Grady Mathews Poor Sportsman Award

Grady plays the crossword thing pretty good. When he hung in my joint in Chicago (The 4'B's Club... he speaks well of it in his book), he and I gambled on everything, including crosswords and Scrabble. He's pretty crispy with the Scrabble game too. Extremely competitive man. I think he's nuts too, and yes he is dangerous, but you gotta love him.

he has no chance to beat me playing Scrabble, for the record I'm the greatest Scrabble player ever. Bet all you like, if I cant cover it all I'll let anyone stake me for that matter, i'll only take 25% because its a lock. I have been on the lemon for the last 3200 posts.

Before you bet the farm on this... I think they are talking about the grown up version, not the Junior Edition...

That's great:D You've been hustling us for 3,200 posts. Reminds me of this guy at the pool room the other day. We played for a while and I beat him every game. He asked me "how do you know I'm not hustling you?" I told him that if he was hustling me, he deserves ALL of my money for that performance:D.

If you've got someone who wants to bet ten dimes or more, send Fatboy a PM. Otherwise forget it. He will play!

Well, I had was involved in an incident with Grady years ago (that I will not re-hash on here) and against better judgement, I chose to "air" it on here. He and I went back and forth about it on here and I took some pretty harsh remarks and things got out of hand even to the point that I almost got banned from AZ. But, at no time did I ever try and discredit Grady for the things the has done for this sport. Aside from his great commentating and tournaments, the guy put one pocket on the map. Look at how many players at all levels play one pocket today...and I credit it all to Grady and his videos and articles in the billiard magazines.. He is also an excellent instructor from what I have heard and he has as much billiard knowledge as anyone. My personal incident with Grady was unfortunate and if he happens to read this, I hope we can chalk it up to miscommunication and move forward, but no one in their right mind can say that he hasnt done anything for this sport. WOW, this thread went from Grady's accomplishments to Fatboy matching up with a newb in some high dollar scrabble action. What a wonderful world we live in here on AZ.:D

It took me a long time to chime in here. I've known Grady for 40 years now and he is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating individuals I have ever met in the pool world. Number one he is a gifted player, one of the top ten One Pocket players I've seen in my lifetime. He also played a sporty game of 9-Ball and 14.1, or whatever else you got. And he never hesitated to send it in ($$) when he liked the game.

Grady is a pool player to the core, a "lifer" if you will. He never strayed far from the poolroom, and has done just about everything you can do in the pool world, except make cues, and maybe he tried that too. His contributions to the pool firmament are well documented and I do not need to recount them here.

He is an extremely intelligent man and a great raconteur of pool stories. And Grady has a temper. Call it a short fuse or call him explosive and you aren't far off the mark. If Grady perceives that you have crossed a line with him, it is no holds barred from then on. That is, until he calms down. That's a side to Grady that none of us who know him enjoy, but that's the risk we take in befriending him and we know it. I wish he would practice better self control, but at this point in time, I think that's unrealistic to expect.

Most of the time I enjoy being around Grady and once or twice I didn't. :)

I don't care if fatboy gets on a short bus and matches up on scrabble, I'm betting against him!

What does Russ have anything to do with this?

Thanks for all of the responses, by the sound of all of the feedback it sounds like some agree and some disagree. If Grady would calm down and just do commentary for TAR, he could be a great asset to pool. But his days are over as a player. I wish Grady all the luck in the world with his health and life but please give up the gambling, you just don't have it anymore.

First off, I don't like your attitude, and could care less if that bothers you or not.

I think you're really on to something, dictating what Grady should do with his life.

As for his game, and his heart, why are you so doggone bitter?
