Great GREAT Pool for Free - Reyes vs. Strickland

I watched these for weeks last year, trying to figure out Earl's stroke.

He does get a little unlucky the last few games. I could watch the end only once.

Mark Wilson reads him pretty well.

I don't know whose game I would want. Earl played so powerful here - unreal shotmaking so confident and fast. Efren just plays so smooth with such finesse.

If I had to choose then I guess I'd want Efren's because he is able to play all games with his style and Earl's method seems just suited for 9-ball.

This is easily one of the greatest treaures in pool that we have this available to watch.

Earl opens with a four pack on day 2 and runs out like water and Efren never wilts - he just keeps coming at every opportunity.

Mark Wilson also does EXCELLENT spot on commentary. It's really nice to have him doing it.

Honestly if you don't watch this match then you don't love pool :-)

I really hate Earl Strickland. It should be illegal to play as fast and loose as this guy! arrrgh!!!! He makes tough outs look to easy.

I really really really really HOPE that Earl can find his old form and drop all the ski gloves and ass-weights and everything but his cue and his game.

Watching this match has given me a man-crush on Earl all over again. I am reminded of how he played in the World Championships in Germany in 1990 which made him my favorite player at the time.

This had to have been a super tough beat for Earl. I wonder what their careers looked like after this match? I think Earl's started going downhill while Efren's got even better.

Terry Ardeno how about some stats?

Table

Anybody know whatever happened to the table they played on? Just wondering if that table became a collectors item or not.

Just thought I would weigh in with some support for Pat Fleming and Accu-Stats who SELL THIS VIDEO, and are being ripped off by the youtube posters. Any of the forum members in this thread who have any real sense of pride, decency, or love for the game will BUY THIS VIDEO.

It is truly the greatest pool match of all time. The standard is INCREDIBLY high for such a long match.

$200 to buy the DVD's, is in my opinion, out of line. But who am I to say? If the market supports it...

If it were more like 3x maybe 4x the price of a typical DVD, say $79.95..that would be reasonable. Heck even $99 would be ok. $200 on sale from a regular price of $250ish? That's why it's on youtube and on the torrent networks, while regular, normal priced DVD's of pool are not.

Also, there's no reason it should be 13 DVD's ...it all fits on 8 single layer 2hr DVD's perfectly.

B. O.,
You make a good point...if someone wants to steal something, its okay with many as long as it is "expensive" and "overpriced." I'm not sure I can agree (but I received my set as a gift, so no hard choices here).

P.S. - There are LOTS of regular matches on youtube; I guess $20 is too expensive for many to shell out.

I think that the video I have linked to was recorded directly from the broadcast as it contains some editing that seems like the commercials were cut out. So in that sense at least Accu-Stats is not being ripped off as it's not their edition which is being shown.

Now clearly the content owners which I would guess might be the promoter or the production company or the television station which broadcast this event might not want the video on YouTube.

I honestly don't think that the guilt trip is necessary here, I for one, did not know that Accu-Stats sold a dvd version of this match. It would have been enough to let people know that they can get the whole thing from Accustats in better quality and properly edited.

Here you go five pounds of pool - http://www.1vshop.com/Accu-Stats/store.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1037042013&PNAME=Hong+Kong+Series+(DVD)

I didn't put it on youtube and I'm not defending the act of putting it there. But as long as it's there, I encourage people to see it. If the price were lower, some youtubers might even want to buy the set after seeing how good it is. I'd like to, but $194 is a lot for better picture quality and the ability to easily reverse and fast forward, etc. I do support Accu-stats by being a monthly club member and by buying others as well, and I encourage everybody who likes pool to do the same. Accu-stats videos and their commentary are the best.

It's not a match I ever would have bought until I saw it - I'm not a big nine ball fan. But this is old school nine ball compared to today's - balls don't always drop on the break, kicking instead of jumping. Anyway, like I said before, it's the best pool I've seen.

I had heard about the match and the outcome. None-the-less it was some of the best three - four hours I have spent watching pool.

Thanks for the link. I probably would not have bought it or seen it if there wasn't a link here. I suspect the people who promoted the match and those who filmed it made a few bucks and did a lot of good for pool. Wish I could say the same for Earl. Sometimes I think he is trying to give new meaning to the term "Ugly American."

