Getting Better

Lost my first match of the night and came out of the losers bracket to win. Had to double dip the guy in the finals. It was fun to come out of the losers side because you get to keep playing faster between matches.

But I have a couple questions. Would you rather be in the winners side and wait or losers side and play faster. And also, would you rather play a true double elimination final or play a longer race in the final match.

Would love to hear some input from you guys

If I am on the winners side I would rather play the double elimination. If I am on the loser side I like to play the longer race.

I've never won one in 28 years, lol

But thinking about it, I'd rather play back to back on the losers side, waiting around I'd get board and might forget to go play or distracted. See this is why I never won, I ain't played in very many, just a handful. I like to play on my schedule so I look for action.

Congrats, you double dipped, that's the nuts, must feel good, ill never know lol

If you're talking about a small weekly tournament with 20-30 players I would rather stay home and watch tv. I absolutely love to play pool but sitting around waiting isn't my idea of playing pool. I knew I was totally burnt out on these things when I found myself sitting in the hot seat and leaving early with 2nd place money or splitting the pot with second even though they have virtually no chance of double dipping me just because I'm tired. I used to love the thrill of winning but that wears off after you've done it a bunch.

I would rather be on the winners side.
I think having to beat me twice is a psychological advantage for me.
I stay in stroke by practicing while I am waiting to play, and also watching who I might play and look for their weakness.

The local weekly tournaments around here are very small. If they reach 20 they're doing pretty good. If I'm going to lose, and I usually do, I prefer to win a couple of matches on the A side. The races are short and anything can happen, especially on the B side. The wait for the hot seat winner can be some time depending how the TD is running the tournament.

A true DE tournament would be my preference. But since most of the tournaments are during the work week I can fully understand people wanting to get home at a decent hour. Me, I don't care too much since I'm retired but I don't care for the late hours on these small tournaments. There's no reason to be out until midnight or so for a 12 - 15 person event!:):)

Well apparently I'm not as good as you. I enjoy any tournament.

It does feel good to get a win. And I think I like the loser side a little better. I stayed at the table for like 6 straight matches. I really got in a good groove

For me winner's side is always better. I don't really play for fun in tournaments I only ever go to win money as it's my only 'job' right now.

The less matches you have to play before winning money the better as far as I am concerned.

There are a few local tournaments near me that happen weekly with the payout being a little over $100 for 1st and it usually gives me spending money for the next week or goes towards a bill. To be honest without these tournaments I would not be able to make my monthly bills so it's all motivation to win.

If I want to play for fun I usually practice or play in league.

Sitting sucks...an 4:30am come real quick..an I don't win enough to meet the bills..I really enjoy playing..that said..I prefer the longer race reguard of what side I'm on.

Good for you on having a couple local tourneys near you that survive. It sounds like you cash in the top 3 often enough to count on the money. Around me, when that happens, the tourney goes from 20 players to 12 players, to no tourney after a month or so.

the few times i did ok in a tourny I was on the losers side, same thing, i just kept playing. I cant just get up and play, sit 2-3 hours(what ever) and switch it back on, thats for JA he can do that very good. thats why i like action im in control of my time.

congrats again

The tournament that I won happens every Thursday. They also have one every Friday and Saturday. The Saturday tournament usually pays like 400 first place. The Friday is usually like 250. Thursday is not as strong but I'm still learning. I've only been playing about 3 years so it is perfect for me.

Actually, this post was more a question to zpele, who seemed to suggest there were a couple tourneys where he could almost count on the winnings to pay bills. My experience around here is when a place starts a tournament, it only lasts 4-5 weeks before people stop playing cuz the same guys are winning it all the time.

I like the winners side, I'm getting older and my stamina isn't there any more, and I get to drink beer and talk to people.

I was just saying that. The guy that runs the pool room will make you stop playing in a certain tournament you win to much. I like that he does that.

I've been there on both sides. It's good for business as it keeps people coming. But bad for the player if there isn't another option. If he has a tournament for the better players as well, it can work if there are enough of them around. But I've heard frustration from master players that there aren't enough tourneys for them.

Either or is good for me.........

Get in the losers i get that much more practice. That's why we play in these smaller weekly tournys anyway. Plus the fun.

Stay in the winners you have to get ready and play when your kind of cold. This is why many players lose that first match when they a the winner of the winners. Got to get down and focused right away.

Both ways serve a purpose. Kind of like sparing for the big one.

The only time you can practice being in a final match is when your there. Splitting in these small ones might seem like the right thing at the time but you are robbing yourself of valuable practice in a finals situation.

A friend of mine was at a state regional tourny. We got to the final and I had to beat him twice. He wanted to split in the worst way. There wasn't much money difference between first and second.

I told him NO. I came here to win. not come here and split. If we were going to do this we might as well have split with 8 players left. Now we could all get enough sleep for work tomorrow.

He had to work at 6:00AM and it was already 10:00. After his drive home and everything he would still only get a couple of hours of sleep.

I didn't have to work the next day. Plus it would be good practice for a bigger tourny next week which i won also.

I beat him twice and he acted like a little kid about it whining and crying to everyone that would listen.

I thought it was kind of funny. Bottom line he just hates to lose and he knew it was going to happen.

Oh well. Sucks to be him............

Let me clarify... I play in about 3 tournaments per week and usually only cash in one of them. This is usually enough to get me some extra cash but it in no way makes me the winner each week in any given tournament.

The area I live in has a good number of very strong players that are always a threat to cash in any given tournament and with handicaps even the lower players have a chance.

I think it's more about the way most people in my area approach the game- they take part in tournaments because they are competitive and when they don't win they take it as a challenge to come back the next week.
