Grady's

Well, that may be some of the best news I have heard lately. I have family that lives within 10 minutes of the new room. I guess I know where the holidays will be spent now!

Thanks, everyone for all the positive words and the great suggestions. I am a blessed man to have so many wonderful friends and supporters.
To the couple of folks who pointed out that the U.S. Open started on the 14th, you're right and thanks. I can't find any open dates for the fall so we have decided to work on next year. Besides , I really need more lead time to do a good tournament.
Smorg asked me if I was going to gamble in the new room and the answer is, certainly, but probably not for about a year. There are just too many things to worry about and tend to and all of the money I have is earmarked for something. I will, however, welcome action, provided the players and their entourages behave themselves. I had a really hard time getting a facility at all, what with pool's reputation. So there'll be no bad langauge and I'm one of the worst offenders. If it's late at night and there are only a few hardened male gamblers then I guess they could let it out a bit. If you play in my place YOU MUST PAY OFF AND THERE'LL BE NO CHEATING.
I have nothing to say about Olathe except that I'm pretty sure that anything that Dan Tull promoted was legitimate.
Players from other countries ( there were two nice responses from one gentleman from Ireland and another from Canada), please give me a little notice and if I'm free, I'd love to get in a good practice session or two.
I think we'll be open by Sept. 1st.
http://gradymathews.com/blog/ is the link to my blog. I'm going to be doing more posting there in the near future with maybe some new road stories.

Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It is to be:
Grady's
850-C South Lake Rd.
Lexington, SC 29072
The phone number is 803-957-7665, although much of the time nobody will be answering until about mid Sept. It's on Route 6, exit 55 off I-20.
Eleven big tables and six bar boxes, Diamond Smart tables all with pro cut pockets. There's 7,400 sq. ft. and we'll be serving beer and wine.
I'm thinking about having a small event for a grand opening on Oct.13th and 14th. (The doors will be open much earlier...like as soon as there's a table on four legs.) The U.S. Open starts on the 15th but players don't have to be in Norfolk until Mon. evening and it's only a six hour drive from here in Lexington.
Frankly, I've been tired of 9 Ball for a long time and I'm kind of known for One Pocket, Banks and 14.1 anyway. So I respectfully ask this forum, do you think a Bank Pool or One Pocket event would work as an opening attraction? By the way, On Sat. nights, when there's nothing big conflicting, I run really nice handicap 9 Ball tournaments.
When I get this establishment off the ground I intend to start Senior tournaments, too.
I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Hi Grady,

Good luck with GRADY'S! It is sure to be a success with you and Randy at the helm.

I think your target audience, at least for the moment, is your local and regional players. You should have a grand opening tournament that caters to them, whatever that is, including 9 ball or even 8 ball. :)

Who knows, you might start some 8 ball leagues and that could be your bread and butter?

Nice tasting free food is lagniappe and something everyone talks about long after the grand opening tournament.

Best wishes,
JoeyA

Grady,

Congratulations on your new venture and I'm sure everyone here wishes you all the success in the world.

I think a One-Pocket event will be a great opening event for "Grady's".

All the best!

I haven't posted on here in quite awhile after getting kinda burned by another member. Long story that I don't care to talk about, nor do I wish to bring the negativity to this thread..

I figured I'd come out of retirement though to wish you the best of luck on your new pool hall. May the wind be on your face, and the sun at your back as they say. ;)

Good luck with your new room Grady. I can see you now, running out from behind the counter to take your next shot. Oh well, some things never change.

P.S. Put in a good pro shop with cues, cases, clothes, the whole works. It's a big plus in the modern day poolroom. Even sell tables (one on display is enough) and do repairs and recovering (hire out the jobs and take a cut). All this helped me in my last place.

Beer and wine is a MUST, and you've got that covered. In that much space, you can probably have some cool video games put in (on a 50-50 deal) and they can bring in some nice coin also. Something new that is just coming out, is a video Texas Hold'em game, for up to eight players. These are going to be popular.

The owner of the local pool hall I go to says the ATM machine makes more money per square foot than anything. You might want to look into it.

I hope your new place does well, Grady.

Absolutely true. Funny thing is I gave up the space when my lease ran out, but my ATM is still there. They have parties, dinners, meetings and concerts up there now. My income on the ATM remains constant.

What about an AZB night or something like that perhaps.Maybe after you have been open for a while.I have not been to or through lexington in a long while, but I'd make it there for that if work permitted.I'm sure others within a few hours would as well.

Just a thought and best of luck!

Yea I think so

A kick ass AZ tourney playing something unusual like rotation or bank pool would be fun IMHO.
even three ball or a ring game with chips

I've never been to that neck of the woods but I'd sure like to visit Grady's, play pool for about 12 hours... if there's food available. Gotta keep the brain full of nutrients :D Don't want folks leaving to get a sandwich. Feedum & keepum.

I know Grady will do well. He's a people person and a pool person.

Grady,
I could see from the Diamond Lights you had in your truck and the top of the line cue lathe you bought from me, that you are going first class all the way with your room. I am looking forward to seeing it when I can get over that way. I hope you were not too sore from all the misquito bites while we were loading up :)
