Got sharked while gambling

yep! announcing anything with the word safe in the sentence when you're not playing safe is asking for trouble. that is if you don't clarify before you shoot.

it's your responsibility to ask the guy to move out of the way if he's in front of your shot

was this on a bar box? what were the stakes?

A brunswick 8 footer with champion cloth. The stakes? Lol the stakes was more along the line of bragging rights then the money as you can see.

His girl was watching the whole thing, I think that had a lot to do with not wanting to lose...

But he's done this before with no girl around to.

That guy that I mentioned that was watching the whole thing was telling me "just play your game".. just to give you insight into how annoying the dude was being.

I hate trying to bank those balls in against the grain. How do you normally go after those?? I usually just hit at em and hollar shlt.

Very very carefully, took about 30 seconds just to make sure i was lined up perfectly..

Sharking like that is only cheating if (a) one player is doing it and the other isn't and (b) the guy being sharked does not want it to happen. Two options:

(a) shark the guy back
(b) decide that you are going to 'give him some weight'; in your mind decide that he gets to talk while you shoot and move in your line of sight, and you have to ignore it. So long as you feel that you are in control of the situation (you are allowing him to try to shark you) and don't keep thinking that he is doing something unfair, you might find that it becomes surprisingly easy to deal with.

If this doesn't work and you lose, offer another bet to get it your $$ back - bet him he can't fit the 8 ball in his mouth. (Do not try this at home kids. Not easy to get it out again ...)

We weren't there, so you have to choose what to take from the many good responses. Some advice is universal to any situation (memikey).

Like Mullyman said, you gotta nip that sh*t in the bud. Only you can judge the severity of the situation and determine how much crap you are willing to take. It obviously bugged you enough to start a thread. Maybe you could have taken the guy off to the side where his girlfriend couldn't hear and said "hey man, you're crossing the line of acceptable sportsmanship. If you keep it up I will never want to play you again. It's your reputation, you only get one."

Everybody has different tolerances for sharking.

Over time I think we all develop our own "policies" as to how we deal with sharking. The better we deal with it, the better our winning % becomes.

did you get payed is the real question?

Today, this morning, I seen what getting sharked is really about. I mean for the first time, it really got in the way.

There have been times where an opponent was obviously being a pain, but not like this before.

First, he wouldn't shut up while I was shooting. Then he went in front of the pocket I was shooting at and pulled his crotch up just as I pulled the trigger... Now this got a little heated as I accused him in front of everybody of pulling some sh*t... He said "man you know I didn't do it on purpose"...

I don't know what to think about it. Part of me says he probably didn't but apart of me said he did it virtually unconciously. This guy is one of those that are constantly spitting sh*t out of their mouth to keep their confidence up and try to keep yours down ya know..

Then later on in the game two of my balls were sitting right in the pocket nearly touching. I shot one of them in and he tried to say that it grazed the other.. I watched it, i don't think so.. not to mention another guy backed me up that was watching saying he never saw it move.

This same game.. yes this all happened in just one game..i had to bank the 8 in against the grain for the win. He says some bs and i go "i could play a safe if I want".. I proceed to bank the 8 in and I look at him and he's expecting me to pay up.. im sittin there with this "wtf" face and say "What are you talking about? I just banked it in" him - "you said you were playing safe.." me - "NO i said I could play safe on it, banking wasn't my only option" he says some more bs I say something else.....

That was one of the lamest times i've ever had playing pool.

That's the thing is some people can't handle gambling , they get mad if they start losing , a friend of mine and me did a little race last tuesday and we had one of are other friends watch the match so no one would cheat or shark on another .

It turned out good we both played well and I ended up winning in the end we shook each others hand and went are own ways . It all depends who you play .

Man that brings back some memories. I was playing at a bar on league night and we were playing Valley rules. Afterward this guy wants to play a short race for 100 and I say OK. We get to hill hill and agreed ahead of time to play by bar rules which were Valley rules, but were also posted in HUGE letters on the wall.

