch, and I couldn't see the whole ball to do anything else. Gotta get the eyes fixed! That was my second foul after a scratch on a successful kick. Then she locked me up tight and got me on a 3 foul.

The second time I missed the whole ball was when I had a long shot and I juiced the ball with a ton of english. I had stood up over this shot a long time, trying to figure out what to do, because there really was no reward for making it, because it was tough to get back up table for the next ball and there was no easy safe, due to intervening balls. In other words, if I didn't hit the ball to make it, there were balls on both sides of it that I would have run into with the cueball. In retrospect, I should have just hung it and let her worry about getting back up table, lol.

Another time, she hung the 8 deep in the jaws and left me behind the 9, too long to jump. I was worried about following it in, but not the way it did. :( I masse'd the ball and it veered right around the 8 without even touching it  and dropped into the pocket. She was afraid of moving the 8 while trying to retrieve the cueball!

Just stupid stuff like that. The Queen never once showed up, more like the lowest fief in the kingdom. I don't mind losing if I play my game, but I never came with it. I am sorry I couldn't pull my head out of my butt, but it was lodged pretty deeply. I am especially sorry, because Poolhall Maven and Nostroke were there watching and I didn't show them anything like a good game. Oh well, on to the next tournament. :o

Btw, Melinda played really well, and I finally met 9ballvr, whom I had always thought her name was 9ball VR. Instead, I found out it was 9 ball Lover. :p

I didn't see anyone running racks, so I guess it was just a matter of who could adjust to the conditions the best, and it wasn't I. My roommate, Liz Cole, did win 3 matches on the B side and should have beaten Vanessa Seaver. At double hill, she missed a straight in 7. It's weird what pressure does to you. In my case, it may have been pressure to perform. Now I know what men go through in the bedroom, lol. :p

Anyway, there is a lesson in there somewhere; I'm sure I will find it. So far, I have had a great time catching up with new and old friends, cheering some on and commiserating with others. Good luck to the remaining players!

Sorry to hear it didn't go so well, Linda. Shake it off, and move on to the next stop, and attack like a pitbull!:D

I know how you feel. As of late I have been playing pretty sporty. Then I went and played Friday night...it was like I was in someone else's body! I couldn't buy a friggin' pocket. I didn't feel off, and I kept my head down...but something was definitely awry...lol. Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow night in Woolley.:)

Hang in there....the Queen will give court in due time!:D
