I've posted of my "honorary nephew" Matt here before. Son of my buddy David, who died in an industrial accident when Matt was 5. Matt, being a good amateur pool player, was instrumental in me getting back into the game after I retired.

Matt called last night, on cloud 9. By his performance at a regional pool tournament held in Portland he'd won an entry to the US Open...entry, air fare, room at the casino, the whole ball of wax.

Oh yeah, Matt will very much be swimming in a shark tank...but he's there! His player I.D. will give him preferred seating and other bennies.

Go MATT! GO USA!

Sweet! Congrats all around... I know you are proud!

Sounds like your "honorary nephew" should have a great experience. Must have worked hard for the opportunity.

Please tell him to not let modesty limit his goals...
..step up his practise NOW till tournament time.

Chris Moneymaker won a poker qualifier and became a poker millionaire...
...a little tougher to do at 9-ball....but it could happen....
...it did at Johnson City back in the 60s.

Please post his full name so we can cheer for him

Knowing Matt, every moment not working, eating, or sleeping will be spent practicing. He works construction, but his boss is a pool fan who gives him the time off, and will even let him work off any additional funding needed. A pool player's dream boss, eh?

Damn, both my wife & I would love to be there, but age & medical issues these days translates to only short day trips for us.

Matt Horner...he can sneak up on pros if he's having a good day. Fargo high 600's..
Hell yes, it could happen...after all, he's there! Tells me he has a chance, right? Also, he bested some pretty good Northwest players to win this chance.

Hey Matt Horner, AZB is in your corner!

Congrats and GL at the US Open!:cool::thumbup:

Thanks everybody...just looked up Matt's Fargo after this latest tournament..696.
Nothing to be ashamed of, especially when one considers that he is a working stiff...has a day job in construction.

Congratulations!

A very sincere congratulations to Matt. When the time comes don't forget to start a thread and keep us updated on his results.

Surprising things happen when you go into events with the stick tuned up and your head in the right place. Of course luck of the draw helps a bit too. Nice if you can win a match or two before going up against a monster.

Looking forward to having a horse in the race!