Let's be real here. No one is condoning theft. If someone tapes the matches from ESPN which AccuStats also sells and puts them on YouTube then it's ESPN's property and not AccuStats'.

ESPN may decide to leave the content up as they certainly do with a LOT of older events in all sports that can be found on YouTube.

It is certainly up to the content OWNER to police YouTube and like sites to insure that their content is not being broadcast illegally. This is the same for all intellectual property. When I owned Instroke part of my job was to constantly monitor the web for anyone infringing on my copyrighted advertising literature. I couldn't stop anyone from infringing on my designs because it's impossible to get a copyright on a design and a "design patent" is nearly useless. So all that was left is to monitor for people who stole my pictures and descriptions and stop that as best I could.

The fact is though that YouTube exists as an incredibly important archive of our history through video. I enjoy watching old commercials and documentaries, interviews etc.... I think that it's great to preserve this stuff.

As for this match being on YouTube and Google Video I think it does way way way more good than harm for it to be there. I am NOT SURE about this but I believe that AccuStats can even register themselves as a content owner and they will get a portion of any ads clicked on when the videos are shown (for content that they own). I think a lot of the big content owners are going this direction.

But from a pool standpoint having this excellent match available to all is something that stands to do a lot of good for pool as it showcases the two best players at the time and shows the promoters of the world that big money matches have merit.

And just to be perfectly clear - I admire Pat Fleming as much or more than most people. I was lucky enough to present him with a pool cue that I personally designed and engraved with his Hall of Fame bio on it in 2008 at his induction. I personally have spent around $2000 on Accustats tapes and DVDs in the past 20 years. I gave most of them away over the past several years. I grew up in pool on AccuStats matches.

JB,
My post wasn't directed specifically at any poster; you obviously didn't post the video.

You do however, mention "FREE" pool video in your title; and I just wanted to point out to forum members that the video was posted without permission of the owner (I do NOT believe that ESPN broadcasted this event, though it may have been broadcasted in Hong Kong, or in Asia somewhere. The point is moot because such broadcasts cannot be duplicated or used without the written consent of the broadcaster. Someone is suffering financial loss to some degree from the video).

In any case, I do not believe that being a good customer or giving someone a gift relieves the moral obligation. If I watched the whole thing I would feel obligated to buy it...not everyone agrees.

Well, it is free as long it's available. I guess I can understand your point but like I said YouTube and Google both have ways to have videos taken down. I am sure that if Pat cared enough then he would undertake the steps he needs to in order to get the video removed. You are probably safe in your assumption that the the video was posted without the permission from the owner of the content but we don't know that for sure. You can't always assume that the copyright holder wishes to enforce that copyright.

The way I feel about it is the same as if I go to a friends house and consume their movies. I don't feel any obligation to go buy a match just because I watched it at a friend's house. I totally agree that putting a match on YouTube is NOT the same as allowing people at your house to watch your DVDs or loaning it out. I don't really know where the line should be drawn here. YouTube leaves it up to the copyright holder to pursue their rights and makes no judgment on what is uploaded until it's challenged.

I don't really agree with you that "Someone is suffering financial loss to some degree from the video" I doubt that this video being on YouTube is hurting sales of it 16 years later. If anything it may spark some sales from people who want to own it in better quality.

It's definitely a sticky moral issue. I don't think that it's easy to frame it as a black and white issue.

Anyway, I understand where you are coming from.

JB,
You are absolutely correct, the intellectual property that is widely disseminated over the internet is a VERY sticky subject.

I just feel sorry for Pat who is having some tough times...lets hope you are right and that for every sale he loses because of this he gains two from players who just HAVE to own it after seeing it. Just a personal plea for people to support Accu-Stats; it is an incredible resource for pool players.

I do think that ALL SERIOUS PLAYERS should own this set; it is the highest standard of 9-ball ever displayed, and it would be a very poor student who couldn't learn something from almost every rack played (one of my instructors did not think my education could possibly be complete without watching it many times; so he bought it for me...how cool was that).

> I paid for this match as soon as it came out on VHS,and watched it ALL,uninterrupted the day I got it. I've watched it enough to have it pretty well memorized. This is the best 9-ball that has ever been caught on tape. Tommy D.
