Got a problem with cue.........

I have a custom that has roll out. I cant pin down what is the cause of it. The butt section rolls straight no lift at joint and the shaft seems to roll well also. but when put together the tip lifts slightly. I know its not the shaft i can put it on another cue and it rolls fine. I have another cue by the same cuemaker with exact same specs at joint. I can take that shaft which is dead straight on the other cue and put it on this one and the same thing happens. I refaced the joint on the butt same thing. I have a Tiger X that is slightly smaller than joint on butt and a Olivier shaft that is smaller both roll straight when on the cue. It seems like it has to be the pin that is causing the problem. How can i tell if the pin is causing the problem? whether it is exactly centered or slightly bent. I have a Hightower deluxe but all i do is ferrules tips tenons joint collars butt caps etc.

Hi,

Try putting the shaft and butt between centers and spin a a low speed. See if there is a bump.

If other shafts are rolling true when attached on the cue, while it could be possible I don't think that there is a problem with the pin. It could be that the bored hole in the shaft or that the insert is not straight.

You also did not mention what type of pin / thread pitch this cue has. If the cue has a wood to wood joint (no insert) by facing it sometimes the depth of the bored and threaded hole will become to shallow. Take a depth reading on the bored hole in the shaft, and then measure the length of your pin. If this is the problem all you have to do to correct it is bore the hole a little deeper and retapp.

If you determine that the hole is not straight or the insert is not straight all you need to do is bore the hole over sized plug it and then drill and retap the new hole.

Sorry Craig forgot to mention it is a 3/8x10 wood to wood. Thanks for the info I will check the length of pin and depth of shaft. Would you think it is possible that the taper of the stock shafts is causing this they seem little fat few inches from the joint?
 
If the pin has a pilot, chuck up on the buttsleeve and place the joint end on a steady rest bearing with collet. Indicate the collar to make sure it's running close to true. Then indicate the pilot.
If it doesn't have a pilot, make threaded delrin tube.
Indicate that threaded after threading it on the pin.
 
Is the joint pin in the suspect cue pretty long? Longer than the other cue?

The pin could be bottoming out slightly at the end of the shaft hole.

Measure the depth of the hole in the shaft and the length of the pin, if they are close then you might have to bore the hole in the shaft a little deeper.

Also the pins might be the same length and the hole just isnt quite deep enough.

Just a possibility.

Thanks guys i will check everything tomorrow evening. I hope it is just the pin bottoming out.
 
Set the cue to be running true at the but end and coller end. You can then place a piece of 0.010 shim between the pin and you dti.This will show if the od of the pin is conncentric to the handle.
If you can run your carrinage at 10 tpi, you can run a dit in the root of the thread as well.
I see bent pins from cues that people use to break with and have the shaft flex on the table afterward.
 
Sounds like a joint facing or pin problem.

Nice thing about a custom cue is that you can usually contact the cue maker about problems.
Most will stand behind their cues and are willing to remedy problems for a very reasonable price.

If all else fails ... give him a call.
