As most of use who work on tables do , I drive all over the place. Do you use a gps/nav system? What kind? How is it in rural areas and on new streets?

I love my GPS. I got it 2 1/2 years ago and can't live without it. It is the Garmin StreetPilot 2620. I work in the whole state of NJ. It is pretty accurate except for new streets. I haven't downloaded any updates which I'm sure would help. I spent over $1000.00 back then. You can get it real cheap today.

I use my laptop with MS Streets & Trips with GPS, cost....about $160.00 and works better than anything I've ever seen, and I still have online searching with my laptop.

I used to have the Garmin Till it was stolen out of my truck, I got it back broken.

~~~ If you own a gps register it so if it stolen you call the police and the manufacturer can track it and send the police right to it , thats how I got mine back.~~
When I worked all over for the cable company I used my laptop also, it works the best I think but the Garmin was easier to carry around in your shirt pocket.
i have been researching this also. i am going to get the garmin nuvi 750. seems to be a good bang for the buck product.
Do they all require periodic updates? Are all updates fee assessed?
i was reading a message board yesterday and they were saying if you buy from hsn.com you can get i think 3 years updates with the purchase. there are deals to be had just have to search them out.
I had the 750 and loved it, up in the mountains it worked okay not great to many small roads that people live on that are not real roads just dirt. Thats when I think the laptop is better with other programs, Google Earth with sattilite views brings up my girfriends road labeled right & my Garmin just showed the dirt roads with no names for most of the small town she lives in. This is why the laptop I feel is better as a money making tool for the mechanic then the GPS. For the same price of a high end GPS you can get a great laptop and make it a better office for all your work, portfolio, addresses.
They both have great points and minuses,
Craig
Thanks to all who replied. Currently I have just been using Google maps and it works well. I just thought I'd get other opinions, good and/or bad.
currently i use google maps on my cell phone. it works ok but i want some thing that has voice commands. tomtom releases maps 4 times a year. i think garmin and magellin once or twice a year. map updates cost from 79 to 129 dollars from what i have read.
