Gray Cloth at the Mosconi Cup

Pool on television is difficult to follow when you can’t distinguish which ball is which , when the ball manufacturers truly find out what colors manifest themselves best on television it will be a quatum leap for everyone. And our sport.

They had it figured out decades ago. Then somebody came along and decided to fuc' it up!

What do you think? The ball colors will show up better on TV, but will a white glare from the overhead lights hurt the eyes of the players when shooting on the light-colored cloth?

Of course, the photo by Emily Frazer, Managing Director of Matchroom Multi Sport, was to illustrate the size of the pockets, but us railbirds immediately picked up on the change of cloth color.

I like the cloth color but think the way the cushion arent flush with the pocket buckets looks like crap.

Yeah, the buckets appear to be made for wider pockets but I've seen tight pockets that had that rear corner chamfered to meet the bucket and it looks much better. The ball is safely potted by then, that last quarter inch won't change how it plays. It probably stops that corner from getting scuffed up, too, but if there's a ball return I guess it doesn't matter.

That’s pretty much what you get when you extend the rails (which I assume they did as opposed using to 3/8” facings) to get 4 inch pockets.

I seriously doubt the possibility of manufacturing a set of pocket liners custom designed for 4 inch pocket mouth openings, even for the Mosconi Cup table.

I like the cloth/ball combination. Looks more like taupe than gray to me. Would I put this on my own table? Possible.

This cloth ball combination is the best I’ve seen to distinguish the balls. Much improved from a viewing distance than the blue cloth/Aramith TV set where the 3-4-5 all look the same, and the CB-1-9 can be difficult to see.

It looks taupe to my eye as well. I'm not a fan.

I actually like the cloth color for TV. I think it shows the balls better.
The balls? Horrendous! Swapping the 4 and 5 ball should have you removed from billiards forever.

Do not like the cloth color. Remember tournament blue wasn't a color picked out of a hat. Does it bother anyone else but me that the cue ball against that gray looks funky? Also, does anyone know which SImonis cloth it is? 860 860HR, 760?

I believe it is 860.

I’m not turned off by the grey cloth, it looks decent and understated which is what cloth is supposed to do I guess (as far as visually)

I still hate the colors of the black set and will take every reasonable opportunity to say so 😎

Our last table had gray cloth, so it doesn't bother me. As mentioned, with gray chalk you will see minimal marking.

Great choice. Good on the eyes. Gray chalk does not show up too much. Play on it before you flame it. So far everyone likes it. Yes .. to each his own
Nice set up!

I don't think the balls or the cloth are that bad. I've always liked the light tan you used to see around a lot too. I do NOT like those pockets for me at all...with my current level of play that may as well be a Billiard Table ! o_O  :ROFLMAO:

The pockets are breaking tradition. What’s next … larger balls

It looks taupe to my eye as well.
Not sure if I should be ashamed or proud, but I had to look taupe up to see what color it was supposed to be.

For viewing the matches I haven't found the cloth color to be a problem. Looks ok. Will need to get a bit more used to it to know exactly where I would put it in the cloth color pecking order but it isn't too bad and is definitely on the better end out of all the colors available.

I don’t think you’ll see this color sweeping over pool rooms in the US. It just can’t match up to tournament blue.

Here is a table with the back edge chamfered to fit the pocket liner.