Call pocket, No gambling, ROFL. I am on the 8 and call corner pocket. I shoot the 8 in and it grazes the side rail and goes in but doesn't touch any other ball. He says you lose, you didn't call 1 rail? WHAT?????

I had the same thing pulled on me that I didn't call a rail or "bank" as the ball hit the rail going in. Also hit the far facing inside the pocket and was told the same thing thing or that it wasn't clean.

The bad part about the whole deal is the players are usually locals that can't play but always tie up the tables with their buddies. They will keep making up rules and end up getting "their table" back because they make it a bad situation to play in. It gets tiring to sit there waiting for your turn to come up again as they keep stalling by trying to do 4 rail banks, kicks, 3 ball combos and etc.

another sharking story.....

I can't stand that mess, I once played a guy giving him the world playing one-hole and he just sharked me ALL night. It didn't phase his A** kicking one bit but it really aggravated me, and I knew the guy!!! Needless to say after playing all night he wants one more game for a hundred his last barrel, I'm fed up and want to finish him off. Just so happens we both need one ball and I had left my ball next to my hole and left him a long tight cut shot, I was walking away from the table with my back turned and had his stroke timed and just dropped my cue on the carpet. All I heard was the sound of CANK....he miscued....I laughed and fired my ball into the hole and told him thats what you get for being such a d*#k all night long, he just couldn't believe it, his jaw was on the floor.

I don't ever play with tactics like that, but believe me two can play that game, as my "friend" found out that night. He basically burned his own bridge for ettiquite, so to me it was justtified...I mean in a dog eat dog world its either me or you right????? Would you guys have done the same or diff??

Good answers to all. Try my approach.

When he gets down to shoot, the next time, try slicing him under the armpit with a K-bar. He'll get it, and I promise he'll think twice before using his techniques again.

Is the K-Bar your anti-sharking weapon of choice? Enquiring minds want to know Ninjameister!

Bar rules are fun and usually easy money.....honestly, if you are in a bar, expect people squatting in front of the pocket, yelling, talking, and just being loud - it's a bar folks....

If the guy really gets your goat, just don't play him.....you gotta look at the risk - is the money really worth putting up with him.....if it is, just get used to it and keep your wallet fat :D

That, or hire Crawfish.....that guy has crazy knife skills.....he's like the pool samurai.....but deadlier....

Better get a professional to do that!

This is probably the best route, since any willy-nilly slicing of someone's armpit risks severing the Brachial Artery (lethal -- this artery is even larger than the Carotid Arteries in the neck!) or the Median Nerve (paralyzing). "Better get a professional to do that the right way." :p

The K-Bar is the best knife made IMO. Crawfish has good taste!

Yup, Kabar knives are the cream of the crop -- choice of the Navy Seals, and simply the best. I still have the Kabar penknife that my father gave to me on my 8th birthday -- this thing's been through a lot and indestructable.

Pool is so exciting. None like it out there.

Sharker: "Play again?"
Crawfish: "Sure! Double over or nothing." fffwwwiitttt. "You lose."

Actually I decided to knife him in the back after telling him i got his back during a game of scotch doubles... hey i got his back right? ( didn't happen )

This is what I did and normally what I always do ( b )

Let them pull their sh*t all they want, makes the win even sweeter.

Yes I got payed btw.

Glad you got paid, and kudos paksat for taking it down given the jagoff you were playing.

May I ask: What useful info might you take from the responses in this thread?

I have a different veiw

I'd ask him to play everyday and beat him senseless until he tells you he wont play you again. Overcoming treachery is one of the many aspects of pool, its everywhere and your reputation will be one of a warrior.

Voo~~~practiced at a friends house that had triplet boys, one on my back, one on my leg and one bouncing on the couch to fade the shark!!

I mean, obviously, I know how to handle the situation without escalating it.

The guy that pointed those 3 things out about not even mentioning playing safe was good advice and i'll remember to never even say a word about that again.

All the other input is much appreciated.

I'm not well known on the forum so I guess it's cool to say that i'm just trying to show I can be professional about something like this.
